This section is situated in the Pahiatua No. 4 Block, at the junction of Range and Makuri–Upper Mangatiti Roads. The access is from Makuri, which is about seven miles distant by dray-road, mostly metalled. The section comprises hilly and undulating land, the soil being clayey and of fair quality, resting on papa formation. The forest is heavy, comprising rata, rimu, birch, tawa, &c., with usual undergrowth. The section is at present well watered by creeks and streams. The elevation ranges from about 800 ft. to 1,100 ft. above sea-level. “Thirds” will accrue for a period of ten years and a half.

This section is situated in the Waiwera Block, distant about twelve miles from Pahiatua via the Tutaekara and Naenae Roads. Tutaekara Railway-station is six miles distant. The section comprises hilly and broken land, with no suitable homestead-site. The soil is poor and stony on ridges, resting on rotten-rock formation. The forest is light on ridges and heavy in the gullies, comprising rimu, birch, tawa, tawhero, and stunted rata, with usual undergrowth of konini, vines, ground ferns, &c. The section is at present watered by small streams. The elevation ranges from 750 ft. to 1,000 ft. above sea-level. “Thirds” will accrue for a period of thirteen years.

This section is situated in the Waitotara Valley, on the left bank of the Waitotara River. The access is from Waitotara Township, which is about twenty-three miles distant via the Waitotara Valley and Mangawhia Roads, which have been formed for dray traffic to and past the section. These roads are frequently blocked for dray traffic by slips in the winter months. The section comprises 30 to 40 acres flat or easy ground near the road; the rest is broken and rough land, being steep spurs and ridges; there are, however, some fair faces on the section. The soil is of good quality, resting on sandstone-and-papa formation. The forest is medium heavy, comprising a few matai and rimu, hinau, puketea, tawa, rata, with birch on the ridges, and usual undergrowth. The section is watered by small streams. The elevation ranges from about 300 ft. to 1,000 ft. above sea-level. “Thirds” will accrue for a period of one year.

Second-class Land.

Weighted with £287 10s., valuation for improvements, comprising about 110 acres felled and grassed (apt to go back into fern and scrub if not properly stocked), and 90 chains of fencing.

This section is situated in the Waitotara Valley, on the left bank of the Waitotara River. The access is from Waitotara Township, which is about twenty-three miles distant via the Waitotara Valley and Mangawhia Roads, which have been formed for dray traffic to and past the section. These roads are frequently blocked for dray traffic by slips in the winter months. The section contains about 8 or 10 acres of easy ground near the road; the rest is broken and rough, being steep ridges and spurs. A great portion of the section lies well to the sun. The soil is from fair to good, resting on sandstone-and-papa formation. The forest is medium heavy, comprising a few matai, rimu, hinau, puketea, tawa, rata, and birch on ridges, with usual undergrowth. The section is watered by small streams. The elevation ranges from about 300 ft. to 1,000 ft. above sea-level. “Thirds” will accrue for a period of one year and a half.

Weighted with £21 16s., valuation for improvements, comprising 14 acres felled and grassed, 7 chains fencing, cow-shed, and dairy of sawn timber with iron roof, brick chimney.

The section is situated on the Waingawa River. The access is from Masterton, which is about eleven miles distant, of which ten miles are dray-road, mostly metalled; the remainder is bridle-track. The section comprises hilly land. There are 14 acres felled and grassed, now mostly covered with secondary growth; the remainder is dry and green bush. The soil is clayey, shallow on faces, resting on rotten-rock formation. The forest is medium light, comprising birch, rata, also a few rimu and kahikatea, &c., with the usual undergrowth of wineberry, rangiora, ferns, &c. The section is well watered. “Thirds” will accrue for a period of fifteen years.

Rural Lands in Wellington Land District open for Sale or Selection.

PLUNKET, Governor.

IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred upon me by section one hundred and thirty-six of “The Land Act, 1892,” and section two of “The Bush and Swamp Crown Lands Settlement Act, 1903,” I, William Lee, Baron Plunket, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, do hereby declare and provide as follows, that is to say:—

  1. The rural lands enumerated in the Schedules hereto are hereby set apart for disposal by way of sale or selection on and after the eighth day of March, one thousand nine hundred and five, at the respective prices specified in the said Schedules.

  2. The said lands may be purchased for cash, or be selected for occupation with right of purchase, or on lease in perpetuity: provided that in the case of lands containing or supposed to contain any metal, mineral, or valuable stone, they shall be selected on lease in perpetuity only and shall not be purchased for cash.

  3. For the purposes of “The Bush and Swamp Crown Lands Settlement Act, 1903,” the lands enumerated in the First Schedule hereto shall be deemed to be “heavy-bush land,” and the land in the Second Schedule shall be deemed to be “light-bush land.”

  4. No general rate shall be levied or collected by any local authority from the said lands for a period of four years in the case of heavy-bush land, and three years in the case of light-bush land, from the date from which in each case respectively such lands are disposed of, and no local authority shall have power to levy or collect any such rate from such lands during such period.
