to the south-western portion of block can be had from Kai-
wi Railway-station, which is about eighteen miles distant
via Bayly’s Road, which is formed for dray traffic to within
about a mile and a half of the Puketotara Block; the rest
is not formed. The country generally is very rough and
broken, the ridges being steep and narrow, with steep and
precipitous gullies in places. The land is all forest-clad, the
timber consisting principally of tawhero, black-birch, hinau,
rata, tawa, rimu, &c., with an undergrowth of rangiora,
houhou, mahoe, supplejack, &c. The soil varies from poor
to fair, on papa-and-sandstone formation; the blocks are
generally well watered. The altitude is from about 100 ft.
to 1,700 ft. above sea-level, the ridges averaging from 1,400 ft.
to 1,500 ft, and the Ahuahu Valley about 250 ft. Along the
Ahuahu Stream there are small flats here and there which
are suitable for homestead-sites, sheep-yards, &c.

THE following special order, made by the Pelorus Road
Board, is published in accordance with the pro-
visions of “The Road Boards Act, 1882.”

SPECIAL ORDER made by the Pelorus Road Board, County
of Marlborough, making By-laws.

PELORUS ROAD BOARD.

By-laws regulating certain Wheel Traffic and imposing a
License Fee in respect of certain Heavy Traffic.

In pursuance and exercise of the powers vested in it by
“ The Road Boards Act, 1882,” “ The Counties Act, 1886,”
and “ The Public Works Act, 1894,” and the several Acts
amending the same respectively, and of every other power
enabling it, howsoever conferred, the Pelorus Road Board
doth hereby repeal the whole of By-law No. 4 of the by-
laws (hereinafter referred to as “the said by-laws”) made
by the said Board in 1901, and gazetted in the New Zealand
Gazette, No. 103, of the 5th day of December, 1901, and doth
hereby amend By-law No. 8 of the said by-laws, and in lieu
thereof and in addition thereto doth hereby make the
following by-laws with reference to or in connection with
heavy traffic upon or over the roads, bridges, ferries, and
fords under the care, control, or management of the said
Board:—

  1. A yearly license fee of £5 for each two-wheeled vehicle,
    and of £10 for each other vehicle, and for each engine and
    for each machine which shall be engaged in heavy traffic
    upon or over any road, bridge, ferry, or ford in the Pelorus
    Road District, shall be payable to the said Board.

Every yearly license fee payable under this by-law shall
be payable at the office of the said Board (in advance) before
the vehicle, engine, or machine in respect of which the same
shall become payable shall be engaged in heavy traffic; and
the payment of such license fee shall authorise the passing
over and use for the term of one year from the date of pay-
ment, by the vehicle, engine, or machine for which such fee
shall be paid, of all the roads, bridges, ferries, and fords in
the said Pelorus Road District from time to time during the
said term passable and safe for and not closed to heavy
traffic.

It is prescribed that the weight of timber carried on any
vehicle subject to these by-laws shall be ascertained by
measurements at the rate of 600 superficial feet of timber
to the ton avoirdupois. And it is further prescribed that
the manner of ascertaining the weight of the following
articles shall be by computation according to the follow-
ing scale: Wheat, 10 bags of 4 bushels to 1 ton avoir-
