Hydraulic Cranes.

Loading or unloading by hydraulic cranes will be done at
the option of the Railway Manager, and when not otherwise
provided the charge will be 6d. a ton, with a minimum
charge of 2s. 6d. per lift.

When cranes are not in general use the Railway Manager
may, at his option, make special charges for their use, but
no less charge than 30s. per hour, or part thereof, will be
made per crane.

Notice of Hearing of Applications for Patents.

Patent Office,
Wellington, 13th September, 1889.

NO. 3943.-RICHARD WILLIAM HENN, of Wellington, New
Zealand, Venetian Blind-maker, has deposited at this
office a specification of an invention for further improve-
ments in the manufacture of Venetian blinds, consisting of
an improved gripper in combination with his combined
mortise and cord-guide.

No. 3944. ELIZABETH ANN LOUISA MACKAY, Wife of
Robert Mackay, of Suburban North, Nelson, New Zealand,
Hotelkeeper, has deposited at this office a specification of an
invention for an improved pot or pan for cooking purposes,
to be called "Mrs. Mackay's Patent."

No. 3945.-THOMAS KNIGHT STEANES, of 56, Margaret
Street, Sydney, New South Wales, Manufacturers' Represen-
tative, has deposited at this office a specification of an
invention for improvements in process of and apparatus for
manufacturing carburetted hydrogen gas, and for cleansing
gas for illuminating, heating, motor-power, and other pur-
poses.

No. 3946.-KATE EVENDEN and ROBERT EDWARD EVEN-
DEN, of Wellington, New Zealand have deposited at this
office a specification of an invention for an improved nail for
corrugated iron and for some other purposes.

No. 3948.-ARTHUR THOMAS HENRY PATEMAN, of Cunna-
mulla, Queensland, Gentleman, has deposited at this office a
specification of an invention for an improved composition to
be used in the destruction of rabbits and other burrowing
vermin.

No. 3949.-ALFRED FRANCIS ALLCHIN, WALTER JOSEPH
ALLCHIN, and SAMUEL MORRELL, trading as "Allchin,
Morrell, and Company," at No. 5, Doveton Street North,
Ballarat West, Victoria, Saddlers, have deposited at this
office a specification of an invention for improvements in
leggings.

And I have appointed Thursday, the 5th day of Decem-
ber next, at 11 o'clock in the forenoon, at this office, to hear
the said applications and all objections thereto; and I re-
quire all persons having an interest in opposing the grant
of any such Letters Patent to leave, on or before the 20th
day of November next, at this office, particulars in writing
of their objections to any of the said applications, otherwise
they will be precluded from urging the same.

Alterations and Additions to the Scale of Fares, Rates, and
Charges in force on the New Zealand Railways.

THE New Zealand Railway Commissioners, in exercise
and pursuance of the powers conferred by "The
Government Railways Act, 1887," do hereby make the
following alterations in and additions to the scale of fares,
rates, and charges on the New Zealand Railways, to come
into force on and after the 23rd day of September, 1889:-

PART V.-CLASSIFICATION OF GOODS.

Notice to Companies under "The Property Assessment
Act, 1885."

IN accordance with the provisions of the above-mentioned
Act, I hereby give public notice that, in respect of Joint-
stock Companies and in respect of Gold-mining Companies,
the 15th day of October next is the date, and my office,
Government Buildings, Wellington, is the place, at which
the Public Officers of all companies are requested to furnish
statements of property belonging to such companies, in
accordance with the said Act.

land, New Zealand, Bootmaker, JOHN EDWARD
LANGTON, of Nelson Street, Auckland, aforesaid, Bricklayer,
and JOHN HERBERT, of Summer Street, Ponsonby, Auckland,
aforesaid, Bricklayer, have deposited at this office a specifica-
tion of an invention for a new fuel, called "The Patent
Composite Combustible Brick."

No. 3951.-BENJAMIN WILLS BETTS, of Milton Street,
Mount Eden, Auckland, New Zealand, Architect, and HENRY
SANKEY, of Seymour Street, Ponsonby, Auckland, aforesaid,
Gentleman, have deposited at this office a specification of an
invention for regulating the flow of liquids from a reservoir,
to be called "Betts and Sankey's Patent Bird-fountain and
Syphon Liquid-regulator."

No. 3952.-BENJAMIN BAYNES, of Christchurch, New
Zealand, Grain Merchant, has deposited at this office a
specification of an invention for horse-collars, to be called
"B. Baynes's Patent Air-collars for Horses."

No. 3953.-THOMAS SAMUEL GRACE, of Blenheim, New
Zealand, Clerk in Holy Orders, has deposited at this office a
specification of an invention for an apparatus for drying and
bleaching the fibre of the Phormium tenax in the open air.

No. 3954.-CHARLES LANGDON-DAVIES, of Mowbray House,
Victoria Embankment, London, England, Electrician, has
deposited at this office a specification of an invention for im-
provements in the rhythmic generation of electric currents.

No. 3955.-JOHN COLE EDWARDS, of Wellington, New
Zealand, Printer, has deposited at this office a specification
of an invention for a game played with printed cards, to be
called "Quintets and Quartets," being an adaptation of a
well-known game called "Quartets" to the purposes of an
advertising medium.

And I have appointed Tuesday, the 10th day of Decem-
ber next, at 11 o'clock in the forenoon, at this office, to hear
the said applications and all objections thereto; and I re-

Te Makarini Scholarships, held at Te Aute College, Hawke's
Bay.

THREE scholarships of the yearly value of Β£35, tenable
for two years, are offered for competition. One of
these scholarships is open to all Maoris that have regularly
and continuously attended a Native school during the pre-
vious year, and are under sixteen years of age at the end of
the month preceding the date of the examination; the
other two scholarships are open to all Maoris that are under
fifteen years of age at the end of the month preceding the
date of the examination, and that have attended a Native
village school regularly and continuously during the previous
twelve months. These scholarships are offered for competi-
tion to Maori youths, on the conditions laid down in the
regulations of the Trustees of the Te Makarini Scholarships
Fund, as printed in the Native Schools Code, 1886, and in
the supplementary regulations sent out to all teachers in
May of the current year. The examination will be held at
convenient centres on the 16th and 17th December, 1889.

Candidates must, either directly or through their teachers,
send notice to the Inspector of Native Schools, Education
Department, Wellington, of their intention to present them-
selves for examination. Such notice must be posted not
later than the 31st October next.

Copies of the regulations and forms of notice may be
obtained from teachers of Native schools and boarding insti-
tutions, the Secretaries to Education Boards, or the Secre-
tary to the Education Department.
