Alteration in the Scale of Fares, Rates, and Charges in
force on the New Zealand Railways.

THE New Zealand Railway Commissioners, in pur-
suance of the powers conferred by "The Government
Railways Act, 1887," do hereby make the following altera-
tion in the scale of fares, rates, and charges on the New
Zealand railways:----

To come into force on and after the 15th March, 1889,-

PART II.-LUGGAGE, PARCELS, ETC.
The milk-rate for distances over 30 miles is hereby
amended: For each additional 30 miles or fraction thereof
đ. per gallon will be charged.

To come into force on and after the 25th March, 1889,-

Reward of £10,000 offered for the Discovery of New Gold
fields. Amended Conditions.

Mines Department,
Wellington, 30th April, 1888.

REWARDS of £10,000 are offered for the discovery of new
goldfields, upon the amended conditions set forth
hereunder.

AMENDED CONDITIONS.

  1. The maximum sum offered as a reward for any proved
    discovery of a new goldfield in accordance with these condi-
    tions is £5,000 for the North Island, and £5,000 for the
    Middle Island.

  2. The newly-discovered goldfield must be situated not
    less than forty miles from any existing goldfield or any
    existing workings.

  3. No reward shall be payable until 50,000 ounces of gold
    have been produced from the newly-discovered goldfield
    within three years from the date of its being registered.

  4. Any person discovering new gold-workings, and being
    desirous of obtaining the reward, shall immediately forward
    a written report of such discovery, with full particulars, to
    the Warden or Resident Magistrate of the district within

which such discovery shall be situated, and the Warden or
Resident Magistrate shall forthwith register the report as an
application for reward.

  1. No prospecting will be allowed upon Native land with-
    out a prospecting license authorising the person therein
    named, with the consent of the owner of the land, to prospect,
    in accordance with the provisions of sections one hundred
    and thirty-five to one hundred and thirty-seven of "The
    Mining Act, 1886," inclusive.

No reward shall be paid for any discovery that may be
made upon Native land without the consent of the Native
owners and the approval of the Minister of Mines.

Notice of Hearing of Application for a Patent.

Wellington, 9th March, 1889.

NO. 3584.-EDWARD WATERS, of No. 131, William Street,
Melbourne, Victoria, Patent Agent, has deposited at
this office a specification of an invention for improvements in
sheaf-carriers (being a communication from abroad by the
McCormick Harvesting Machine Company, of Chicago, in
the United States of America).

And I have appointed Wednesday, the 12th day of June
next, at 11 o'clock in the forenoon, at this office, to hear the
said application and all objections thereto; and I require
all persons having an interest in opposing the grant of
such Letters Patent to leave, on or before the 28th day of
May next, at this office, particulars in writing of their
objections to the said application, otherwise they will be
precluded from urging the same.

Timaru, Canterbury, New Zealand, Engineer, has
deposited at this office a specification of an invention for the
cure of nervous disorders by means of electricity in the form
of a pill, to be called "An Electric Pill."

No. 3586.-EDWARD GOODWIN, of Pigeon Bay, Canterbury,
New Zealand, Farmer, has deposited at this office a specifi-
cation of an invention for a double-action windlass.

No. 3587.-WILLIAM CHARLES ALFRED DIMOCK, of 4,
Lambton Quay, Wellington, New Zealand, has deposited at
this office a specification of an invention for improvements in
curing and preserving bacon and meat.

No. 3588.-WALTER NORGROVE, of Wellington, New Zea-
land, has deposited at this office a specification of an
invention for scutching and cleaning flax, entitled "The
Anti-friction Scutcher and Cleaner."

And I have appointed Wednesday, the 12th day of June
next, at 11 o'clock in the forenoon, at this office, to hear the
said applications and all objections thereto; and I require all
persons having an interest in opposing the grant of any such
Letters Patent to leave, on or before the 28th day of May
