Customs Holiday.

HIS Excellency the Governor has been pleased to ap-
point that Monday, the 11th November proximo,
shall be a Customs holiday throughout the colony, except in
the Provincial District of Canterbury, where Friday, the
8th November, shall be a Customs holiday for the celebra-
tion of the Prince of Wales's Birthday.

Notice to Mariners, No. 29 of 1889.
MANUKAU HARBOUR. SIGNALS FOR MAIN CHANNEL.
Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 29th October, 1889.
NOTICE is hereby given that, on and after the 1st
December, 1889, the following signals will be added to
the special code of signals shown from the signal-station at
the South Head, Manukau Harbour:-
"Steamer: Take the Main Channel." Two balls vertical
at the north yard-arm.
"Sailing-vessel: Take the Main Channel." Two balls
vertical lowered half-way from the north yard-arm.
NOTE. As the signal-station is a considerable distance
from the entrance to the main channel, the signals, except
in exceptionally clear weather, cannot be made out without
the aid of glasses.

Alterations and Additions to the Scale of Fares, Rates, and
Charges in force upon the New Zealand Railways.
THE New Zealand Railway Commissioners, in exercise
and pursuance of the powers conferred by "The
Government Railways Act, 1887," do hereby make the fol-
lowing alterations in and additions to the scale of fares,
rates, and charges on the New Zealand Railways, to come
into force on and after the 1st day of January, 1890:-
PART II.-LUGGAGE, PARCELS, ETC.
Newspapers.
Newspapers (published at intervals not exceeding seven
days) and periodicals (published at intervals not exceeding
one month) will be conveyed subject to the following regula-
tions, viz.:-
- The packages must be open at both ends.
- No receipts will be given for the packages; they will
be conveyed at owner's risk, the Commissioners not being
liable for damage, delay, detention, or loss; and they must
be brought to, and taken from, the railway by the owners.
If the owner desires them conveyed at Commissioners' risk,
the ordinary parcel rates will be charged. - The packages must be prepaid by affixing stamps,
which can be obtained from the Managers' offices. Pack-
ages insufficiently stamped will be charged the difference
between the amount represented by the labels affixed and
the full ordinary parcel rates, and the Commissioners will
not be responsible for any delay which may arise in conse-
quence. - A declaration that the parcels do not contain other
than the articles mentioned above must be printed or plainly
written on the address, thus: "Newspapers only." - The Commissioners reserve the right to open out and
examine packages. -

GENERAL FARES AND REGULATIONS.
Commutation Tickets.
Fifty-trip tickets are issued for distances not over twenty
miles.
They are available for one month from the date of issue.
Any portion punched, detached, or not used before the
ticket expires is not available for use.
No reduction in charge is made for children.
The tickets are not transferable.
They will be charged as follows:-
