Civil Service Senior Examination.

IN pursuance of regulations under "The Civil Service
Reform Act, 1886," notice is hereby given that for the
Senior Examination of January, 1890, the period of litera-
ture will be the latter half of the Eighteenth Century, and
the special books will be Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice,
and Goldsmith's Vicar of Wakefield.

No. 3899.-ALFRED WALKER, of Auckland, New Zealand,
Boot Manufacturer, has deposited at this office a specifica-
tion of an invention for a watertight boot, to be called "The
Bushranger."

No. 3900.-JOHN HICKES, of High Street, Auckland, New
Zealand, Settler, has deposited at this office a specification
of an invention for an improvement in the construction of
tobacco-pipes, to be called "The Auckland Well-pipe."

No. 3901.-WALTER BROWN, of Invercargill, New Zealand,
Blacksmith, has deposited at this office a specification of an
invention for improvements in road-scoop handles, to be
known as "Brown's Road-scoop Handles."

No. 3903.-VILLERS WALTER BEERE, of Wellington, New
Zealand, Mechanical Engineer, has deposited at this office a
specification of an invention for the greater development of
the illuminating power of kerosene, to be called "Petrolina
Gas."

No. 3904.-ROBERT COCKERELL, of Invercargill, New Zea-
land, Agricultural-implement Maker, has deposited at
this office a specification of an invention for the reverse-action
driving-floats in running water, for pumping water and other
purposes.

And I have appointed Friday, the 22nd day of November
next, at 11 o'clock in the forenoon, at this office, to hear
the said applications and all objections thereto; and I re-
quire all persons having an interest in opposing the grant
of any such Letters Patent to leave, on or before the 7th
day of November next, at this office, particulars in writing
of their objections to any of the said applications, otherwise
they will be precluded from urging the same.

No. 3906.-THOMAS PRINGLE, Manager, Haldon Station,
Mackenzie County, New Zealand, has deposited at this
office a specification of an invention for wire-straining.

No. 3907.-THOMAS PRINGLE, of Haldon Station, Mac-
kenzie County, New Zealand, has deposited at this office a
specification of an invention for wire-straining.

No. 3908.-ROBERT COCKERELL, of Invercargill, New Zea-
land, Agricultural-implement Maker, has deposited at this
office a specification of an invention for a flexible-framed life-
boat.

No. 3909.-GEORGE MATHISON and WILLIAM MATHISON, of
Roslyn, Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand, Sheep-farmers, have
deposited at this office a specification of an invention for
curing and baiting, fit for tanning, all animal-hides and skins,
and for cleaning and extracting hair and wool from all hides
and skins.

No. 3910.-THOMAS PRINGLE, of Haldon Station, Mac-
kenzie County, New Zealand, has deposited at this office
a specification of an invention for a temporary fencing-
standard.

And I have appointed Tuesday, the 26th day of November
next, at 11 o'clock in the forenoon, at this office, to hear
the said applications and all objections thereto; and I require
all persons having an interest in opposing the grant of any
such Letters Patent to leave, on or before the 11th day of
November next, at this office, particulars in writing of their

Native Land Court Notices.

Application for Rehearing of Claim dismissed.

NATIVE LAND COURT, NEW ZEALAND:
DISTRICT OF AUCKLAND.

IN the matter of a decision of the Court given at Otoro-
hanga, on the 7th day of December, 1888, upon the
hearing of a claim for investigation of title to land known
as Orahiri No. 3; and in the matter of an application by
Te Ruitoto Aihe and Huirama Rapata for a rehearing upon
such claim :

And in the matter of an order for a rehearing made upon
inquiry in open Court at Otorohanga, on the 4th day of June,
1889, by the Chief Judge, assisted by William Hughes, an
Assessor of the Court, subject to the condition that the said
Te Ruitoto Aihe and Huirama Rapata should, on or before
the 1st day of August, 1889, deposit with the Registrar the
sum of Β£10 as security for the cost of such rehearing, and
failing compliance therewith that the said application should
be dismissed; and it appearing that such condition has not
been performed:

I, Hugh Garden Seth Smith, Chief Judge of the said Court,
in exercise of the authority in that behalf vested in me,
do hereby dismiss such application.
