As to Recruiting for the New Zealand Permanent Militia.

A PROCLAMATION
Under “The Defence Act, 1886.”

  1. THE Proclamation published in Gazette No. 3, of the seventeenth day of January, one thousand eight hundred and eighty-nine, relative to recruiting for the Permanent Forces, is hereby cancelled, and the following substituted in lieu thereof:—

  2. In selecting recruits for the Artillery (No. 1 Company, Permanent Militia) and Torpedo Corps (No. 2 Company, Permanent Militia), preference will be given to members of the Volunteer Force who are between eighteen and twenty-eight years of age, and have at least one year’s efficient service at the time of making their application. Exception will be made in the case of special artificers, engineers, electricians, tradesmen, or men who have served in Her Majesty’s naval or military forces.

  3. The following regulations are published for the guidance of applicants desirous of entering the Permanent Militia:—

  4. Applicants for appointment to the Permanent Militia will send in their applications to, and wait on if necessary, the officer commanding Permanent Militia at Dunedin, Lyttelton, Wellington, or Auckland, with their addresses, ages, medical certificates of fitness, and certificates of character, one of which must be from the commanding officer of the corps in which they are serving.

  5. On being informed that he has been appointed, the candidate will report himself for enrolment at the Mount Cook Barracks, Buckle Street, Wellington, within twenty-one days, otherwise the vacancy will be offered to the next on the list, and he will be held to have forfeited his appointment, unless in case of certified sickness, when he may be replaced at the head of the list within three months if then fit for service.

  6. Candidates for appointment who do not receive intimation that they are to join the Forces before the first of January next after the date on which they made their original application are to renew such application. These further applications are to reach the officers named in paragraph four before the first of February in each year.

  7. In the event of a candidate failing to renew his application, as in paragraph six, his name will be struck off the list of those desirous of employment in the Permanent Force.

  8. The minimum height for the Artillery is five feet nine inches.

  9. The minimum height for the Torpedo is five feet six inches.

  10. Candidates for both the Artillery and Torpedo Corps must have a chest-measurement of thirty-six inches at full inspiration, and must also have been efficiently vaccinated.

  11. After three years’ full service in the Force, members will become eligible for transfer to the Police and Prison Departments.

Conferring Jurisdiction on Native Land Court.

ORDER IN COUNCIL.

At the Government House, at Wellington, this twenty-second day of February, 1897.

Present:

His Excellency the Administrator of the Government in Council.

WHEREAS by section fourteen of “The Native Land Court Act, 1894,” it is enacted that the Native Land Court shall, as regards all lands within the meaning of subsection ten of section fourteen aforesaid, have jurisdiction as in the said subsection mentioned: Provided that the Court shall not proceed to exercise such jurisdiction unless the Governor in Council shall by order authorise the same to be done:

And whereas the land specified in the Schedule hereto is land in respect whereof the Court has jurisdiction as aforesaid, and it is expedient that the Court should be authorised to exercise the same:

Now, therefore, His Excellency the Administrator of the Government of the Colony of New Zealand, by and with the advice and consent of the Executive Council of the said colony, doth hereby authorise the said Court to exercise in respect of the said land the jurisdiction conferred as aforesaid—that is to say, to determine whether or not the said land or any part thereof was, on the investigation of title thereto, intended by the Native Land Court, or by the nominal owner or owners of such land, to be held by such nominal owner or owners in trust for Natives not named in the title, and to determine who are the Natives (if any) entitled beneficially to such land, and to order the inclusion of such Natives in the title, either together with or in lieu of the nominal owners or any of them, and for the purpose aforesaid to order the cancellation or amendment of any existing instrument of title, and the issue of such new Crown grants or other instruments of title as may be necessary, and generally to exercise in respect of the said land all the jurisdiction and powers conferred on the Native Land Court by subsection ten of section fourteen of “The Native Land Court Act, 1894.”

SCHEDULE.

All that parcel of land in the Provincial District of Hawke’s Bay, situate at Porangahau, and known as Mangaorapa Block, containing 16,761 acres, more or less.

Powers delegated to the Woodbury Domain Board under “The Public Domains Act, 1881.”

ORDER IN COUNCIL.

At the Government House, at Wellington, this twenty-second day of February, 1897.

Present:

His Excellency the Administrator of the Government in Council.

IN exercise and pursuance of the powers and authorities vested in him by “The Public Domains Act, 1881,” His Excellency the Administrator of the Government of the Colony of New Zealand, by and with the advice and consent of the Executive Council thereof, doth hereby revoke a certain Order in Council, dated the sixteenth day of September, one thousand eight hundred and ninety-five, making delegation of certain powers in manner as therein appears; and doth, with the like advice and consent, by this present Order, delegate, but only with respect to the piece or parcel of land described in the Schedule hereto, all the powers conferred by the Act aforesaid, except the powers under or conferred by sections five and twelve thereof, to the under-mentioned persons, who shall be known as the Woodbury Public Domain Board, namely,—

FREDERICK ROBERT FLATMAN,
JOSEPH WOODING,
JOHN THATCHER,
ALEXANDER CORMACK, and
HENRY FABER BROWN

(hereinafter referred to as “the Board”), subject to the stipulations hereinafter contained, that is to say,—

  1. The Board shall meet for the transaction of business on the first Monday in each month, at half-past seven o’clock p.m., at the Woodbury Schoolhouse, or at such other time or place as may from time to time be fixed by the Board. The first meeting shall be held on Monday, the fifth day of April, one thousand eight hundred and ninety-seven.
