Reward of £10,000 offered for the Discovery of New Gold
fields.—Amended Conditions.

REWARDS of £10,000 are offered for the discovery of new
goldfields, upon the amended conditions set forth

AMENDED CONDITIONS.

The maximum sum offered as a reward for any proved
discovery of a new goldfield in accordance with these condi-
tions is £5,000 for the North Island, and £5,000 for the
Middle Island. -
The newly-discovered goldfield must be situated not
less than forty miles from any existing goldfield or any
existing workings. -
No reward shall be payable until 50,000 ounces of gold
have been produced from the newly-discovered goldfield
within three years from the date of its being registered. -
Any person discovering new gold-workings, and being
desirous of obtaining the reward, shall immediately forward
a written report of such discovery, with full particulars, to
the Warden or Resident Magistrate of the district within
which such discovery shall be situated, and the Warden or
Resident Magistrate shall forthwith register the report as an
application for reward. -
No prospecting will be allowed upon Native land with-
out a prospecting license authorising the person therein
named, with the consent of the owner of the land, to prospect,
in accordance with the provisions of sections one hundred
and thirty-five to one hundred and thirty-seven of "The
Mining Act, 1886," inclusive.
No reward shall be paid for any discovery that may be
made upon Native land without the consent of the Native
owners and the approval of the Minister of Mines.
Civil Service Senior Examination.

IN pursuance of regulations under "The Civil Service
Reform Act, 1886," notice is hereby given that for the
Senior Examination of January, 1889, the period of litera-
ture will be the age of Queen Anne, and the special books
will be Shakespeare's Henry IV. and Henry V., and Lamb's
Essays of Elia.

Examinations for Teachers' Certificates and for the Civil
Service.

CANDIDATES are reminded that their notices are due on
the 31st day of October. Forms of notice can be
obtained on application to the Inspector-General of Schools,
Wellington, or to the Secretary of any Education Board.

Te Makarini Scholarships.
THREE scholarships of the yearly value of £35, tenable
for two years, are offered for competition. One of
these scholarships is open to all Maoris that have attended a
Native school during the previous year, and are under sixteen
years of age at the end of the month preceding the date of
the examination; the other two scholarships are open to all
Maoris that are under fifteen years of age at the end of the
month preceding the date of the examination, and that have
attended a Native village school for the previous twelve
months. These scholarships are offered for competition to
Maori youths, on the conditions laid down in the regulations
of the Trustees of the Te Makarini Scholarships Fund, as
printed in the Native Schools Code, 1886, and in the supple-
mentary regulations sent out to all teachers in May of the
current year. The examination will be held at convenient
centres on the 17th and 18th December, 1888.
Candidates must, either directly or through their teachers,
send notice to the Inspector of Native Schools, Education
Department, Wellington, of their intention to present them-
selves for examination. Such notice must be posted not
later than the 31st October next.
Copies of the regulations and forms of notice may be
obtained from teachers of Native schools and boarding insti-
tutions, the Secretaries to Education Boards, or the Secre-
tary to the Education Department.

Property-tax.—"Property Assessment Act, 1885," and its
Amendments.

IN accordance with the above Acts, public notice is hereby
given that the thirtieth day of November next is the
time, and my office, Government Buildings, Wellington, is
the place, at which all persons in the colony are required to
furnish statements of all real and personal property belong-
ing to them in accordance with the said Acts.

N.B.—Forms of statement will be delivered by Assessors
as far as practicable, but, as the duty of procuring such
forms is cast upon the public, no person is excused from
neglecting to provide himself therewith. All persons, whether
liable to taxation or not, are required to furnished state-

Forms may be obtained from the Local Assessor, or at any
Money Order Post Office.
Notice of Hearing of Applications for Patents.

NO. 3281.—HUGH McLEAN, of Hawke's Bay, New Zea-
land, Farmer, has deposited at this office a specifica-
tion of an invention for improvements in clippers for clipping
the hoofs of sheep.
No. 3282.—JAMES HOPKINS STEVENS, of Feilding, New
Zealand, Postmaster, CHARLES WHEELER MOUNTFORT, of
the same place, Engineer, and CHARLES ADNAM MOUNTFORT,
of the same place, Surveyor, have deposited at this office a
specification of an invention for a process of preserving butter
and other alimentary products, to be called "The Cold
Vacuum Process."
No. 3283.—ALFRED UPTON ALCOCK, of Corrs Lane, Mel-
bourne, Victoria, Electrical Engineer, and HENRY GALOPIN,
of Temple Court Place, off Chancery Lane, Melbourne afore-
said, Scientific Engineer, have deposited at this office a speci-
fication of an invention for an automatic compensating-feed
electric-arc lamp.
No. 3284.—HENRY HUGHES, of Wellington, New Zealand,
Engineer and Patent Agent, has deposited at this office a
specification of an invention for an improved ventilating and
cooling apparatus (being a communication from John Smith,
of Melbourne, Victoria).
No. 3285.—ALEXANDER SCOTT, of No. 77, Collins Street
West, Melbourne, Victoria, Aërated-water Manufacturer,
has deposited at this office a specification of an invention
for improvements in the construction of aërated-water
bottles.
No. 3286.—WESLEY SPRAGG, of Auckland, New Zealand,
Manager for New Zealand Dairy Association, has deposited
at this office a specification of an invention for packing
butter, cheese, lard, or any dairy produce with greater safety,
to be called "The New Zealand Dairy Association's Patent
Butter-package."
And I have appointed Friday, the 22nd day of February
next, at 11 o'clock in the forenoon, at this office, to hear
the said applications and all objections thereto; and I require
all persons having an interest in opposing the grant of any
such Letters Patent to leave, on or before the 7th day of
February next, at this office, particulars in writing of their
objections to any of the said applications, otherwise they
will be precluded from urging the same.

Hall McCormick, of Chicago, Illinois, United States of
America).
And I have appointed Wednesday, the 27th day of February
next, at 11 o'clock in the forenoon, at this office, to hear the
said application and all objections thereto; and I require all
persons having an interest in opposing the grant of such
Letters Patent to leave, on or before the 12th day of February
next, at this office, particulars in writing of their objections
to the said application, otherwise they will be precluded from
urging the same.
