Pe CHILI GULF.—Howki Isl. Lt., Rev. (38° 4′ N., 120° 39′ E.) ; and Sha lu tien Isl. Lt., F. (38° 56′ N., 118° 31′ E.), are to be exh. throughout the present winter. Jan.

Pe CHILI GULF.—YUENSANG BANK.—A sounding of about 3 fms. L.W. is reported to have been obtained on the Yuen-sang bank in 38° 36′ N., 119° 5′ E. Jan.

Pe CHILI GULF.—CHINWANGTAO LT.—A temp. group.-occ. white Lt. :—Lt. 14 secs. ; ecl. 2 secs. ; Lt. 2 secs. ; ecl. 2 secs. ; elev. 87 ft. above H.W., R. 10 miles, is exh. from a white mast 38 ft. high, in 39° 55′ N., 119° 38′ E., near the S.-Wrn. extr. of the bluff at Chinwangtao. Feb.

Pe CHILI GULF.—SHANHAIKWAN LT.—A temp. F. white Lt., elev. 84 ft. above H.W., R. 10 miles, is exh. from a white mast 38 ft. high, in 39° 58′ N., 119° 48⅔′ E., on the outer bastion of the Great Wall, immediately below the Pagoda on the No. 1 fort. Feb.

The assigned position of Courbet rk. has been exam. without finding it or any indic. of it, depths of from 33 to 20 fms. being obtained near the spot. It is therefore considered that Courbet rk. is identical with Kentei rk., which is about 1⅓ cables in extent, with a least depth of 1⅓ fms., in approx. 23° 35⅓′ N., 119° 44′ E., with Keangli (Keihekisan) Pt. S. 86° W. nearly 4 miles, and Round (Yo sho) Isl. S. 25° W. Courbet rk. has been erased from the charts. A rk. named Naikimuta, with a least depth of 2 fms., lies with Round Isl. S. 9° W. 2⅔ miles, and Keangli Pt. S. 84° W. A rk. named Pakimuta, with a least depth of 7 fms., lies with Round Isl. S. 12° W. about 4⅓ miles, and Keangli Pt. S. 65° W. Feb.

CHINA.

CHIFU HARBOUR — TELEGRAPH CABLES — CAUTION.— Telegraph cables have been laid between Chifu Harbour and Taku, Port Arthur, Weihaiwei, Kiaochow, and Shanghai.

Masters of vessels are requested not to anchor to the south of a line drawn from South-east Island to Tower Point.

In the event of a vessel fouling the cables, the utmost care should be exercised to prevent damage to same.

The direction of the cables are, for the first ½ mile from the south shore of the harbour, N. 44° E. true (N.E. ¼ E. mag.). They then diverge as follows:—

Taku and Port Arthur cables S. 87° 30′ E. true (E. ½ S. S’ly mag.).

Shanghai cable S. 82° 30′ E. true (E. by S. mag.).

Weihaiwei cable S. 82° E. true (E.S.E. ⅔ E. E’ly mag.).

Kiaochow cable S. 80° E. true (E.S.E. ⅔ E. mag.).

The line taken by the shore end of the cables is marked by two triangles on poles about 40 ft. high, and painted white.

SPENCER GULF.—PORT PIRIE.

Notice is hereby given that the channel leading to Port Pirie Harbour has been further deepened, and is now not less than 150 ft. wide, with a depth of 15 ft. at low water.

The work of widening certain portions of the channel is being proceeded with, and, when finished, a new plan of the harbour and approach will be issued.

Notice to Mariners No. 20 of 1901.

THE following Notice to Mariners, received from the Portmaster, Brisbane, is published for general information.

INNER ROUTE TO TORRES STRAIT.—NEW LIGHT, SOUTH PIPON ISLAND.

REFERRING to Notice No. 12 of 1900, notice is hereby given that the light will be exhibited from the new tower on South Pipon Island on or about the 13th or 14th instant, and the Channel Rock lightship will be withdrawn. Should the weather be unfavourable the lightship will remain in her present position, exhibiting an ordinary riding light until her removal is practicable.

The tower from which the light will be exhibited is a skeleton structure 60 ft. high, and the focal plane will be 55 ft. above high water.

The light is of the 4th order dioptric, and will be visible through an arc of 160 degrees, white between bearings of N. 72° W. (through south) to N. 53° E., red between N. 53° E. and N. 76° E., and white between N. 76° E. and N. 88° E., and will be intensified over an arc of 11 degrees through the Barrow Strait. The light will be visible thirteen miles in clear weather.

IT is hereby notified for public information that the Hon. the Commissioner of Trade and Customs has decided to interpret the Customs and Excise Duties Acts in relation to the under-mentioned articles as follows:—

NOTE.—“Not otherwise enumerated” appears as n.o.e. ; “other kinds” as o.k. ; “articles and materials suited only for, and to be used solely in, the fabrication of goods in the colony” as a. & m.s. Articles marked thus * are revised decisions.

Revocation of Appointment of Bonding Warehouse.

CUSTOMS.—In exercise of the authority in me for this purpose vested, I, the Commissioner of Trade and Customs, do, by this order under my hand, revoke and annul the appointment of the under-mentioned warehouse for the reception and security of goods entered to be warehoused without payment of duty upon the first entry thereof, namely,—

Port of Wellington.

The warehouse known as

THE MADDOX MANUFACTURING BOND,

as appointed and described in Commissioner’s Order No. 576, of the 3rd day of June, 1897.
