Description of Land: These sections form part of the
original Masterton-Mangahao Special-settlement Block, and
comprise generally hilly and undulating country, with flats
in places. The forest is of mixed character, tolerably heavy,
and the undergrowth is, as a rule, dense; the trees include
rata, rimu, tawa, pukatea, rewarewa, hinau, miro, matai,
and occasional totara; the scrub, supplejack, karamu, ma-
hoe, pungas, &c. The soil is generally of good quality, rest-
ing on limestone and papa. The sections form a block about
three miles long and two and a quarter miles broad, running
north-east and south-west. Its south-eastern side is about
sixty chains distant from the Mangahao River, or about five
miles from Pahiatua, of which about four and a quarter
miles are formed into a good dray-road. Its north-western
side is on the slopes of the Tararua Range, and about ten
miles from Palmerston by road, of which distance about six
miles are already formed. The proposed Palmerston-Pahia-
tua Road intersects the block, and there is also a through
road leading to Ballance Township. Horse-tracks are already
cleared almost up to the northern and southern boundaries,
and on all sides except the north-western, which is forest
reserve; bush-felling has been done by the settlers on
adjacent lands. The area is fairly well watered, and the
general elevation of the country ranges from 350ft. to 1,000ft.
above sea-level; the climate is mild, the rainfall copious;
under such conditions the land, when cleared, will be well
adapted for agricultural and pastoral pursuits.
Mr. G. T. Murray, Government Surveyor, of Pahiatua, will
arrange to send guides over the block with intending selec-
tors, if not less than three in number. The block can be
easily visited in a day from Pahiatua.
