No. 19
20th day of December, 1902, as appoints the several sums to be paid to the county funds for the licensing of vehicles has this day been approved by His Excellency the Governor.
C. H. MILLS,
For Colonial Secretary.
Notice to Mariners No. 15 of 1903.
POSITION OF MCKENZIE CAIRN, SOUTH OF MOERAKI LIGHTHOUSE.
Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 2nd March, 1903.
NOTICE is hereby given that a memorial cairn in the shape of a beacon has been erected on Pukelvitai Hill, about five miles S. 24° W. of Moeraki Lighthouse, and strangers navigating this part of the coast must not mistake this for Moeraki Lighthouse. Owing to the much higher altitude of the memorial cairn it is seen from seaward in the daytime at a much greater distance off than Moeraki Lighthouse, and consequently is picked up before the lighthouse is seen. The cairn can easily be recognised from the fact that it is built on a peak, and appears right on the sky-line with no background behind it, whereas the Moeraki Lighthouse is built on a low hill, and has all the higher land behind it as a background. The height of Pukelvitai Hill is 741 ft. and the cairn 58 ft., giving a total height above the sea of 799 ft. Position of cairn to correspond with the present coast charts—lat. 45° 28′ 7″ S., and long. 170° 48′ 45″ E.; or, as derived from the latest determination of Mount Cook Observatory, lat. 45° 27′ 46″ S., and long. 170° 47′ 28″ E.
