Notice to Local Authorities under “The Government Loans to Local Bodies Act, 1886.”

The Treasury,
Wellington, 12th April, 1898.

PURSUANT to section 16 of “The Government Loans to Local Bodies Act, 1886,” the Colonial Treasurer hereby gives notice that on Wednesday, the 1st June, 1898, he will be prepared to consider applications from local authorities for loans under the Act.

Applications should be addressed to the Colonial Treasurer, and must be posted so as to arrive at the Treasury on or before the 31st May, 1898.

TARATAHI-CARTERTON ROAD BOARD.—RESULT OF POLL FOR LOAN.

I HEREBY give public notice that the poll for No. 8 Subdivision of the Taratahi-Carterton Road District, taken on the 3rd day of May, 1898, on the proposal to raise a loan of £700 under the provisions of “The Local Bodies’ Loans Act, 1886,” and “The Government Loans to Local Bodies Act, 1886,” and their respective amendments, for the purpose of constructing a bridge across the Taueru River, resulted as follows:—

Total number of voters on the roll, 80; total number of votes exercisable by them, 163: Number of voters who voted for the proposal, 43; number of votes recorded for the proposal, 91; number of voters who voted against the proposal, 1; number of votes recorded against the proposal, 4.

I accordingly declare the above-mentioned proposal duly carried.

Dated at Carterton, this 6th day of May, 1898.

By-laws regulating Traffic on the Taumarunui–Ohakune Road, Stratford–Ongarue Road, Te Kuiti–Awakino Road, Alexandra–Kawhia Road, Kawhia–Aotea Road.

IN pursuance and in exercise of the powers conferred by section 130 of “The Public Works Act, 1894,” and section 2, subsection (1), (a), of “The Public Works and Government Railways Acts Amendment Act, 1895,” I, John McKenzie, Minister of Lands, do, in respect of the Government road from Taumarunui to Ohakune (from Poro-o-tarao Tunnel to Taumarunui), the Government road from Stratford to Ongarue (from Te Kawakawa to Mangaroa), the Government road from Te Kuiti to Awakino (from Mokau Heads to Mahoenui), the Government road from Alexandra to Kawhia (from the Waipa Bridge, at Whatiwhatihoe, to Powewe, at Kawhia), and the Government road from Kawhia to Aotea (from Powewe, at Kawhia, to Matahahaea, at the boundary of the Kawhia and Raglan Counties)—as the said roads are delineated upon the plan marked S.G. 36750, deposited in the Head Office of the Department of Lands and Survey, at Wellington, in the Wellington Land District, and therein coloured red—hereby classify the vehicles mentioned below, and do hereby make the following by-laws in respect of the same, that is to say:—

OR BUGGY AND COACH TRAFFIC, CARRYING PERSONS OR PASSENGERS ONLY.

If the Carrying-capacity of the Buggy do not exceed the under-mentioned Number of Persons, exclusive of the Driver— Then the Minimum Width of Tire of any such Buggy shall be If the Carrying-capacity of the Coach do not exceed the under-mentioned Number of Persons, exclusive of the Driver— Then the Minimum Width of Tire of any such Coach shall be

The “carrying-capacity” of each such vehicle as aforesaid is to be ascertained by allowing to each passenger, when seated, 1 ft. 4 in. superficial (measured lengthways) and the full width of the seating-accommodation actually and usually provided in or on such vehicle.

The foregoing by-law does not apply to buggies and coaches carrying goods and passengers, or goods other than passengers’ luggage; and buggies and coaches not included herein are subject to By-law No. 3 hereunder.

  1. The haulage or transportation on the said roads of any engine or machine coming under the definition of “heavy traffic” within the meaning of clause (a) of subsection (1) of section 130 of “The Public Works Act, 1894,” during the months of May, June, July, August, and September in any year, shall cease.

  2. The width of tires of all vehicles, other than as classified above, upon the said roads, whether plying for hire or not, shall bear the following proportion to the number of animals employed to draw the same, that is to say,—

  1. If any person shall commit a breach of any of the foregoing by-laws, he shall be liable, upon conviction for such breach, to a penalty of £5: Provided that the Court before which proceedings may be taken in respect of such breach may, if it think fit, impose such lower penalty as it may think adequate to the particular case.

Certificate and Declaration of Execution of Criminal.

THE following certificate and declaration are published in conformity with the provisions of “The Criminals Executions Act, 1883.”

I, PATRICK JOSEPH O’CARROLL, the Medical Officer in attendance at the execution of Enoka at the prison of New Plymouth, do hereby certify and declare that I have this day witnessed the execution of the said Enoka at the said prison, and I do further certify and declare that the said Enoka was, in pursuance of the sentence of the Supreme Court, hanged by the neck until his body was dead.

Given under my hand, this second day of May, in the year one thousand eight hundred and ninety-eight, at the prison of New Plymouth.

DECLARATION.

We do hereby testify and declare that we have this day been present when the extreme penalty of the law was carried into execution on the body of Enoka, convicted at the Criminal Sessions of the Supreme Court held at New Plymouth on the twenty-third day of March last, and sentenced
