stamped.

THE Colonial Treasurer directs it to be notified for
general information that orders for the payment of
moneys to agents by cheque or otherwise are subject to a
stamp duty of one penny under the provisions of "The
Stamp Act, 1882," and all public officers concerned in the
payment of public moneys are hereby enjoined, on presenta-
tion of such orders and before payment, to see that they are
duly stamped as required by law, unless where specially
exempt.

Civil Service Senior Examination.

IN pursuance of regulations under "The Civil Service
Reform Act, 1886," notice is hereby given that for the
Senior Examination of January, 1889, the period of litera-
ture will be the age of Queen Anne, and the special books
will be Shakespeare's Henry IV. and Henry V., and Lamb's
Essays of Elia.

the 31st day of October. Forms of notice can be
obtained on application to the Inspector-General of Schools,
Wellington, or to the Secretary of any Education Board.

Te Makarini Scholarships.
THREE scholarships of the yearly value of £35, tenable
for two years, are offered for competition. One of
these scholarships is open to all Maoris that have attended a
Native school during the previous year, and are under sixteen
years of age at the end of the month preceding the date of
the examination; the other two scholarships are open to all
Maoris that are under fifteen years of age at the end of the
month preceding the date of the examination, and that have
attended a Native village school for the previous twelve
months. These scholarships are offered for competition to
Maori youths, on the conditions laid down in the regulations
of the Trustees of the Te Makarini Scholarships Fund, as
printed in the Native Schools Code, 1886, and in the supple-
mentary regulations sent out to all teachers in May of the
current year. The examination will be held at convenient
centres on the 17th and 18th December, 1888.
Candidates must, either directly or through their teachers,
send notice to the Inspector of Native Schools, Education
Department, Wellington, of their intention to present them-
selves for examination. Such notice must be posted not
later than the 31st October next.
Copies of the regulations and forms of notice may be
obtained from teachers of Native schools and boarding insti-
tutions, the Secretaries to Education Boards, or the Secre-
tary to the Education Department.

IN accordance with the above Acts, public notice is hereby
given that the thirtieth day of November next is the
time, and my office, Government Buildings, Wellington, is
the place, at which all persons in the colony are required to
furnish statements of all real and personal property belong-
ing to them in accordance with the said Acts.

as far as practicable, but, as the duty of procuring such
forms is cast upon the public, no person is excused from
neglecting to provide himself therewith. All persons, whether

Notice to Committees of Public Libraries.

SIR WALTER BULLER'S new and enlarged edition of
his "History of the Birds of New Zealand" is being
issued to subscribers, in thirteen parts, at one guinea a
part, or twelve guineas for the whole, if paid in advance.
The author, in writing to the Government, says, "As I
should like to see this book in every public library in the
colony, I have decided to make the Government the follow-
ing offer: To deliver any number of copies that may be
required for that purpose, up to twenty-five, at the original
price of £10 10s. for the two volumes, and to have them
suitably bound at my own expense."
Any Public Library Committee desiring to obtain a copy
of the work on the special terms thus offered may apply to
me by letter officially signed by the Chairman, Treasurer, or
Secretary. If the number of applications exceeds twenty-
five, the twenty-five first received will be entered in a list to
be sent to the author, who will send the books to the care of
the Education Department, to be delivered as payment is
made for the several copies. Should the applications not
exceed the limit of twenty-five, all applicants will be entitled
to receive copies at £10 10s.

Street, Sydney, New South Wales, Merchant, has deposited
at this office a specification of an invention for improve-
ments in harvesting machines (being a communication from
the inventor, Lewis Miller, of Akron, Ohio, United States of
America).

Zealand, CHARLES WHEELER MOUNTFORT, of the same place,
Engineer, and CHARLES ADNAM MOUNTFORT, of the same
place, Surveyor, have deposited at this office a specification
of an invention for an improvement in a brake for vehicles,
