MOA ROAD BOARD.

At a special meeting of the Board, held the 20th day of December, 1899, the following special order was made:—

“That, for the purpose of readjustment of the now-existing loans obtained under the provisions of the Government Loans to Local Bodies Acts, and specified in the Schedule hereto, the Moa Road Board do hereby order and authorise the said now-existing loans, and the inscribed debt in respect of such loans, to be readjusted under the provisions of subsection (1) of section 2 of ‘The Government Loans to Local Bodies Act Amendment, Act, 1899,’ for the unexpired period of twenty-six years, such readjustment to take effect on the 1st day of February next. The payments to be made by the Moa Road Board on such loans and inscribed debt to be at the rate of 4½ per cent. per annum, payable half-yearly, during the unexpired period of twenty-six years, as from the 1st day of February aforesaid.”

Such special order will be confirmed at a special meeting of the Board to be held at the office of the Board on Saturday, the 20th January, 1900, at 11 a.m.

STRATFORD COUNTY COUNCIL.

RESULT of a poll taken on the 20th day of January, 1900, upon the proposal to borrow £250 under “The Government Loans to Local Bodies Act, 1886,” and the amendments thereof, for forming and grading part of the North Douglas Road:—

Number of ratepayers on special roll, 2; number of votes exercisable, 3: Number of ratepayers voting in favour of the proposal, 2; number of votes recorded in favour of the proposal, 3; number of ratepayers voting against the proposal, nil.

The required majority having been obtained, I hereby declare the above proposal to be carried.

STRATFORD COUNTY COUNCIL.

RESULT of a poll taken on the 20th day of January, 1900, upon the proposal to borrow £1,500 under “The Government Loans to Local Bodies Act, 1886,” and its amendments, (a) for forming, grading, and culverting the North Douglas Road, from the northern boundary of the Huiroa Township to the Tunupo Road; (b) for bridging the Waitara River; (c) for forming, grading, and culverting the Tunupo Road from the Douglas Road so far as the remainder of the loan-money will allow:—

Number of ratepayers on special roll, 13; number of votes exercisable, 15: Number of ratepayers voting in favour of the proposal, 8; number of votes recorded in favour of the proposal, 10; number of ratepayers voting against the proposal, 2; number of votes recorded against the proposal, 2.

The required majority having been obtained, I hereby declare the above proposal to be carried.

SPECIAL NOTICE TO OWNERS AND MASTERS OF SHIPS.

Warning Signals.—Morse Code Signals.

THE following urgent and important signals may be made at night or in thick weather, either by long and short flashes of light or by long and short sounds on a steam-whistle, siren, foghorn, &c.:—

For example, the first signal below, which in the Morse alphabet represents the letter U, is made by two short and one long flashes or blasts, i.e., · · —, and means “You are standing into danger.”

Instructions for the Use of Flashing or Sound Signals.

  1. With flashing signals the lamp must always be turned towards the person addressed.
  2. To attract attention a series of rapid short flashes or sounds should be made, and continued until the person addressed gives the sign of attention by doing the same.
    If, however, it is supposed that the person addressed cannot reply, the signal may be made after a moderate pause, or, under certain circumstances, the communication may be made without preparatory signs.
  3. After making a few rapid short flashes or sounds as an acknowledgment, the receiver must watch or listen attentively until the communication is completed, when he must make the sign indicated below, showing that the message is understood.
  4. If the receiver does not understand the message, he must wait until the signal is repeated.
  5. Duration of short flashes or sounds — .. 1 second.
    Duration of long flashes or sounds — .. 3 seconds.
    Interval between each flash or sound .. 1 second.
    Answer, or “I understand” .. .. .. .. &c.
