HAWERA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Hawera, 4th November, 1898.

Sir,—I, Charles Edwin Major, Mayor of the Borough of Hawera, in the Colony of New Zealand, do hereby, pursuant to section 184 of “The Municipal Corporations Act, 1886,” give you notice that, on the 2nd day of November, 1898, a poll of the burgesses of the said Borough of Hawera was taken, under the provisions of the said Act, on a proposal of the Council of the said borough to borrow the sum of £36,500 by way of special loan under the provisions of the said Act, a copy of which proposal is next hereinafter set out.

“Hawera Borough Council.
“Special Loan for Water-supply and Drainage System, General Improvements, and Repayments of Borough Loan and Office Building Loan.
“1. The particular works proposed to be undertaken: 1, water-supply, £22,166; 2, drainage system, £7,170; 3, general, street, and improvements, £3,264; 4, repayment of existing loans, £3,900.
“2. The sum proposed to be borrowed for such purposes: £36,500, as set forth above.
“3. The security for such loan proposed to be pledged is a special rate of 2s. 6d. in the pound on all the rateable property within the borough; the rents accruing from Suballotments 1 to 8 of Allotment 7 of Section 19 in the Borough of Hawera; and a water-rate to be levied under section 325 of ‘The Municipal Corporations Act, 1886.’
“Dated this 20th day of September, 1898.

And I also give you notice that the number of votes recorded upon the taking of the said poll for and against the said proposal was as follows: Number of voters on roll, 381; number of votes exercisable, 504: Number of voters for proposal, 281; number of votes for proposal, 394; number of voters against proposal, 8; number of votes against proposal, 11; number of voters not voting, 89; number of votes not exercised, 96; number of informal votes, 3.

Declaration.

In the matter of a loan for water-supply, drainage system, general, street, and improvements, and repayment of existing loans, and a proposal by the Hawera Borough Council to borrow the sum of £36,500 for such purposes under Part IX. of “The Municipal Corporations Act, 1886,” I, Charles Edwin Major, of High Street, in the Borough of Hawera, in the Colony of New Zealand, Mayor of the said borough, do solemnly and sincerely declare as follows:—

  1. That all proceedings, as required by the above-named Act, to be taken towards obtaining the sanction of the burgesses of the said Borough of Hawera to a proposal of the Council of the said borough to raise the sum of £36,500, by way of special loan under the provisions of the said Act, have been duly taken.
  2. That, upon a poll of the said burgesses taken on the said proposal on the 2nd day of November, 1898, the said proposal was duly carried within the meaning of the above-named Act.
    And I make this solemn declaration conscientiously believing the same to be true, and by virtue of the provisions of an Act of the General Assembly of New Zealand intituled “The Justices of the Peace Act, 1882.”

Result of Poll as to bringing Part V., “Wellington City Empowering Act, 1897,” into force.

THE following notice, received from the Mayor of the City of Wellington, is published in accordance with the provisions of “The Municipal Corporations Act, 1886,” and “The Wellington City Empowering Act, 1897.”

In the matter of “The Wellington City Empowering Act, 1897,” and of Part IX. of “The Municipal Corporations Act, 1886.”

To the Hon. the Colonial Secretary, Wellington.

I, John Rutherford Blair, Mayor of the City of Wellington, in the Colony of New Zealand, do hereby, pursuant to the provisions of “The Wellington City Empowering Act, 1897,” and section 184 of “The Municipal Corporations Act, 1886,” give you notice that, on the 26th day of October, 1898, a poll was taken under the provisions of the said Acts, on a proposal of the Council of the said city to adopt Part V. of “The Wellington City Empowering Act, 1897.” The following is a copy of the proposal.

WELLINGTON CITY COUNCIL.
Proposal to adopt Part V. of “The Wellington City Empowering Act, 1897.”

Whereas by section 9 of the above Act it is provided that Part V. of that Act shall come into force if and when a proposal to bring the same into force shall be carried at a poll of the citizens:
And whereas the said Part V. gives powers to the Council to take, or purchase, or otherwise acquire lands for widening, diverting, altering the course of, and extending streets, private streets, and rights-of-way in the city, together with land to any depth on either or both sides of any such widened, altered, or diverted street, private street, or right-of-way, or of any such extension of street, private street, or right-of-way, and power to extend streets, private streets, and rights-of-way, and to borrow moneys by special loan, and sell or lease surplus lands, and to take over private streets and rights-of-way, and provides as to the application of rents and sale-moneys, and that the total amount of special rates levied in connection with any such loans shall not at any time exceed 2½d. in the pound, and makes provision as to other matters:
Now notice is hereby given that the Council of the City of Wellington proposes that Part V. of “The Wellington City Empowering Act, 1897,” shall come into force.
Dated this 17th day of September, 1898.

And I also give you notice that the numbers of votes recorded, upon the taking of the said poll, for and against the said proposal were as follows: For the proposal, 207 votes; against the proposal, 37 votes; majority for the proposal, 170 votes. And, it being provided by the first above-mentioned Act that the said proposal was to be deemed carried if a majority of three-fifths of the votes given on the taking of the said poll should be in favour of the said proposal, I hereby further give you notice that the said proposal of the Council of the City of Wellington was duly carried upon the taking of the said poll.

In the matter of “The Wellington City Empowering Act, 1897,” and of Part IX. of “The Municipal Corporations Act, 1886.”

I, John Rutherford Blair, of Wellington Terrace, in the City of Wellington, in the Colony of New Zealand, Mayor of the said city, do solemnly and sincerely declare as follows:—

  1. That all the proceedings which by the joint operation of the above-named Acts were required to be taken in or towards obtaining the sanction of the citizens of the said City of Wellington to a proposal of the Council of the said city to adopt Part V. of “The Wellington City Empowering Act, 1897,” which proposal is set out in the voting-paper hereunto annexed and marked with the letter A, have been duly taken.
  2. That, upon a poll of the said citizens taken on the said proposal on the 26th day of October, 1898, the said proposal was duly carried within the meaning of the above-named Acts (read together).
    And I make this solemn declaration conscientiously believing the same to be true, and by virtue of the provisions of an Act of the General Assembly of New Zealand intituled “The Justices of the Peace Act, 1882.”
