bend in the West Channel, to be removed, and a gas buoy
substituted therefor. Such buoy will exhibit a white light,
elevated 10ft. above the level of the sea, visible in clear
weather five miles distant.

PORT PHILLIP BAY.—WEST CHANNEL.
Pilots, masters of vessels, and others are hereby notified
that a shoal indicating 11ft. at low water has formed on the
west of the West Channel, at the entrance to Swan Bay,
distant about two and a half cables S.S.W. ½ W. from No. 3
buoy.

Until further notice the position of the south end of such
shoal will be marked by a black 300-gallon cask buoy, which
has been anchored in 14ft. low water.

QUARANTINE CATTLE JETTY.
Pilots, masters of vessels, and others are hereby informed
that a 300-gallon iron cask mooring buoy, painted red, has
been anchored in 7 fathoms water, 60 fathoms from the end
of the Quarantine Cattle Jetty, and in line therewith.

ALTONA JETTY.
Pilots, masters of vessels, and others are hereby informed
that a white 200-gallon cask buoy has been anchored in 12ft.
water, two cables easterly from the end of Altona Jetty.

Masters and others, when approaching the jetty, should
keep such buoy on the starboard side.

Notice of Intention to take Land for the Construction of
Defence Works at Ocean Beach, Dunedin.

NOTICE is hereby given that it is proposed, under the
provisions of “The Public Works Act, 1882,” and
“The Public Works Act 1882 Amendment Act, 1885,” to exe-
cute a certain public work, to wit, the construction of works,
for the purpose of defence, at Ocean Beach, Dunedin, and for
the purposes of such public work the land described in the
Schedule hereto is required to be taken; and notice is
further given that the plan of the said work and of the
land so required to be taken is deposited in the Public
Works Office at Dunedin, and is there open for inspec-
tion. And notice is hereby given that all persons affected by
the execution of the said public work or by the taking of the
said land shall, if they have any well-grounded objections to
the execution of the said public work or to the taking of such
land, set forth the same in writing, and send such writing,
within forty days from the first publication of this notice,
to the Minister for Public Works, Wellington.

Civil Service Senior Examination.

Education Department,

IN pursuance of regulations under “The Civil Service
Reform Act, 1886,” notice is hereby given that for the
Senior Examination of January, 1890, the period of litera-
ture will be the latter half of the Eighteenth Century, and
the special books will be Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice,
and Goldsmith’s Vicar of Wakefield.

Alterations in the Scale of Charges in force on the New
Zealand Railways.

I, EDWIN MITCHELSON, the Minister for Public Works, in
pursuance of the powers conferred on me by section 144
of “The Public Works Act, 1882,” and all other powers in
anywise enabling me in that behalf, do hereby make the
following alterations in the scale of fares, rates, and charges
on the New Zealand Railways :—

REGULATIONS.

(3.) Class E.—Grain and other agricultural produce.
The general regulation published in the New Zealand
Gazette No. 58, of the 25th October, 1888, is hereby cancelled,
and the general regulations applicable to goods of Class E,
published in the Supplement to the New Zealand Gazette
No. 7, of the 27th January, 1888, are hereby declared to re-
main in force until further notice.

November, one thousand eight hundred and
eighty-eight.

Reward of £10,000 offered for the Discovery of New Gold
fields.—Amended Conditions.

Mines Department,
Wellington, 30th April, 1888.

REWARDS of £10,000 are offered for the discovery of new
goldfields, upon the amended conditions set forth
hereunder.

AMENDED CONDITIONS.

  1. The maximum sum offered as a reward for any proved
    discovery of a new goldfield in accordance with these condi-
    tions is £5,000 for the North Island, and £5,000 for the
    Middle Island.

  2. The newly-discovered goldfield must be situated not
    less than forty miles from any existing goldfield or any
    existing workings.

  3. No reward shall be payable until 50,000 ounces of gold
    have been produced from the newly-discovered goldfield
    within three years from the date of its being registered.

  4. Any person discovering new gold-workings, and being
    desirous of obtaining the reward, shall immediately forward
    a written report of such discovery, with full particulars, to
    the Warden or Resident Magistrate of the district within
    which such discovery shall be situated, and the Warden or
    Resident Magistrate shall forthwith register the report as an
    application for reward.

  5. No prospecting will be allowed upon Native land with-
    out a prospecting license authorising the person therein
    named, with the consent of the owner of the land, to prospect,
    in accordance with the provisions of sections one hundred
    and thirty-five to one hundred and thirty-seven of “The
    Mining Act, 1886,” inclusive.

No reward shall be paid for any discovery that may be
made upon Native land without the consent of the Native
owners and the approval of the Minister of Mines.

Property-tax.—“Property Assessment Act, 1885,” and its
Amendments.

IN accordance with the above Acts, public notice is hereby
given that the thirtieth day of November next is the
time, and my office, Government Buildings, Wellington, is
the place, at which all persons in the colony are required to
furnish statements of all real and personal property belong-
ing to them in accordance with the said Acts.

N.B.—Forms of statement will be delivered by Assessors
as far as practicable, but, as the duty of procuring such
forms is cast upon the public, no person is excused from
neglecting to provide himself therewith. All persons, whether
liable to taxation or not, are required to furnish state-

Money Order Post Office.
