Section 7, Block IV., Ngamatea District, is situated on the Owhakura Road. The present access is from Main Road near Karioi, which is about ten miles distant via pack-tracks and surveyed road-lines. The section comprises easily sloping land along the frontage, flat-topped spurs in the centre, and somewhat broken to the south and east. The soil is the same as Sections 5 and 6. The forest is similar to that on Section 6. The section is well watered by permanent streams. The elevation ranges from about 1,700 ft. to 2,000 ft. above sea-level.
Section 1, Block VIII., Ngamatea District, is situated on the Wangaehu Road. The present access is same as to Section 7, Block IV. A dray-road is formed up the Wangaehu River for twenty miles above Mangamahu, and about another eight miles will reach this section, most of which is only a surveyed road. The section comprises, generally speaking, undulating land in the centre, with small flats on the eastern and western side, except along the bank of the Wangaehu River, which is rough and broken for a distance of about 15 chains inland. The soil varies from poor to good, 4 in. to 8 in. in depth, resting on papa-and-sandstone formation. The forest is chiefly heavy on the flats and medium on the hills, comprising rimu, matai, miro, maire, kahikatea, &c., with patches of tawhai and tawhero along the Wangaehu River, with a medium undergrowth of maku, rangiora, matipo, &c. The section is well watered by permanent streams. The elevation ranges from about 1,500 ft. to 1,950 ft. above sea-level.
Section 2, Block VIII., Ngamatea District, is situated on the Wangaehu Road. The present access is the same as to Section 1. The section comprises, generally speaking, about 20 acres of flat land along Maketu Creek, and about 3 or 4 acres of an old Native clearing named Pou. The south-western portion is broken, the remainder is gently sloping land. The soil is similar to that on Section 1. The forest is chiefly heavy on flats and light on the broken part, comprising rimu, maire, miro, matai, kahikatea, and birch along banks of the Wangaehu River, with a medium undergrowth of maku, kotukutuku, rangiora, matipo, &c. The section is well watered by a permanent stream; the elevation ranges from about 1,300 ft. to 1,750 ft. above sea-level.
Section 4, Block VIII., Ngamatea District, is situated on the Wangaehu Road. The present access is from the Main Road near Karioi, which is about eleven miles distant via pack-tracks and surveyed road. From Mangamahu a dray-road is constructed for twenty miles up the Wangaehu River; about five miles further will tap this section, part of which is surveyed road. The section comprises, generally speaking, hilly forest land; about 20 acres of it are flat and easily sloping at the north central portion, with spurs falling towards the stream, precipitous along Wangaehu River. The soil is similar to that on Sections 1 and 2. The forest is fairly heavy on the flats and light on spurs, comprising matai, rimu, miro, tawa, maire, kahikatea, &c., with a medium undergrowth of maku, rangiora, matipo, tarata, &c. The section is poorly watered by small streams. The elevation ranges from about 1,250 ft. to 1,800 ft. above sea-level.
Section 5, Block VIII., Ngamatea District, is situated on the Wangaehu Road. The present access is the same as that for Section 4. The section comprises, generally speaking, hilly forest land; at the north central portion the country is hillocky, with easily sloping land; the remainder is spurs falling towards the Pongarara Stream. The soil is of fair quality throughout, 4 in. to 8 in. in depth, resting on papa-and-sandstone formation. The forest is fairly heavy, comprising rimu, miro, maire, rata, kahikatea, &c., with a medium undergrowth of maku, tarata, mahoe, rangiora, kotukutuku, &c. The section is well watered by a permanent stream. The elevation ranges from about 1,250 ft. to 1,800 ft. above sea-level.
Section 1, Block I., Maungakaretu, is situated on the Owhakura Road. The present access is from the Main Road near Karioi, which is about seven miles distant, via pack-track, and surveyed road. The section comprises, generally speaking, hilly forest country; the south-eastern portion is easily sloping and flat land, the remainder is broken by spurs; on the tops of the main water-parting there are small flats. The soil is fair to good, 4 in. to 8 in. in depth, resting on papa-and-sandstone formation. The forest is fairly heavy throughout, comprising rata, rimu, matai, maire, kahikatea, &c., with a medium undergrowth of maku, mahoe, rangiora, kotukutuku, &c. The section is well watered by permanent streams. The elevation ranges from about 1,730 ft. to 2,400 ft. above sea-level.
