Result of Poll for Proposed Loan, Taratahi-Carterton Road District, County of Wairarapa South.

THE following notice, received from the Chairman of the Taratahi-Carterton Road Board, is published in accordance with the provisions of “The Local Bodies’ Loans Act, 1886.”

TARATAHI-CARTERTON ROAD BOARD.

Result of Poll for Loan.

I HEREBY give public notice that the poll for No. 8 Subdivision of the Taratahi-Carterton Road District, taken on the 27th day of September, 1897, on the proposal to raise a loan of £3,000 under the provisions of “The Local Bodies’ Loans Act, 1896,” and “The Government Loans to Local Bodies Act, 1886,” and their respective amendments, for the purpose of reconstructing the bridges over the Ruamahanga River at Hurunuiorangi and Kokatau, resulted as follows:—

Total number of voters on the roll, 80; total number of votes exercisable by them, 163: Number of voters who voted for the proposal, 44; number of votes recorded for the proposal, 95; number of voters who voted against the proposal, 7; number of votes recorded against the proposal, 10.

I accordingly declare the above-mentioned proposal duly carried.

Proposed Loan No. 52, Bridge and Ridge Roads, £750.

THE following is the result of a poll taken on the 20th October, 1897, on a proposal to raise a loan of £750 under “The Government Loans to Local Bodies Act, 1886,” to form and repair formation and metal the Bridge Road from the Makakahi Railway-station to 5 chains south-east of the north-western boundary of Section 36, Block X., Mangahao, and that portion of Ridge Road from its intersection with Bridge Road, southward, 28 chains south of the boundary-line of Section 38, Block X., Mangahao :—

Number of ratepayers on special roll, 8, representing 8 votes: Number of votes in favour of proposal, 5; against, 1; votes not recorded, 2.

I therefore declare the proposal carried.

Result of Poll for Proposed Loan, Lower Wairau River District, County of Marlborough.

THE following notice, received from the Chairman of the Lower Wairau River Board, is published in accordance with the provisions of “The Local Bodies’ Loans Act, 1886.”

LOWER WAIRAU RIVER DISTRICT.

NOTICE is hereby given that the following is the result of a poll, taken on 16th October, 1897, on a proposal to raise a loan of £5,000 for the purpose of constructing flood relief and protective works on the banks of the Opawa and Omaka Rivers :—

Number of voters on roll, 531 ratepayers, exercising 779 votes: Number of ratepayers voted, 526; for the proposal, 305 ratepayers, casting 500 votes; against the proposal, 19 ratepayers, casting 25 votes; informal, 2 ratepayers, casting 2 votes: total votes recorded, 527.

As the number of ratepayers and votes recorded in favour of the proposal amounts to more than one-half of the number which can be exercised by the whole number of ratepayers, I hereby declare the proposal carried.

Special Order made by the Seatoun Road Board, County of Hutt.

THE following special order, made by the Seatoun Road Board, is published in accordance with the provisions of “The Road Boards Act, 1882.”

SPECIAL ORDER OF THE SEATOUN ROAD BOARD.

THAT this Board, to secure the payment of interest and other charges on a loan of £3,000 to be raised under “The Loans to Local Bodies Act, 1886,” and “The Government Loans to Local Bodies Act, 1886,” for the purpose of constructing roads in the Seatoun Road District, do hereby make and levy a special rate of 1½d. in the pound on the rateable value of all rateable lands within the boundaries of the Seatoun Road District, such rate to be an annually-recurring rate for twenty-six years, and be payable in two equal instalments, on the 1st day of the months of January and July in each year, at the office of the Board.

I hereby certify that the above special order has been made by the Seatoun Road Board in accordance with the provisions of “The Road Boards Act, 1882,” and was proposed at a meeting of the Board held on the 18th day of September, and passed at a meeting of the Board on the 19th day of October, 1897.

Notice respecting Raffles, &c., under Gaming and Lotteries Act.

Wellington, 25th October, 1897.

THE following extract from section 18 of “The Gaming and Lotteries Act, 1881,” is published for general information :—

“18. . . . If any person, being the owner of any painting, drawing, sculpture, or other work of art, or literature, or mineral specimens, or mechanical models, shall apply to the Colonial Secretary for permission to dispose of the same by raffle or chance, it shall be lawful for the Colonial Secretary, if he think fit, to grant a license for that purpose, subject to such conditions and restrictions as he may think it right to impose :

“And if such conditions and restrictions are complied with, the provisions of this Act, or any other law for the time being in force relating to gaming and lotteries, shall not apply to such owner or to any other persons who may be bonâ fide concerned in such transaction. . . .”

The words “or other work of art” in the above extract are held to mean articles of the nature of paintings, drawings, or sculptures. No articles except those mentioned in any license granted by the Colonial Secretary shall be disposed of by raffle or chance, either as gifts to prize-winners or on any other pretext. A copy of each license granted by the Colonial Secretary will be sent to the police, in order that proceedings may be taken in the event of any infringement of the Act.

Designation of Volunteer Corps changed.

HIS Excellency the Governor has been pleased to approve of the designation of the C Battery, New Zealand Regiment of Artillery Volunteers, being changed to the “Timaru City Rifle Volunteers,” with its present seniority in the New Zealand Volunteer Force, and with effect from the 5th October, 1897.
