  1. After the first half-year’s rent has been paid by the selector the further instalments of rent payable by him for a period of four years in the case of heavy-bush land, and three years in the case of light-bush land, shall not be demanded: provided that if at any time during the first five years of his occupancy the selector disposes of his interest in the land the rent so conceded shall be paid by him in full, and thereupon the land Board may remit such instalments of rent payable by the incoming tenant, not exceeding in the aggregate the amount of rent previously conceded to the selector, as the Board shall think fit.

This section is situated in the Waiwera Block, the access being as follows: via Pukohai and Kopikopiko Roads; from Tutaekara Railway-station, which is about eight miles and a half distant by a metalled road, with the exception of half a mile which is bridle-track; and from Hukanui Railway-station, also distant about five miles, of which about three miles are metalled, the remainder being part formed dray-road and part bridle-track (part of the latter is now overgrown). The section comprises hilly and broken land, with no suitable homestead-site. The soil is poor and stony on ridges, resting on rotten-rock formation. The forest is light on ridges and heavy in the gullies, comprising rimu, birch, tawhero, and stunted rata, with usual undergrowth of konini, vines, ground ferns, &c. The section is at present watered by small streams. The elevation ranges from 750 ft. to 1,000 ft. above sea-level. “Thirds” will accrue for a period of thirteen years.

SECOND SCHEDULE.

Second-class Light-bush Land.

The section is situated in the Dannevirke Centennial Block, on the Wai-o-waka Road. The access is from Rakaunui, which is about fifteen miles distant, six miles by dray-road, thence by bridle-track to within three miles of the section, which has a good homestead-site on the Wai-o-waka Road. The soil is of a clayey nature, resting on papa formation. The forest is light, comprising tree-manuka, black-birch, matai, rimu, tawa, totara, rewarewa, &c., with the usual undergrowth of supplejack, &c. The section is fairly well watered by small creeks in summer. The elevation ranges from about 400 ft. to 800 ft. above sea-level. “Thirds” will accrue for a period of thirteen years and a half.

Duty to be levied on Tartaraline.

PLUNKET, Governor.

WHEREAS a certain article of merchandise known as tartaraline is imported into New Zealand, which is apparently a substitute for cream of tartar, the latter being a dutiable article under “The Customs and Excise Duties Act, 1888”:

And whereas tartaraline has properties which enable it to be used for a similar purpose as cream of tartar:

Now, therefore, I, William Lee, Baron Plunket, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, in pursuance and exercise of the powers and authority conferred upon me by section seventeen of “The Customs and Excise Duties Act, 1888,” do hereby direct that on and after the date hereof there shall be levied on tartaraline a duty of one penny the pound, such duty being equal to the duty on cream of tartar.

As witness the hand of His Excellency the Governor, this fourteenth day of December, one thousand nine hundred and four.

Exempting Land from the Operation of “The State Coal-mines Act, 1901.”

PLUNKET, Governor.

PURSUANT to the provisions of section four of “The State Coal-mines Act, 1901” (hereinafter referred to as “the said Act”), and in exercise of the powers thereby conferred, I, William Lee, Baron Plunket, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, do hereby exempt from the operation of the said Act the area of land described in the Schedule hereto, being portion of the area set apart for the purposes of the said Act by Warrant issued under my hand on the thirtieth day of April, one thousand nine hundred and two, and published in the New Zealand Gazette No. 35, of the eighth day of May of the same year; and I further direct that the land so exempted from the operation of the said Act shall be disposed of under the lease-in-perpetuity provisions of “The Land Act, 1892.”

SCHEDULE.

RUNANGA TOWNSHIP (EXTENSION).

ALL that area in the Westland Land District, containing by admeasurement 110 acres 3 roods 20 perches, more or less, situated in Block III., Cobden Survey District. Bounded by a line commencing at a point on the eastern side of the Greymouth-Point Elizabeth Railway Reserve (the said point being 3929·9 links south and 120953·6 links west of Ahaura Initial Trig. Station), and proceeding thence along a line due east a distance of 3287·9 links; thence along a line due south a distance of 1030·6 links; thence along a line in a south-westerly direction bearing S. 45° W. a distance of 2089·3 links; thence along a line due west a distance of 3436·4 links to the Railway Reserve aforesaid; and thence in a northerly and north-easterly direction along the eastern side of the said Railway Reserve, a distance of 3821·8 links, to the point of commencement: as the same is delineated on the plan marked S.G. 50672, deposited in the Head Office, Department of Lands and Survey, at Wellington, in the Wellington Land District, and thereon bordered red.
