MANAWATU ROAD BOARD.
RESULT of poll taken on the 29th day of May, 1893, on the
proposal to raise a loan of £600, under "The Government
Loans to Local Bodies Act, 1886," to form and metal the
Bunnythorpe-Kairanga and Karere Roads from Section
No. 1582 to a point distant 25 chains from the Foxton
Road:—
Number of ratepayers on special roll, 13, representing 22
votes; 10 ratepayers, representing 12 votes, voted in favour
of the proposal; and 3 ratepayers, representing 10 votes, did
not vote.
I therefore declare the proposal to be carried.

Appointing Patea a Port at which Customs Agents must
be licensed.
CUSTOMS.—In exercise of the powers in me for this
purpose vested by "The Customs Laws Consolidation
Act, 1882," I, the Commissioner of Trade and Customs, do
hereby appoint and declare that the
Port of Patea
shall be a port at which persons acting as agents in the
entrance or clearance of ships, goods, or baggage, or any
business relating thereto, shall be required to be duly licensed
for that purpose.

Notice to Mariners, No. 28 of 1893.

WITH reference to Notice to Mariners, No. 8, of the
9th March last, it is hereby notified that the Presi-
dency Port Officer at Madras reports that the exhibition of
the new light at that place is postponed until further notice.

Notice of Intention to take Land for the Use of the Whau
Lunatic Asylum, Auckland.
NOTICE is hereby given that certain land is required
for the use and convenience of the Whau Lunatic
Asylum, Auckland, to be used and cultivated in connection
with such asylum, and that for such purposes the land
described in the Schedule hereto is required to be taken
under the provisions of "The Public Works Act, 1882," and
"The Public Works Acts Amendment Act, 1892." And
notice is hereby further given that a plan showing the area
of the land so required to be taken is deposited in the Public
Works Office, Auckland, and is there open for inspection;
and that all persons affected by the taking of the said land
shall, if they have any well-grounded objections thereto, set
forth such objections in writing, and send such writing,
within forty days from the first publication of this notice, to
the Minister for Public Works, Wellington.

IT is hereby notified that His Excellency the Governor
has been pleased to pronounce the under-mentioned
gold-mining lease cancelled, and that the ground is now
open for application as if no lease of the said ground had
ever been applied for :—

Prizes for Collections of Noxious Weeds and Insects.—
Notice No. 365.
Department of Agriculture,
Wellington, 7th April, 1893.
PRIZES offered for collections of noxious weeds and
insects, &c. :—
Collection of noxious weeds: First prize, £10; second, £5.
All specimens must have been gathered in the colony.
Each specimen must be mounted on paper 18in. by 11in.,
and bear, if possible, the popular and scientific name, also
the locality where gathered.
Collection of insects injurious to New Zealand vegetation,
and their natural enemies and parasites: First prize, £10;
second, £5.
All insects must be properly set and named, also have
locality tickets attached.
The collections winning the prizes to become the property
of the department, where they will remain on exhibition
with the name of the collector affixed.
All collections for competition must be delivered at the
office of the Secretary for Agriculture, at the Government
Buildings, at Wellington, not later than the 31st December,
1893.
Each collection must be marked with a motto, and
accompanied by a sealed envelope containing a copy of such
motto, together with the full name and address of the
exhibitor.
The unsuccessful exhibits will be returned to the owners
carriage-free.

Forage Plants.—Notice No. 369.

Wellington, 9th May, 1893.
PRIZES offered for collections of dried specimens of
grasses and forage plants, introduced and native, pro-
minence being given to the most useful indigenous species.
First prize, £25; second, £15.
All specimens must have been gathered in the colony.

the name of the locality where obtained.
The collections winning the prizes are to become the pro-
perty of the department, where they will remain on exhibi-
