Rural Lands in the Nelson Land District open for Sale or Selection.
RANFURLY, Governor.
IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred upon me by the one hundred and thirty-sixth section of “The Land Act, 1892,” I, Uchter John Mark, Earl of Ranfurly, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, having received the report of the Surveyor-General in this behalf, as in the said section is provided, do hereby declare that the rural lands described in the Schedule hereto shall be open for sale or selection on and after the ninth day of March, one thousand eight hundred and ninety-eight; and also that the lands mentioned in the said Schedule may, at the option of the applicant, be purchased for cash, or be selected for occupation with right of purchase or on lease in perpetuity, or, in respect of any lands containing or supposed to contain any metal, mineral, or valuable stone, be selected on lease in perpetuity only; and I do hereby also fix the prices at which the said lands shall be sold, occupied, or leased, as mentioned in the said Schedule hereto, and do declare that the said lands shall be sold, occupied, or leased under and subject to the provisions of “The Land Act, 1892.”

The country consists of low hills, with the exception of about 300 acres of flax and raupo swamp; about half of the remaining area is covered with bush, chiefly birch, with a few rimu, and the rest comprises patches of manuka and tauhinau scrub and open grass land: the whole land, excepting the swamp, being suitable for grazing purposes.
The block can be reached by two routes from Collingwood—the southern end by the Pakawau-West Wanganui Track, distance about fourteen miles; the northern end by a proposed road from the coast, at Puponga, distance about seventeen miles.

THE following special order, made by the Kowai Road Board, is published in accordance with the provisions of “The Road Boards Act, 1882.”

KOWAI ROAD BOARD.—SPECIAL ORDER.
THAT the Board do now make a special order—that is to say, that the Kowai Road Board, having received a requisition signed by over two-thirds of the ratepayers in respect of property situated within that portion of the Kowai Road District hereinafter described, and representing considerably over one-half of the rateable value of the rateable property therein—that the Board levy a special rate on all the rateable property within the aforesaid portion of the Kowai Road District, such special rate to be applied in defraying the cost of protective works done and to be done on the north bank of the River Ashley, between the railway-bridge and the Lower Ashley traffic-bridge, by the planting of willows or otherwise; and by special order in conformity therewith hereby notify that, in accordance with sections 120 and 121 of “The Road Boards Act, 1882,” “The Rating Act, 1894,” and amendments thereto, the Board will proceed, at its next meeting, to be held on Monday, the 15th November, 1897, to pass a resolution to levy a special rate of ½d. in the pound on the rateable values of all the rateable property in the aforesaid portion of the district for the period ending 6th October, 1898.
The portion of the said Kowai Road District referred to in the petition is bounded as follows: On the south by the north bank of the River Ashley; on the west by the Christchurch to Culverden railway-line (some 5 chains); on the north-west and north by the Ashley and Sefton Road to the Main North Road; on the east by the Main North Road to Saltwater Creek Bridge; and on the south-east by a line drawn from the Saltwater Creek Bridge to the north bank of the River Ashley at the point where the said river flows into the sea.
