Notice of Hearing of Applications for Patents.

Patent Office,
Wellington, 31st July, 1889.

No. 3822.-WILLIAM WHIDDEN HOLFORD, of Picton,
Marlborough, New Zealand, Engineer, has deposited
at this office a specification of an invention for an improved
method of dressing New Zealand flax (Phormium tenax) or
other fibrous substances.

No. 3824.-RICHARD CARNALL, of Dunedin, Otago, New
Zealand, Commission Agent, has deposited at this office a
specification of an invention for a side-fastening shirt.

No. 3825.-WILLIAM MCKEGAN, of Wellington, New Zea-
land, Mechanical Engineer, has deposited at this office a
specification of an invention for an improved automatic feed-
ing, scraping, and washing flax-machine.

No. 3827.-THOMAS LEWIS, of Rangitata, Geraldine, New
Zealand, Railway Officer, has deposited at this office a
specification of an invention for the better and more expedi-
tious method of date-stamping and printing letters, tickets,
and other things, to be called "Lewis's Patent Printing
Type."

No. 3828.-JOHN HANDLEY KNIBBS, of Sydney, New South
Wales, Gentleman, has deposited at this office a specification
of an invention for an improved fire-escape.

No. 3829.-JOHN MCGREGOR, of Roslyn, Otago, New Zea-
land, Photographer, has deposited at this office a specifica-
tion of an invention for an enamel for coating wood for pre-
serving butter for export or for keeping.

And I have appointed Thursday, the 17th day of October
next, at 11 o'clock in the forenoon, at this office, to hear
the said applications and all objections thereto; and I require
all persons having an interest in opposing the grant of any
such Letters Patent to leave, on or before the 2nd day of
October next, at this office, particulars in writing of their
objections to any of the said applications, otherwise they will
be precluded from urging the same.

fern, near Sydney, New South Wales, Carriage
Builder, THOMAS HODGES JONES, of Russell Street, Bur-
wood, near Sydney, aforesaid, Writing Clerk, and JOSEPH
CARTER OAKMAN, of No. 17, O'Connell Street, Sydney, afore-
said, Merchant, have deposited at this office a specification
of an invention for an improved combined railway-buffer
and automatic coupling.

And I have appointed Friday, the 28th day of March
next, at 11 o'clock in the forenoon, at this office, to hear
the said application and all objections thereto; and I re-
quire all persons having an interest in opposing the grant
of such Letters Patent to leave, on or before the 13th day
of March next, at this office, particulars in writing of
their objections to the said application, otherwise they will
be precluded from urging the same.

Civil Service Senior Examination.

Education Department,
Wellington, 22nd October, 1888.

IN pursuance of regulations under "The Civil Service
Reform Act, 1886," notice is hereby given that for the
Senior Examination of January, 1890, the period of litera-
ture will be the latter half of the Eighteenth Century, and
the special books will be Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice,
and Goldsmith's Vicar of Wakefield.
