British Columbia.
CHATHAM SOUND.—A F. white lt., vis. from N. 73° W., through N. and E., to S. 22° E., but partially hidden by trees from N. 73° W. to N. 65° W., and obsc. in other directions, elev. 55 ft. above H.W., R. 13 miles, is shortly to be exh. in approx. 54° 7′ N., 130° 20¾′ W., from a square wooden tower 48 ft. high, surm. a wooden dwelling, white with red roof, est. on the wrn side, and about 1¼ cables S.-erd. from the N.W. pt. of the nrn. Lawyer Isl., Malacca Passage. Dec.
QUEEN CHARLOTTE SOUND.—A rocky patch marked by kelp, with a least depth of 5¼ fms., lies in approx. 50° 42¾′ N., 126° 49¾′ W., with the nrn. extr. of the Foster Isls. S. 30° W., 4 cables. Dec.
BROUGHTON STRAIT.—1. The rocky patch nearly midway between Cormorant and Haddington Isls. has a least depth of 2½ fms. over it, in approx. 50° 36′ N., 126° 59½′ W., with Dickenson Pt. N. 78° W., 18 cables, and the S.-ern. extr. of Haddington Isl. S. 51° W. 2. The patch in approx. 50° 36′ N., 126° 52′ W., 5 cables N. 55° W. from the N.-wrn. extr. of Pearse Isl., now shown as having 3 fms. over it, dries 4 ft. Dec.
JOHNSTONE STRAIT.—A rocky patch, carrying 6 fms., lies in approx. 50° 34¾′ N., 126° 40¾′ W., in the entr. to Parsons Bay, with Burnt Pt. S. 67° W., 13½ cables. The shoal between Sophia Isls. and Cracroft Pt., now shown as a shoal with 3 fms. over it (in approx. 50° 32¼′ N., 126° 39½′ W.), has 2 heads, about 2½ cables from the coast: the ern. head, with a depth of 1½ fms. over it, lies with the S. pt. of Sophia Isl. S. 74° E., 6¼ cables; the wrn. head has 2 fms. over it, and lies 2¾ cables S. 66° W. from the ern. head. The rk., situated in approx. 50° 30¾′ N., 126° 33½′ W., ½ cable to the srd. of the islet off Boat Harb., is awash at H.W., and not at L.W. as shown. Dec.

BARCLAY (BARKLEY) SOUND.—The following dangers exist in the sound:—a. A rk., about 25 ft. high, in approx. 48° 54′ N., 125° 30¾′ W., with Lookout Isl. summit S. 71° W., 3¼ cables, and N.E. extr. of Shelter Isls. N. 47° W. b. A rk., about 12 ft. high, with the wrn. extr. of large Double Isl. N. 11° W., 3 cables, and ern. extr. of same isl. N. 30° E. c. Heddington Reef lies about ½ mile to the erd. of its charted position; on its ern. edge are 2 heads which dry 6 and 10 ft. respectively—the 10 ft. head lies with Black Rk. S., 8 cables, and the 6 ft. head is 1½ cables N. 34° W. from it. d. A rocky patch, carrying 5 fms., in approx. 48° 51½′ N., 125° 24′ W., S.-wrd. of Storm Isl., with wrn. extr. of Combe Rk. N. 28° E., one mile, and Redonda Isl. summit N. 70° E. e. Two rks., about 6 and 7 ft. high respectively, to the S.-wrd. of Howell Isl.—the 6 ft. rk. with Redonda Isl. summit N. 63° E., 9¾ cables, and Combe Rk. N. 58° W.; the 7 ft. rk. about 3¼ cables N. 48° E. from it. A shoal appears. extends for about 2 cables to the srd. of the 6 ft. rk. f. The leading-line into Ucluelet Arm (Chan. Isl. open between the sides of the inlet N.W. by W. ¾ W.) is dangerous, and should be erased from the charts. Note.—A new edition of Admiralty charts Nos. 584, 592 will be issued. Nov.
California.
SAN FRANCISCO HARB.—Mare Isl. Strait Shoal beacon, a pile structure exh. a F. white lt., has been re-est. in 9 ft., near the old position. Nov.
PT. FERMIN.—A red whistle buoy, marked “ Pt. Fermin ” in black, is moored in about 9 fms., about ¼ mile from the shoal extending from the pt. near San Pedro Harb., with Pt. Fermin Lt.-h. in approx. 33° 41¾′ N., 118° 17½′ W., N.W. ½ mile, and Deadman Isl. breakwater lt. N. 16° E. Nov.

DREDGING OPERATIONS, PORT OF LYTTLETON.
THE Lyttelton Harbour Board direct special attention to the dredging operations now proceeding at Lyttelton, and caution all masters of steamers and sailing-vessels to pass the dredge and her moorings on the side on which a black ball is shown in the daytime, and two red lights which will be shown at night.
Attention is also directed to Harbour Regulations, No. 34:—
“34. Steamships about to pass any dredging-machine at work in any harbour, or any licensed ferry, or public work in progress, must slow their engines at such a distance before approaching any such dredge, ferry, or work as to insure their passing it at a speed not greater than dead slow.”

WHEREAS the local authorities respectively mentioned in the first column of the Schedule hereto have duly notified to me that the days upon which the shops in their respective districts shall be closed, pursuant to the provisions of “The Shops and Shop-assistants Act, 1894,” are the days set opposite their respective names in the second column of the said Schedule:
Now, therefore, in exercise of the powers in this behalf conferred upon me by the said Act, I, Richard John Seddon, Minister of Labour, do hereby appoint that the said respective days shall be the days upon which all shops within the said respective districts shall be closed.
