Proposed Addition to the Borough of Port Chalmers.

Wellington, 24th August, 1889.
A PETITION having been presented to His Excellency
the Governor praying that the district described in
the Schedule hereto might be incorporated into the Borough
of Port Chalmers, His Excellency directs it to be notified
that, unless within two months from the publication hereof
a petition or petitions, as required by section 32 of "The
Municipal Corporations Act, 1886," is or are presented to His
Excellency, he will proceed to incorporate the said district
into the said Borough of Port Chalmers, and will add the
same to the High Ward.

SCHEDULE.
DISTRICT PROPOSED TO BE INCORPORATED INTO THE BOROUGH
OF PORT CHALMERS.
ALL that area in the County of Waikouaiti, situate in Blocks
I. and II., Lower Harbour West Survey District. Bounded
towards the north-west by a district road from the Purakanui
Road, near Section No. 5, Block II., to Section No. 3, Block
I.; thence towards the north-east by the said Section No. 3
to Otago Harbour; thence towards the south-east and again
towards the north-east by high-water mark of Otago Har-
bour; again towards the south-east by the Town-belt of Port
Chalmers; and towards the south-west by Section No. 4,
Block II., and Purakanui Road.

THE following notice, received from the Masterton Road
Board, is published in accordance with "The Local
Bodies' Loans Act, 1886."

RESULT of a poll taken by the Masterton Road Board, on the
17th instant, on the proposal to borrow the sum of £100,
under "The Government Loans to Local Bodies Act, 1886,"
for the purpose of forming and metalling a portion of road
at Upper Manaia, in No. 2 Subdivision of the Masterton
Road District:-
Number of votes exercisable, 7. Number of votes recorded
for proposal, 4; number of votes recorded against proposal,
nil; number of votes not recorded, 3.
As the number of ratepayers interested in raising the loan
is 7, and as a majority voted for the proposal, I hereby de-
clare the same to be duly carried.

Special Order made by Wirokino Road Board, County

THE following special order, made by the Wirokino
Road Board, is published in accordance with "The
Road Boards Act, 1882."

SPECIAL ORDER MADE BY THE WIROKINO ROAD BOARD ON
SATURDAY, 24TH AUGUST, 1889.
RESOLVED, That this Board do now strike a special and
annually-recurring rate for twenty-six years of five-sixteenths
of a penny in the pound on all rateable properties within the
Wirokino Road District, with the exception of Crown and
Native lands within the meaning of "The Crown and Native
Lands Rating Act, 1882," for the purpose of paying interest
and other annual charges on a loan of £6,000, raised under
"The Government Loans to Local Bodies Act, 1886," for the
construction of various roads within the Wirokino Road
District, as per schedule, and shall be payable at the Board's
office, in one instalment, on the 1st July in each year.

I hereby certify that the foregoing special order was made
in accordance with law, and that all the requirements of
"The Road Boards Act, 1882," and "The Local Bodies'
Loans Act, 1886," have been fully complied with.

sington, Dunedin, New Zealand, Chemist, has applied
to register, under "The Trade Marks Act, 1866," the trade
mark of which the following is a description:-

A red Maltese cross on a black ground, surmounted by the
words "Red Cross."
Nature of the Articles to which it is intended such Trade

Notice of Intention to take Land for a Road in Section
175, Block VIII., Mangaone.
NOTICE is hereby given that it is proposed, under the
provisions of "The Public Works Act, 1882," to exe-
cute a certain public work, to wit, the construction of a road
in Section 175, Block VIII., Mangaone Survey District, Pro-
vincial District of Wellington, and for the purposes of such
public work the lands described in the Schedule hereto are
required to be taken; and notice is further given that the
plans of the said road and of the land so required to be
taken are deposited in the post office at Eketahuna, and are
there open for inspection. And notice is hereby given that
all persons affected by the execution of the said public work
or by the taking of the said lands shall, if they have any
well-grounded objections to the execution of the said public
work or to the taking of such lands, set forth the same in
writing, and send such writing, within forty days from the
first publication of this notice, to the Minister for Public
Works, Wellington.

Te Makarini Scholarships, held at Te Aute College, Hawke's
Bay.
THREE scholarships of the yearly value of £35, tenable
for two years, are offered for competition. One of
these scholarships is open to all Maoris that have regularly
and continuously attended a Native school during the pre-
vious year, and are under sixteen years of age at the end of
the month preceding the date of the examination; the
other two scholarships are open to all Maoris that are under
fifteen years of age at the end of the month preceding the
date of the examination, and that have attended a Native
village school regularly and continuously during the previous
twelve months. These scholarships are offered for competi-
tion to Maori youths, on the conditions laid down in the
regulations of the Trustees of the Te Makarini Scholarships
Fund, as printed in the Native Schools Code, 1886, and in
the supplementary regulations sent out to all teachers in
May of the current year. The examination will be held at
convenient centres on the 16th and 17th December, 1889.
Candidates must, either directly or through their teachers,
send notice to the Inspector of Native Schools, Education
Department, Wellington, of their intention to present them-
selves for examination. Such notice must be posted not
later than the 31st October next.
Copies of the regulations and forms of notice may be
obtained from teachers of Native schools and boarding insti-
tutions, the Secretaries to Education Boards, or the Secre-
tary to the Education Department.
