Wellington, 14th August, 1889.
THE following list of awards of the Royal Humane
Society of Australasia, granted in New Zealand during
the year 1888-89, is published for general information.
T. W. HISLOP.
LIST OF AWARDS FOR THE COLONY OF NEW ZEALAND.
WILLIAM SMITH (aged twenty years), ship's steward on the
"Rotomahana," rescued Mrs. Robert Hardy from drowning
at Auckland wharf on the 11th August, 1886. A cab and pair
of horses, and Mrs. Hardy, of Auckland, having been precipi-
tated off the wharf into the harbour, Mr. William Smith,
taking off his coat, went to Mrs. Hardy's assistance. He
supported her and assisted her alongside one of the stringers
of the wharf until a boat was lowered and took them ashore.
Awarded a bronze medal.
EDWARD J. ROBINSON (aged twenty-four years), a clerk in
Her Majesty's Customs at Wellington, rescued William
Albert Jenkins, a boy, aged nine years, from drowning in the
Boat Harbour, Wellington, on the 21st May, 1888. Upon
seeing the boy fall into the water Robinson ran to the place
where the accident occurred (about 40 yards off), and
jumped into the water as he was. The boy was sinking for
the third time, when Robinson seized him round the waist
and swam with him to the breastwork. He then handed
him up to some of the spectators, who pulled him up on the
breastwork again. Awarded a bronze medal.
JOHN HARVEY (aged twenty-one years), a butcher, residing
at New Plymouth, Taranaki, New Zealand, rescued John
McGiven, a child aged three and a half years, from drowning
at New Plymouth on the 8th May, 1888. Harvey swam
about 30 yards, to where the boy was sinking, caught him
by the arm, and swam ashore with him, thereby saving his
life. Awarded a certificate of merit.
WILLIAM MCKENZIE COMMONS (aged thirty-two years), a
shipping agent, rescued a child named King from drowning at
Tauranga Harbour, Auckland, on the 11th July, 1888. Mr.
Commons very promptly entered the water without removing
his clothes, swam to the place where the boy had twice
sunk, and after some little delay managed to catch hold of
him. There was a strong current running, so that Mr.
Commons could not regain the wharf, and was being swept
up the harbour when a rope was thrown from the steam-
launch "Result," by means of which he placed the boy on
board that vessel. The weather was very cold. Awarded a
bronze medal.
HENRY MITCHELL and LAWSON ROBINS, seamen of barque
"Cormorant," rescued Robert Percy Graham from drowning
at Lyttelton on the 8th November, 1888. Mitchell was on the
ship's deck and heard the cries for help, and on looking over
saw that Graham was in trouble. He immediately jumped
overboard, and, after a great struggle, had to leave Graham
to save himself, when Robins jumped into the water and
swam to Graham, and swam with him to where a rope was
lowered. Each awarded a certificate of merit.
GEORGE S. BULLEN (aged thirteen years), residing at
Thames, rescued Gordon Lamb, aged seven years, from
drowning in the River Thames. Upon seeing the boy fall off
the wharf, Bullen, without any hesitation, jumped after him
without removing any of his clothing; when he reached the
boy he got him by the arm and held him at arm's length,
and swam with him to the nearest landing-steps; a strong
ebb tide was running at the time. Awarded a bronze medal.
ARTHUR HOLBERTON MILES BRATHWAITE, of Hastings,
Hawke's Bay, New Zealand (aged thirteen years), a school-
boy. Mr. W. Rainbow, head-master of the Heretaunga
School, near Hastings, having taken a number of boys to
bathe at the mouth of a creek running into the Nagaruroro,
the largest river in Hawke's Bay, George Cotterill, aged nine
years, one of the number, was drawn by the current into the
river itself, about 10ft. deep at this place, had sunk once,
when Brathwaite swam in to his assistance, but was clutched
round the neck by Cotterill; he dived and succeeded in get-
ting clear of the drowning boy, who came to the surface;
Brathwaite then seized him by the wrist and swam with
him to a snag which was projecting from the water some
distance away, and held him upon it until some Natives
came with a canoe and took them off. Mr. Rainbow also
went in to try and save the boy, but, being unable to swim,
was drowned. Awarded a bronze medal.
HERBERT HYAM DE COSTA (aged fourteen years), rescued
Hannah Kennedy, aged eight years, from drowning at Gis-
borne, New Zealand, on the 9th February, 1889. While
some little girls were bathing in the river, one Hannah
Kennedy got beyond her depth and was carried away by the
current. She could not swim, and was in great danger of
drowning. Herbert Hyam de Costa, who was about 100 yards
away, heard her cries of distress, and immediately ran up to
the spot. By this time the girl had gone under two or three
times. He plunged in, and after a hard struggle, owing to
the girl clinging to him and stopping his progress, he suc-
ceeded in bringing her safely to land, both being thoroughly
exhausted, especially the boy. Awarded a certificate of
merit.
OLE ANTHON BERNTSEN (aged thirty-five years), a seaman,
with JOHN ULLANDER, rescued John Ammunson, aged
twenty-six years, from drowning, who was clinging to a cap-
sized boat in the breakers at Waitara, New Zealand, on the
10th February, 1889. Awarded a certificate of merit.
JOHN ULLANDER (aged thirty-six years), a seaman, with
ANTHON BERNTSEN, rescued John Ammunson, aged twenty-
six years, from drowning, who was clinging to a capsized boat
in the breakers at Waitara, New Zealand, on the 10th Feb-
ruary, 1889. Awarded a certificate of merit.
