T is hereby notified, for public information, that the Hon.
Commissioner of Trade and Customs has decided to
interpret "The Customs and Excise Duties Act, 1888," in
relation to the under-mentioned articles as follow:-
NOTE. "Not otherwise enumerated" appears as n.o.e.; "other
kinds" as o.k. Articles marked thus * are revised decisions.

Notice of Hearing of Applications for Patents.

N O. 3724. - JAMES ALBERT HAMILTON, of Wellington,
New Zealand, Carpenter, has deposited at this office
a specification of an invention for feeding the scutchers used
for scutching New Zealand flax or Phormium tenax, to be
called "Hamilton's Scutcher-feeder."
No. 3725. - SIDNEY PERCIVAL EVANS, of Wynyard Street,
Auckland, New Zealand, Engineer, has deposited at this
office a specification of an invention for relieving the slide-
valve of locomotive, marine, and stationery engines from
steam pressure, and for dispensing with the necessity of stuf-
fing-boxes and packing, to be called "Evans's Patent Equi-
librium Slide-valve."
No. 3726. - THOMAS HENRY DAVIDSON, of Dunedin, New
Zealand, Engineer, has deposited at this office a specification
of an invention for improvements in a machine for flax-
dressing, known as "The Premier Flax-dresser," in respect of
which an application No. 3369 for Letters Patent was made
by him and one George William Gough on the 8th day of
November, 1888.
No. 3727. - GEORGE ALLEN, of Auckland, New Zealand,
Saddler, has deposited at this office a specification of an
invention for a saddle-tree, to be called "Allen's Patent
Paragon Saddle-tree."
No. 3729. - HOLMES SAMUEL CHIPMAN, of Sydney, New
South Wales, Merchant, has deposited at this office a speci-
fication of an invention for improvements in the treatment
of refined sugar-masse and sugar.
No. 3730. - PIERRE CHEASEMAN DU BOIS, of Sydney, New
South Wales, Metallurgist, has deposited at this office a
specification of an invention for improvements in stamp
batteries (being a communication from abroad by Martin P.
Boss, of San Francisco, California, United States of America,
Engineer).
And I have appointed Thursday, the 15th day of August
next, at 11 o'clock in the forenoon, at this office, to hear the
said applications and all objections thereto; and I require
all persons having an interest in opposing the grant of any
such Letters Patent to leave, on or before the 31st day of
July next, at this office, particulars in writing of their
objections to any of the said applications, otherwise they
will be precluded from urging the same.

No. 3732. - THOMAS EVANS, of Oakleigh, near Melbourne,
Victoria, Engine-driver, has deposited at this office a speci-
fication of an invention for the speedy opening and closing of
the trap-doors in the bottom of ballast-trucks, to be entitled
"The Self-adjusting Trap-gear."
No. 3733. - ARTHUR CHAYTOR, of Nelson, New Zealand,
Gentleman, and ROBERT WOOLLEY GIBBS, of the same place,
Cordage-factor, have deposited at this office a specification of
an invention for an improved flax-dressing machine.
No. 3734. - JOHN LAIRD MORRISON, of Wellington, New
Zealand, Ropemaker, has deposited at this office a specifica-
tion for an invention for Morrison's revolving hackling and
scutching machine.
No. 3735. - THOR WESTRING, of 175, William Street, Mel-
bourne, Victoria, Gentleman, has deposited at this office a
specification of an invention for an artificial ear-drum or
instrument for the relief of deafness (being a communica-
tion from John Henry Nicholson, of New York, United
States of America, Publisher).
And I have appointed Friday, the 16th day of August
next, at 11 o'clock in the forenoon, at this office, to hear the
said applications and all objections thereto; and I require all
persons having an interest in opposing the grant of any such
Letters Patent to leave, on or before the 1st day of August
next, at this office, particulars in writing of their objections
to any of the said applications, otherwise they will be pre-
cluded from urging the same.

in lock-nuts.
And I have appointed Friday, the 28th day of March
next, at 11 o'clock in the forenoon, at this office, to hear
the said applications and all objections thereto; and I
require all persons having an interest in opposing the grant
of any such Letters Patent to leave, on or before the 13th day
of March next, at this office, particulars in writing of their
objections to any of the said applications, otherwise they
will be precluded from urging the same.

Civil Service Senior Examination.
Education Department,
Wellington, 22nd October, 1888.
N pursuance of regulations under "The Civil Service
Reform Act, 1886," notice is hereby given that for the
Senior Examination of January, 1890, the period of litera-
ture will be the latter half of the Eighteenth Century, and
the special books will be Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice,
and Goldsmith's Vicar of Wakefield.
