The carrying capacity of the land when cleared and grassed, judging from the results obtained by the settlers on the adjoining bush lands, is three cross-bred sheep to an acre. The formation is a limestone and marl (papa). The bush is mixed, generally of a light description. The main line of road, now in course of formation from the sea-coast at Wainui, connecting with the Napier-Wellington Railway at Tahoraite, runs through the centre of the Tautane Block. The shipping-place for the district, at which the small coastal steamers call, is at Cape Turnagain.

Description of Land.—The land in Blocks I. and II., Ruataniwha, is situated between the Tukituki and Waipawa Rivers; it is covered with forest, portions when cleared being suitable for agriculture. The rest is pastoral land. The main road through the blocks has been cleared of bush; one connecting the two rivers has been formed for horse-traffic, and gives access to most of the sections. Drays can be taken along the river-beds to both north and south sides of the block, which is about sixty miles from Napier, and twenty miles from the railway-line at Waipawa.

The Hawke’s Bay County Council has formed a line of road giving access to these lands from the Patea Road, a distance of about 7 miles from Tunanui. There is another dray-road via Puketapu and Rissington. The distance from Napier is about 40 miles by road. The bush contains rimu, matai, and white-pine.
