Notice to Mariners, No. 29 of 1893.

THE following Notices to Mariners, received from the
Colonial Secretary, Cape Colony, and the Port-
master, Brisbane, Queensland, are published for general
information.

SOUTH AFRICA, WEST COAST, CAPE OF GOOD HOPE:
DASSEN ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE.—FIRST-ORDER LIGHT.

It is hereby notified that, in accordance with Notices to
Mariners, dated respectively the 30th July, 1891, and the
9th March, 1893, a double-flashing half-minute white light
of the first order was exhibited from the new lighthouse on
Dassen Island on the 15th April, 1893, and will continue to
be shown hereafter.

The duration of the flashes and eclipses is approximately
as follows: Flash, 3 seconds; eclipse, 4 seconds; flash, 3
seconds; eclipse, 20 seconds: total, 30 seconds=½ minute.

The light has an elevation of 155ft. above high-water level,
ordinary spring tides, and is visible in clear weather at a
distance of 18½ nautical miles from the lighthouse.

Dassen Island lies about 4½ miles off the south-west coast
of the Cape Colony, in latitude 33° 26' south, and longitude
18° 54' east; and it is distant from Cape Town about 33
nautical miles.

INNER ROUTE TO TORRES STRAIT.—REPORTED DANGERS,
PRINCESS CHARLOTTE BAY.

MR. S. CLARKE, engaged in pearl-shelling, reports the exist-
ence of two dangers in the following positions, viz.:—

A reef about a quarter of a mile in extent, with a depth
of 3 fathoms on it. Bay Hill in line with Bathurst Head,
bearing E. ½ S., and Cl Reef bearing N.E.

A reef of small extent, with two pinnacles on which there is
3½ fathoms at low water, lying about W. ½ N. 3½ miles
from the beacon on Cl Reef.

The first-named danger lies on the recommended night-
course, off Princess Charlotte Bay, and the latter one on
or near to the usual day-course. Mariners are therefore
cautioned to exercise great care in that vicinity.

Notice to Mariners, No. 30 of 1893.

KAIPARA HARBOUR.—BANKS EXTENDING, OTAMATEA
CHANNEL.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 6th July, 1893.

NOTICE is hereby given that the Harbourmaster at
Kaipara reports that the 3-fathom bank in the
Otamatea Channel, marked on the chart S.W. by W. ½ W.
of, and two miles distant from, Orewa Mound, is shoaling
and extending both north and south of its charted position;
also that the Middle Bank is extending; and an oval-shaped
bank, with 3½ fathoms at low water, is forming about three
or four cables to the southward of the red buoy on the outer
end of the Middle Bank.

Prizes for Collections of Dried Specimens of Grasses and
Forage Plants.—Notice No. 369.

Department of Agriculture,
Wellington, 9th May, 1893.

PRIZES offered for collections of dried specimens of
grasses and forage plants, introduced and native, pro-
minence being given to the most useful indigenous species.
First prize, £25; second, £15.

All specimens must have been gathered in the colony.

Each specimen must be mounted on paper, 18in. by 11in.,
and bear, if possible, both popular and scientific names, also
the name of the locality where obtained.

The collections winning the prizes are to become the pro-
perty of the department, where they will remain on exhibi-
tion, with the names of the collectors affixed.

All collections for competition must be delivered at the
office of the Secretary for Agriculture, at the Government
Buildings, Wellington, not later than the 31st March, 1894.

Each collection must be marked with a motto, and be
accompanied by a sealed envelope containing a copy of such
motto, together with the full name and address of the
exhibitor.

The unsuccessful exhibits will be returned to the owners
carriage-free.

The judges have power to withhold the prizes if they are
of opinion that none of the collections are worthy of an
award.

Prizes for Collections of Noxious Weeds and Insects.—
Notice No. 368.

Wellington, 9th May, 1893.

THE date for receiving the collections mentioned in
Gazette Notice No. 365, and dated the 7th April, 1893,
has been extended to the 31st March, 1894.

Notice No. 365.

Department of Agriculture,
Wellington, 7th April, 1893.

PRIZES offered for collections of noxious weeds and
insects, &c.:—

Collection of noxious weeds: First prize, £10; second, £5.
All specimens must have been gathered in the colony.

Each specimen must be mounted on paper 18in. by 11in.,
and bear, if possible, the popular and scientific name, also
the locality where gathered.

Collection of insects injurious to New Zealand vegetation,
and their natural enemies and parasites: First prize, £10;
second, £5.

All insects must be properly set and named, also have
locality tickets attached.

The collections winning the prizes to become the property
of the department, where they will remain on exhibition
with the name of the collector affixed.

All collections for competition must be delivered at the

Lease of Nelson Creek Water-race.

Mines Department,
Wellington, 30th June, 1893.

SEPARATE written tenders will be received at this office
up to noon of Monday, the 24th July next, for leases,
under the provisions of "The Public Works Act, 1882," of
the Nelson Creek Water-race and of Magee's Water-race
for a period of three years from the 1st day of August, 1893.

The terms and conditions upon which these races will be
leased can be seen at this office, as well as at the Warden's
Offices at Greymouth and Ahaura.

The highest tender will not necessarily be accepted for
either race.