Section 2, Block I., Maungakaretu District, is situated on the Owhakura Road. The present access is the same as that to Section 1. The section comprises hillocky and undulating country, with small flats scattered throughout. The soil is of good quality, 4 in. to 8 in. in depth, resting on papa-and-sandstone formation. The forest is similar to that on Section 1. The section is well watered by permanent streams. The elevation ranges from about 1,650 ft. to 1,900 ft. above sea-level.
Section 3, Block I., Maungakaretu District, is situated on the Owhakura Road. The soil is of good quality, and similar to that on Sections 2 and 3. The forest is fairly heavy on the easy slopes and lighter on the sidelings, and of same character as on preceding sections. The section is well watered by a permanent stream. The elevation ranges from about 1,700 ft. to 1,950 ft. above sea-level.
Section 5, Block I., Maungakaretu District, is situated on the Owhakura Road. The forest is medium in density and size, comprising rata, rimu, maire, matai, miro, kahikatea, &c., with a medium undergrowth of maku, mahoe, kotukutuku, matipo, &c. The section is well watered by permanent streams. The elevation ranges from about 1,600 ft. to 2,200 ft. above sea-level.
Section 6, Block I., Maungakaretu District: Situation and access is the same as in Section 5. The section comprises, generally speaking, hilly forest country, with a fair amount of easily sloping land. The soil is of good quality, 4 in. to 8 in. in depth, resting on papa-and-sandstone formation. The forest is same as described for Section 5. The section is well watered by permanent stream. The elevation ranges from about 1,600 ft. to 2,150 ft. above sea-level.
Section 9, Block I., Maungakaretu District, is situated at the junction of Koukoupo Road and Owhakura Road. The present access is from Main Road near Karioi, which is about eight miles distant, via pack-track and uncleared surveyed road; also can be approached from Hale’s Track, via formed pack-track and surveyed road. The section comprises easily sloping land and small flats along the road-frontage, with hillocky land towards the south-western portion. The soil is of good quality, 4 in. to 8 in. in depth, resting on papa-and-sandstone formation. The forest is fairly heavy throughout, comprising rimu, matai, kahikatea, maire, miro, &c., with a medium undergrowth of maku, mahoe, kotukutuku, &c. The section is well watered by a permanent stream. The elevation ranges from about 1,550 ft. to 1,900 ft. above sea-level.
Section 1, Block V., Maungakaretu District, is situated on the Koukoupo Road. The present access is from Karioi on Main Road, which is about ten miles distant, by pack-track and uncleared surveyed road-lines. It can also be approached via formed pack-track from Hale’s Track, and uncleared surveyed road up Koukoupo Creek. The section comprises, generally speaking, hilly forest land; along the Koukoupo Road there are small flats and easily sloping land; the western portion of section is broken by spurs. The soil is fair to good, 4 in. to 8 in. in depth, resting on papa-and-sandstone formation. The forest is heavy on the flats and lighter on the ridges, comprising rimu, matai, maire, kahikatea, miro, &c., with a medium undergrowth of maku, mahoe, kotukutuku, tarata, houhere, &c. The section is well watered by permanent streams. The elevation ranges from about 1,400 ft. to 1,900 ft. above sea-level.
Section 2, Block V., Maungakaretu District: The situation and access same as for Section 1, Block V. The section comprises, generally speaking, hilly forest country, with the exception of about 10 acres of open flax land at the south-western corner; also small flats and gently sloping land occasionally. The soil is of good quality, 4 in. to 8 in. in depth, resting on papa-and-sandstone formation. The forest is medium to light on the hills and heavy on the creeks, comprising rimu, matai, maire, white manuka, kowhai, &c., with a medium undergrowth of rangiora, koromiko, mahoe, maku, &c. The section is well watered by permanent streams. The elevation ranges from about 1,350 ft. to 1,800 ft. above sea-level.
