Description of Land.—The land is excellent pastoral country. The carrying capacity of the land when cleared and grassed, judging from the results obtained by the settlers on the adjoining bush lands, is three cross-bred sheep to an acre. The formation is a limestone and marl (papa). The bush is mixed, generally of a light description. The main line of road, now in course of formation from the sea-coast at Wainui, connecting with the Napier–Wellington Railway at Tahoraite, runs through the centre of the Tautane Block. The shipping-place for the district, at which the small coastal steamers call, is at Cape Turnagain.

Description of Land.—All forest land, containing a good deal of red-pine and other useful timber; undulating and hilly, with good water-supply generally. The soil is generally very good. The back sections are chiefly adapted for pasture, being hilly bush land with clay soil. Access is given through the Makaretu Settlement, and 14 miles of roads have been cleared and stumped through the block.

Description of Land.—Hilly land, partly covered with bush and scrub. The higher hills are limestone, on the rest the soil is mixed with pumice. Accessible by roads which have been partly formed; about 2½ miles through the bush have been cleared of timber 1 chain in width. The Hawke’s Bay County Council has formed a line of road giving access to these lands from the Patea Road, a distance of about 7 miles from Tunanui. There is another dray-road via Puketapu and Rissington. The distance from Napier is about 40 miles by road. The bush contains rimu, matai, and white-pine.

Description of Land.—These lands are situated on the formed road from Gisborne to Wairoa, the Village of Tiniroto being about 24 miles south-west from Gisborne. The smaller sections, under 200 acres, are agricultural, the others agricultural and pastoral, consisting of broken ranges, covered with fern and tutu, with a little grass. Patches of bush exist in most of the gullies, the timber being mixed, but with some totara and rimu. The soil is light, resting on marl and sandstone.

Description of Land.—These lands are situated about 15 miles from Gisborne, on the formed main road to Wairoa, and on that leading to the Hangaroa Village-site. The surface-soil is light, resting on marl. The country is a good deal broken, but with small flats on most of the sections. The vegetation consists of fern, tutu, and flax, and a little grass, with patches of mixed bush in the gullies.

Description of Land.—These lands are 18 miles north of Gisborne, by a formed road. The general nature of the surface is broken, but with numerous flats suitable for homestead and agricultural purposes. The vegetation is fern, tutu, and other scrub, with a good deal of grass in places. The forest found in most of the gullies is mixed, but with some totara, matai, and other fencing timbers. The soil is generally good.

Description of Land.—The sections in Blocks IX., X., XIII., Mangaone, are situated between Hastwell’s Clearing, the Mangaone Settlements, and Eketahuna, eastward of the Masterton–Woodville Main Road. The Wiwaka Section of the Masterton–Woodville Railway intersects the block, and is now under construction, the line having already been opened to Mangamahoe, which is about 3 miles from the block. The country comprises undulating and rough hills, with flats on some sections. The bush consists generally of rata, rimu, tawa, kahikatea, hinau, tawhero, &c., and the usual variety of undergrowth; the soil varies from fair to good, the formation being sandstone, papa, &c. As a rule the sections are fairly well watered.
