Declaring that the Protection of a Part of the Northern Bank
of the Ashley River, in the Kowai Road District, shall be
a Public Work.

A PROCLAMATION.
WHEREAS by section one hundred and sixty-four of
"The Public Works Act, 1894," it is, inter alia,
enacted that whenever it is found desirable, for the safety
or proper maintenance of any public work constructed or
authorised under the authority of Her Majesty or the
Governor, or the Government of the colony, or by or under
the provisions of any Act of the General Assembly, to pro-
tect, alter, or divert, either wholly or partially, any river,
stream, or watercourse, the Governor, by Proclamation,
may declare that the course of such river, stream, or water-
course shall be protected, altered, or diverted, and there-
upon the said protection, alteration, or diversion shall be a
public work within the meaning of the said Act:
And whereas a certain public work, to wit, the protection
to the north bank of the Ashley River, between the railway-
bridge and the sea, is endangered by the said river en-
croaching thereon, and it is desirable to further protect the
bank of such river by planting willows thereon, for the
safety and proper maintenance and strengthening of the
said river-bank, and to prevent further encroachment of the
Ashley River on to the roads and lands immediately ad-
joining:
Now, therefore, I, Uchter John Mark, Earl of Ranfurly,
the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, in pursuance
and in exercise of the powers granted by the hereinbefore in
part recited Act, and of every other power and authority in
anywise enabling me in this behalf, do hereby proclaim and
declare that the work of planting of willows for protective
purposes on the northern bank of the Ashley River, hereto-
fore executed and hereafter to be done, shall be a public
work, and such work shall for all purposes be taken and
deemed to have been executed under the authority of the
said Act.
SCHEDULE.
All that area in the Canterbury Land District bounded
towards the south by the Ashley River from the south-
eastern boundary of Reserve No. 91 to the Ashley Bridge;
towards the west by the road bounding Section No. 2163,
Block VI., Rangiora Survey District; towards the north-
west by the Upper Sefton Road and its continuation past
Sections Nos. 2545, 3748, 2083, 13753, and 9277 of Block IV.
of said district; and towards the south-east generally by
the road passing Sections Nos. 16543, 19658, and 536, to the
southernmost corner of the last-mentioned section; thence
by a right line to the northernmost corner of Reserve 91,
and by a road bounding that reserve on the north-east to the
Ashley River: as the same is delineated upon the plan
marked S.G. 15167, deposited in the Head Office of the
Department of Lands and Survey, at Wellington, in the
Wellington Land District, and thereon coloured red.

tahu Block, Nukumaru Survey District.

A PROCLAMATION.
IN pursuance and in exercise of the powers conferred by
section thirteen of "The Land Act, 1892," I, Uchter
John Mark, Earl of Ranfurly, the Governor of the Colony
of New Zealand, with the consent of the owner of the
lands hereinafter mentioned, and with the consent of the
Waitotara County Council, being the local authority in
whose district the said land is situated, do by this notice
hereby proclaim as a road the land mentioned in the Sche-
dule hereto.
