The Wairarapa North County Council has a claim of £7 14s. for rates due on Section 18, Block VI., Puketoi, which is now being offered in two lots—viz., Sections 18 and 18A, Block VI., Puketoi.

Section 1, Block II., Mangahao, is situated on the Range Road North, in the Palmerston North Forest Reserve Block, and comprises rather rough and broken country, with sufficient flat for a building-site. It is well watered by constantly-running streams. The soil is fair, on a papa-and-sandstone formation; covered with forest of a mixed character, consisting of rimu, tawa, rata, &c., with birch on the ridges, and an undergrowth of the usual description. The section is distant about thirteen miles from Palmerston North, eight miles being a formed dray-road, four and a half miles a bridle-track, and half a mile a rough pack-track.

Section 11, Block IX., Hautapu, is situated on the Mangaweka–Te Kapua Road, in the Awarua Block, and comprises broken land, with enough flat for a building-site, &c. It is well watered by the Makohine Stream, and other constantly-running streams. The soil is good, on a papa formation, and is covered with forest of a mixed character, containing rimu, matai, tawa, rata, &c., with the usual undergrowth. The section is distant about five miles from Mangaweka, four miles of which is a formed bridle-track.

Section 10, Block XII., Hautapu, is situated on the Kawhatau Valley Road, in the Marton No. 1 Block, and comprises rough land with large landslips in places, and about 2 acres of flat land between the road and the River Kawhatau. It is well watered. The soil is fair, on a papa formation, and is covered with heavy scrub, with a few rimu, kahikatea, &c. The section is about eight miles from Mangaweka, by a formed road almost to the section.

Section 4, Block XIII., Hautapu, is situated on the Peka Road, in the Rangitikei Valley, and comprises undulating land with about 30 acres or more of flat. It is well watered. The soil is good, on a papa formation, and is covered with forest of a mixed character, containing rimu, matai, rata, tawa, &c., with the usual undergrowth. The section is distant about five miles from Ohingaiti, by a formed bridle-track.

Section 27, Block VIII., Tiriraukawa, is situated in the Awarua Block, and has access to “Murray’s Track.” It comprises broken land, which is well watered. The soil is good, on a papa formation, covered with forest of a mixed character, containing rimu, matai, tawa, rata, &c., with the usual undergrowth. The section is distant about nineteen miles from Hunterville by a formed dray-road.

Section 34, Block VII., Umutoi, is situated on the Umutoi Road, in the Pohangina Block, and comprises hilly and undulating land with about 25 acres of flat. It is well watered by constantly-running streams. The soil is fair, on a papa formation, covered with forest of a mixed character, containing rimu, miro, rata, &c., with birch on the ridges, and the usual undergrowth. The section is distant about ten miles from Apiti Township, six miles of the distance being a formed dray-road partly metalled, three miles a bridle-track, and one mile a surveyed road.

Section 21, Block VIII., Mount Cerberus, is situated on the Makuri–Pongaroa Road, adjoining the Masterton Reform Block, and comprises sloping land with low, easy, flat-topped spurs. The soil is sandy clay, on papa formation, and is covered with manuka and scrub. The section is distant about fourteen miles from Makuri Township, seven miles being dray-road partly metalled, and seven miles a good bridle-track. The section is also distant about five miles from Pongaroa Township by a bridle-track.

Section 15, Block V., Manganui, is situated on the Middle Road, and adjoins the Waimarino Block. It comprises flat and undulating land. The soil is light, on sandstone formation, and is covered with forest of a mixed character, containing rimu, matai, maire, &c., with the usual undergrowth. The section is about eight miles distant from Raetihi Township, four miles being a formed dray-road and four miles a bridle-track.

Section 10, Block II., Makotuku, is situated on the Middle Road, in the Waimarino Block, and comprises undulating land, with about 40 acres of flat. It is well watered. The soil is volcanic, on a papa formation, covered with forest of a mixed character, containing rimu, matai, maire, &c., with the usual undergrowth. The section is about four miles from Raetihi Township, by a formed dray-road.

Sections 18 and 18A, Block VI., Puketoi, are situated on Saunders’s Road, on the east slope of the Puketoi Range, in the South Puketoi Block, and consist of land rising from 900 ft. at the front to 2,000 ft. at the back of the section, with good leading ridges throughout, and small flats along the road-frontage, where there is a good stream of water. The soil is good, on a sandstone-and-papa formation, and is covered with heavy bush of a mixed character, containing rimu, rata, tawa, and tawhero, with a thick undergrowth of supplejack, rangiora, &c. Access is by the Eketahuna–Alfredton and Saunders’s Roads, both of which are formed, the distance from Eketahuna Railway-station being about twenty-three miles.

SECOND-CLASS UNSURVEYED LAND.

This block is situated at the head of the Kaiwhata River, and lies between the properties of Messrs. Chalmers and McNaughton, and Messrs. Hitchings and Moore; the former being to the westward and the latter to the eastward of the land being offered. It comprises rough, open, and forest-clad hills intersected by deep gullies. The soil, generally speaking, is fair to poor in quality, resting on sandstone formation. The vegetation comprises tussock-grass and fern in the open portions. The forest, which is on the northern portion of the block, covers about 500 acres, and consists of birch with tawhero and a few other trees intermixed, and the usual undergrowth. The area is watered by permanent streams. There are rabbits on the block, which have to be kept down. The access is from the westward, via Tauern, Brancepeth, and Fernyhurst Homestead, the distance being about twenty-nine miles from Masterton. The road is formed for dray traffic to Fernyhurst, which is within five miles of the block, and is open for horse traffic to Mr. McRae’s, two miles from the block.
