THE several parcels of land mentioned in list hereunder:—

Given under the hand of His Excellency Sir William Francis Drummond Jervois, Lieutenant-General in Her Majesty's Army, Knight Grand Cross of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George, Companion of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, Governor and Commander-in-Chief in and over Her Majesty's Colony of New Zealand and its Dependencies, and Vice-Admiral of the same; and issued under the Seal of the said Colony, at the Government House, at Wellington, this twelfth day of January, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eighty-nine.

A PROCLAMATION.

IN pursuance of the powers and authorities conferred upon me by the one hundred and sixty-second section of “The Land Act, 1885,” I, William Francis Drummond Jervois, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, do hereby proclaim and declare that the blocks of land described in the Schedule hereto shall be and the same are hereby set apart and declared open for the Parkville, Awahou-Pohangina, Masterton-Hawera, Woodville-Mangatainoka, Masterton-Mangahao, and Wellington Special Settlements, upon the terms and conditions fixed by an Order in Council issued on the fifth day of December, one thousand eight hundred and eighty-five, and made under the one hundred and sixty-third section of the said Act.

SCHEDULE.

PARKVILLE SPECIAL SETTLEMENT.

ALL that piece or parcel of land containing by admeasurement 6,006 acres, more or less, situate in Blocks V. and IX., Mangaone, and VII. and X., Tararua Survey District. Bounded towards the north by the Wellington Special Settlement No. 1, about 277 chains; towards the east by the Makakahi River, about 485 chains; towards the south by the Wellington Special Settlement No. 2, about 242 chains; and towards the west by Crown lands, about 203 chains.

AWAHOU-POHANGINA SPECIAL SETTLEMENT.

All that piece or parcel of land containing by admeasurement 7,100 acres, more or less, situate in Blocks X., XI., and XIV., Pohangina Survey District. Bounded towards the north by a creek forming the northern boundary of Section No. 47, Block X., same survey district, about 88 chains; towards the south-east by Crown lands, about 715 chains; towards the south-west by Subdivision X, Manchester Block, about 73 chains; and towards the north-west by the Pohangina River, about 645 chains.

MASTERTON-HAWERA SPECIAL SETTLEMENT.

All that piece or parcel of land containing by admeasurement 3,445 acres, more or less, situate in Blocks X., XIII., and XIV., Mangahao Survey District. Bounded towards the north by the Woodville-Mangatainoka Special Settlement, about 125 chains; towards the east by the Wellington-Woodville Railway and the Mangatainoka J No. 2 Block, about 312 chains; towards the south by the Mangatainoka K No. 2 Block, about 147 chains; and towards the west by the Mangahao River, about 400 chains.

WOODVILLE-MANGATAINOKA SPECIAL SETTLEMENT.

All that piece or parcel of land containing by admeasurement 6,136 acres, more or less, situate in Blocks VII., X., and XI., Mangahao Survey District. Bounded towards the north by the Mangatainoka 2B H No. 1 Block, 477 chains; towards the east by the Mangatainoka and Makakahi Rivers, about 650 chains; towards the south by Crown land, by the Mangatainoka J No. 2 Block, by the Wellington-Woodville Railway, and by the Masterton-Hawera Special Settlement, about 370 chains; and towards the west by the Mangahao River, about 640 chains.

MASTERTON-MANGAHAO SPECIAL SETTLEMENT.

All that piece or parcel of land containing by admeasurement 6,360 acres, more or less, situate in Blocks III. and VII., Mangahao Survey District. Bounded towards the north by Crown lands, about 39 chains; towards the north-east and east by the Manawatu and the Mangahao Rivers, about 1,085 chains; towards the south-west by the Woodville-Mangahao Special Settlement, about 61 chains; and towards the west by Crown lands, about 679 chains.

WELLINGTON SPECIAL SETTLEMENT.

All those two pieces or parcels of land containing by admeasurement in the aggregate 11,113 acres, more or less, situate in Blocks I. and V., Mangaone Survey District, and Block VII., Tararua Survey District. Bounded towards the north by Crown lands and the Hutt Special Settlement, about 252 chains; towards the east by the Makakahi River, about 440 chains; towards the south by the Parkville Special Settlement and Crown lands, about 374 chains; and towards the west by the Mangatainoka River, about 445 chains.

Also all that piece or parcel of land situate in Block X., Tararua Survey District, and Block IX., Mangaone Survey District. Bounded towards the north by the Parkville Special Settlement, about 239 chains; towards the east by the Makakahi River, about 200 chains; towards the south by the Makakahi River, about 192 chains; and towards the west by Crown lands, about 144 chains.

As to Recruiting for the Permanent Forces.

A PROCLAMATION.

UNDER “THE DEFENCE ACT, 1886.”

THE Proclamation published in Gazette No. 17, of the eighteenth day of March, one thousand eight hundred and eighty-seven, relative to recruiting for the Permanent Forces, is hereby cancelled, and the following substituted in lieu thereof:—

Recruits for the Artillery and Torpedo Corps, with the exception of special artificers, engineers, electricians, tradesmen, or men who have served in Her Majesty’s naval, military, or colonial forces, shall be selected from the members of the Volunteer force who are under twenty-eight years of age, and have at least one year’s efficient service at the time of making their application.

The following regulations are published for the guidance of applicants desirous of entering the Permanent Militia:—

Applicants for appointments to the Permanent Militia will send in their applications to, and wait on, the Officer Commanding Permanent Militia at Dunedin, Lyttelton, Wellington, or Auckland, with their addresses, ages, medical certificates of fitness, and certificates of character, one of which must be from the Commanding Officer of the corps in which they are serving.

As vacancies arise, appointments will be made from the list of applicants. On being informed that he has been appointed, the candidate will report himself for enrolment at Mount Cook Barracks, Wellington, within twenty-one days, otherwise the vacancy will be offered to the next on the list, and he will be held to have forfeited his appointment, unless in case of certified sickness, when he may be replaced at the head of the list within three months if then fit for service.

The minimum height for the Artillery is 5ft. 9in.
The minimum height for the Torpedo is 5ft. 6in.
