Result of Poll for Proposed Loan, Borough of Wanganui.

THE following notice, received from the Mayor of the Borough of Wanganui, is published in accordance with the provisions of “The Municipal Corporations Act, 1900.”

To the Honourable the Colonial Secretary, Wellington.
I, ALEXANDER HATRICK, Mayor of the Borough of Wanganui, do hereby, in pursuance of the provisions of the Fifth Schedule of the above Act, give you notice that on the 11th day of March, 1901, a poll of the electors of the Borough of Wanganui was taken under the provisions of the said Act on the following proposal or resolution of the Council of the said borough: “That the Wanganui Borough Council take steps to raise by way of special loan the sum of £30,000, to be applied for and in connection with the purchase by the Council, for and on behalf of the Mayor, Councillors, and Burgesses of the Borough of Wanganui, from the Wanganui Gas Company (Limited), of all its gasworks, rights, powers, and privileges, and all of the lands, premises, works, and other property of the company, including its buildings, erections, fixed plant, movable plant, retorts, meters, coal, and other goods, effects, and products on hand; and also for and in connection with the expanding and enlarging of such gasworks: And resolved further that the Council establish a sinking fund during the currency of the loan, for or towards payment of such loan at its maturity, of an amount representing 2 per cent. of the amount for the time being of the said loan actually borrowed; and that the Council, for the purpose of providing funds for the creation of such sinking fund, do permanently appropriate out of the moneys to be received by the Council on account of such gasworks, in each year, to be paid by equal half-yearly payments on the 1st days of November and May in each such year, an amount representing 2 per cent. of the amount of the said loan then actually borrowed: And resolved further that debentures be issued for such loan in accordance with the provisions of ‘The Municipal Corporations Act, 1900,’ each to be payable on the 1st day of November, 1914.” And I further give you notice that the said proposal or resolution was on the said 11th day of March, 1901, duly carried.

I, James Purnell, of the Town of Wanganui, Town Clerk of the Borough of Wanganui, do solemnly and sincerely declare—

That I am, and was on the 11th day of March, 1901, Town Clerk of the Borough of Wanganui.

That all proceedings required by law to be taken in or towards obtaining the sanction of the electors of the Borough of Wanganui to a proposal to borrow the sum of £30,000 by way of special loan, a copy of which proposal is hereto annexed and marked “A,” have been duly taken, and that the resolution in favour of the said proposal was on the said 11th day of March, 1901, duly carried.
And I make this solemn declaration conscientiously believing the same to be true, and by virtue of the provisions of an Act of the General Assembly of New Zealand intituled “The Justices of the Peace Act, 1882.”

WM. HALL-JONES.
INTERNATIONAL CODE SIGS.—NEW EDITION TO BE USED.—With reference to the new International Code of Sigs., which was brought into use on the 1st of Jan., 1901, information is hereby given that—During the year 1901 either the new edition or the old may be used, but on and after 1st Jan., 1902, the new edition only is to be used. To prevent any misunderstanding during the year 1901 as to whether the Old or New Code is being used, when sigs. are made by the New Code the code pennant is to be doubled—that is, the fly of the pennant, as well as the tack, is to be made fast to the halyards, and hoisted below a black ball or shape. On and after 1st Jan., 1902, the code pennant will be hoisted in the ordinary way, without the black ball. Sigs. for a pilot can be made during 1901 either by the Old or New Code, but in the event of using the latter the pennant must be hoisted, as notified above. Feb.
UNITED KINGDOM OF GREAT BRITAIN AND IRELAND.

On and after 1st Jan., 1901, the following sigs. are to be made by any vessel requiring a pilot on the coasts of the United Kingdom:—In the Daytime.—1. The Pilot Jack (Union Jack with white border) to be hoisted at the fore. 2. The International Code Pilotage sig. indic. by P.T. 3. The International Code flag, S. (white with small blue square centre), with or without the Code pennant over it. 4. The dist. sig., two balls or shapes resembling balls, hoisted above a cone, pt. upwards. At Night.—1. A blue Lt. every fifteen minutes. 2. A bright white light, flashed or shown at short or frequent intervals, just above the bulwarks, for about one min. at the time. These sigs. when used or displayed together or separately shall be deemed sigs. for a pilot. Sept.

East Coast.
TUGELA RIVER ENTR.—The s.s. “General” is reported to have struck on a shoal carrying from 3 to 3½ fms. L.W., in approx. 29° 14′ S., 31° 33′ E., at the entr. to the river. Feb.
On 1st Jan., 1901, a F. white Lt., elev. 39 ft. above H.W., R. 12 miles, was to be exh. from an iron-pile structure est. in approx. 25° 53¼′ S., 32° 53¼′ E., on the Cockburn shoal, about one cable S. of the black pyra. buoy on the N. end of the Cockburn shoal as shown in Admiralty Chart No. 644 since 1898, with Gibbon pt. beacon S. 15° W. 4¾ miles, and Cape Inyack Lt.-H. S. 25° E. Feb.
POMBA (MWAMBI) BAY.— On 1st Nov., 1900, the following Lts. and buoy were to be est. in the bay: 1. On N. (Said Ali) pt., a F. white Lt., elev. 53 ft. above H.W., R. 9 miles, exh. from an iron skeleton tower, 45 ft. high, in 12° 55¾′ S., 40° 31¼′ E., 11 yds. within the pt. 2. From a pt. in the bay opposite Mpira pt. a F. white Lt., showing a red sector over the shoal extending from Mpira pt., exh. from a public office. 3. From the extr. of a stone jetty in the bay a F. red Lt. is exh. Particulars giving the exact position of the last two Lts. are not stated. 4. A cyl. buoy, black, marks the extr. of the shoal, extending about 5 cables Wrd. from Mpira (Pampeera) pt. Jan.
CHINA SEA, ETC.
KULAO RAI ISL.—A F1. white Lt. every 5 secs.: F1. 1/10 sec.; ecl. 4½ secs.; vis. from about N. 56° E., through N. and W., to S. 72° E., elev. 172 ft. above H.W., R. 20 miles, is exh. exper. from a grey pyra. Lt.-H. about 165 ft. high, in 15° 23¼′ N., 109° 6′ E., about 2 cables S. 60° W. from the N.E. pt. of the isl., entr. to Tong King Gulf. Jan.
RIVER MIN.—A rk. carrying a least depth of about 5 ft. L.W. springs lies in approx. 26° 5′ N., 119° 31′ E., Nrd. of Tintao, with Red Peak S. 66° W. 2 cables, and Kaulin Head S. 56° E. There is another rock between the above and the Wrn. bank of the river. Feb.
