hillocky. The soil is of good quality, 4 in. to 8 in. in depth, resting on papa-and-sandstone formation. The forest is of medium density and size throughout, comprising matai, rimu, maire, miro, kahikatea, rata, &c., with a medium undergrowth of maku, mahoe, houhou, koromiko, rangiora, &c. The section is well watered by permanent streams. The elevation ranges from about 1,700 ft. to 1,950 ft. above sea-level.
Section 2, Block II., Maungakaretu District, is situated on the Owhakura Road. The present access is from Main Road three miles east of Karioi, which is about ten miles distant, via a pack-track which leads over this section. Future access will be via Turakina Road. The section comprises, generally speaking, hillocky and gently undulating forest country, with small flats scattered throughout; there is about 8 acres of open grass land in the southern portion of section. The soil is similar to that on Section 1, Block II. The forest is medium, light on hillocks and heavy in gullies, comprising rimu, matai, kowhai, miro, tarata, &c., with a medium undergrowth of maku, mahoe, kotukutuku, rangiora, koromiko, &c. The section is well watered by permanent streams. The elevation ranges from about 1,680 ft. to 2,118 ft. above sea-level.
Section 4, Block II., Maungakaretu District, is situated on the Turakina Valley Road. The present and future access same as for Section 2, Block II. The section comprises about half of heavy pine flat, the remainder being gently rising land. The soil is similar to that on Sections 1 and 2. The forest is heavy on flats and medium on sidelings, comprising kahikatea, matai, miro, rimu, maire, &c., with a medium undergrowth of rangiora, maku, mahoe, &c. The section is well watered. The elevation ranges from about 1,650 ft. to 1,850 ft. above sea-level.
Section 5, Block II., Maungakaretu District, is situated on the Owhakura Road. The present access is same as for Sections 2 and 4. Future access will probably be via Turakina and Owhakura Roads. The section comprises undulating bush country, with the exception of about 40 acres of an old Native clearing on the west central portion of the section. The soil is similar to that on Sections 1 and 2. The forest is fairly heavy throughout, comprising rimu, matai, maire, kahikatea, miro, &c., with a medium undergrowth of maku, mahoe, kowhai, kotukutuku, &c. The section is fairly well watered by small streams. The elevation ranges from about 1,650 ft. to 1,900 ft. above sea-level.
Section 12, Block II., Maungakaretu District, is situated on the Turakina Road. The present access is from Main Road, three miles east of Karioi, which is about eleven miles distant, via pack-tracks and uncleared surveyed road. Future access will be via Turakina Road. The section comprises at the back portion flat-topped spurs, falling towards Turakina River, ending in gentle slopes along the road-frontage. The soil is same as preceding sections. The forest is medium throughout, comprising rimu, kahikatea, maire, miro, &c., with a medium undergrowth of maku, mahoe, kotukutuku, matipo, koromiko, &c. The section is well watered by small streams, and has frontage to Turakina River. The elevation ranges from about 1,600 ft. to 1,900 ft. above sea-level.
Section 1, Block VI., Maungakaretu District, is situated on the Turakina Road. The present access is from Main Road, three miles east of Karioi, which is about twelve miles distant, via pack-track and uncleared surveyed road. The future access will be via Turakina Road. The section comprises at the back portion undulating land, which falls towards the Turakina River, forming gentle slopes and flats along the road-frontage. The section is well watered by permanent streams. The elevation ranges from about 1,550 ft. to 1,900 ft. above sea-level.

Rural Lands in the Wellington Land District open for Sale or Selection.
District Lands and Survey Office, Wellington, 13th August, 1898.
THE under-mentioned Crown lands will be opened for sale or selection, in terms of section 136 of “The Land Act, 1892,” either for cash, for occupation with right of purchase, or for lease in perpetuity, at the option of the selector, on and after Wednesday, the 7th December, 1898.
If more than one application be received for the same section on the same day, then the order of selection shall be decided by ballot on the following day, at 11 a.m.

Section 44, Block III., Makuri, is situated at the junction of the Totara Road and the Rabbit-fence Reserve. The access is from Kumeroa, Hawke’s Bay, which is about seven miles distant, the last mile and a half being road which is surveyed only; it is also distant about three miles and a half from Makairo Post-office, by one mile and a half of formed road and two miles of road which is surveyed only. The land is undulating and the soil good, resting on papa formation; the forest is of a mixed character, comprising chiefly tawa, rimu, &c., with the usual undergrowth. The section is watered by a spring.
Section 42, Block III., Makuri, is situated on the Totara Road, and has access from Makairo, where there is a post-office, the distance being about two miles and a half, by one mile and a half of formed road and one mile of road which is surveyed only. The land is undulating, and has a good soil resting on papa formation; it is all cleared of bush, and is watered by a small stream. The section is weighted with £13 10s. for improvements, comprising 6 acres in grass.
