mate, of a steamship or sailing-vessel of not less than 300
tons register, trading on the coast of New Zealand.
4. He must pass an examination before an Examiner of
Masters and Mates in the following subjects:—
(a.) In the colour test as prescribed in the regulations
for the examination of masters and mates.
(b.) Knowledge of the number, description, and charac-
teristics of the New Zealand lights, and as to
which of them are connected with the telegraph
system of the colony.
(c.) Knowledge of magnetic and true courses between all
prominent headlands.
(d.) Knowledge of dangers lying off the coasts, &c., and
the anchorages, harbours of refuge, and road-
steads on the coasts.
(e.) Knowledge of times of high water on the New Zea-
land coasts, the direction and set of the tides,
ebb and flood, and of the currents.
5. The Minister shall appoint the Examiner, and fix the
time and place for the examination.

General.
6. Every application for a colonial pilot's license shall be
made in writing to the Secretary of the Marine Department.
7. Every applicant must submit, with his application, his
master's certificate, a satisfactory certificate as to his coastal
service, and a satisfactory certificate of good conduct and
sobriety during the twelve months immediately preceding
the date of his application.
8. Every applicant must have served in vessels trading on
the New Zealand coasts within the five years immediately
preceding the date of his application.
9. An applicant whose service has been in Her Majesty's
navy, who does not hold a certificate as master ordinary,
must have obtained the rank of navigating sub-lieutenant.
If he cannot show the service required under Regulation
No. 3, he must have served two years within the last five
years next prior to his application in one of Her Majesty's
vessels stationed in New Zealand in a capacity not lower
than that of navigating sub-lieutenant.
10. A fee of £1 will be charged for each examination, half
of which will be returned in case of failure to pass.
11. An annual fee of £3 will be charged for every license
issued under these regulations.
12. The licenses shall be issued by the Secretary of the
Marine Department at Wellington, and shall be in the form
set forth in the Schedule hereto.
13. Every license shall continue in force for twelve months
only, but on the expiration of that period the holder will
be entitled to a fresh license on payment of the aforesaid
annual fee of £3.
14. All the provisions of "The Shipping and Seamen's
Act, 1877," relating to investigations instituted under sec-
tion 119 into alleged incompetency or misconduct, and to pre-
liminary inquiries and formal investigations made under
sections 237 and 240 into shipping casualties, shall apply to
colonial pilots as fully and effectually to all intents and pur-
poses as to masters and mates.

This license continues in force for twelve months only,
and expires on the day of , 18 .

Fixing Shooting Season for Deer, License-fee, &c., Marl-
borough District.

IN exercise of the powers vested in me by "The Animals
Protection Act, 1880," and the Acts amending the same,
I, James Prendergast, Knight, Chief Justice, in the name
and on behalf of His Excellency the Governor of the Colony
of New Zealand, and as his duly-appointed Deputy, do
hereby notify that deer (bucks or stags only) may be taken or
killed within the Marlborough District, comprising the
Counties of Marlborough and Sounds, from Saturday, the
sixteenth day of February, one thousand eight hundred and
ninety-five, to Monday, the eighth day of April, one thousand
eight hundred and ninety-five, both inclusive (subject, never-
theless, to the restrictions in the said Acts mentioned); and
I do further notify that licenses to take or kill such game
within the said district shall be issued on payment of the
sum of twenty shillings each, and that licenses to sell such
game shall be issued on payment of the sum of five pounds
each; and the Chief Postmaster at Blenheim is hereby ap-
pointed to issue the said licenses.
As witness the hand of Sir James Prendergast, Knight,
Chief Justice, as such Deputy as aforesaid, this
fifth day of February, one thousand eight hundred
and ninety-five.

WHEREAS by the two hundred and thirty-fifth section of "The Land Act, 1892," it is enacted that the Governor
may from time to time, either by general or particular description, and whether the same has been surveyed or
not, reserve from sale temporarily, notwithstanding that the same may be then held under pastoral license, any Crown
lands which in his opinion are required for any of the purposes in the said section mentioned:
Now, therefore, I, James Prendergast, Knight, Chief Justice, in the name and on behalf of His Excellency the Governor
of the Colony of New Zealand, and as his duly-appointed Deputy, in exercise and pursuance of the power and authority
vested in me by the said Act, do hereby temporarily reserve from sale the lands in the Land Districts of Auckland,
Taranaki, Wellington, Nelson, Marlborough, Canterbury, Otago, and Southland enumerated in the first column of the
Schedule hereto for the purposes specified in the second column of the said Schedule, and opposite the descriptions of the
lands so intended to be temporarily reserved.
