HIS Excellency the Governor has, in terms of section 49 of “The Hospitals and Charitable Institutions Act, 1885,” appointed Saturday, the 11th day of September, 1897, at half-past 6 o’clock p.m., to be the time, and the Athenæum at Mercury Bay to be the place, for the first meeting of the contributors to the Mercury Bay Hospital.

Result of Poll for Loan.
I HEREBY give public notice that the poll of No. 4 Subdivision of the Taratahi-Carterton Road District, taken on the 28th day of August, 1897, on the proposal to raise a loan of £300, under the provisions of “The Local Bodies’ Loans Act, 1886,” and “The Government Loans to Local Bodies Act, 1886,” to form and metal a road known as “Para Road,” resulted as follows :—
Number of voters on the roll, 23 ; total number of votes exercisable, 41 : Number of voters who voted for proposal, 7 ; number of votes in favour of proposal, 15 ; number of voters who voted against proposal, 6 ; number of votes against proposal, 14.
I accordingly declare the above proposal rejected.

Result of Poll.
THE following is the result of poll of ratepayers taken on the 28th August, 1897, on a proposal to borrow £12,000 under “The Government Loans to Local Bodies Act, 1886,” for forming and metalling roads and erection and repairing of bridges within the county :—
Number of ratepayers on roll, 799 ; number of votes exercisable, 1,369 : Number of ratepayers who voted for proposal, 426 ; number of votes recorded for the proposal, 845 ; number of ratepayers who voted against proposal, 3 ; number of votes recorded against proposal, 6 ; informal, nil.
The number of voters and votes in favour of proposal being more than half of the total number exercisable, I hereby declare such proposal to be carried.

Alterations to the Scale of Fares, Rates, and Charges in Force upon the New Zealand Government Railways.
IN pursuance of all powers and authorities enabling me under “The Public Works Act, 1894,” and any amendment thereof, and also of “The Government Railways Act, 1894,” I, Alfred Jerome Cadman, the Minister for Railways, do hereby make the following alterations in the scale of fares, rates, and charges in force on the New Zealand Government railways open for traffic, such alterations to come into force on and after the 13th day of September, 1897 :—
