AUCKLAND SECTION.
Goods of Classes E and F, hams and bacon in cases, and fungus in bales, ex ship, from Onehunga Wharf to Auckland, will be charged 4s. per ton, including wharfage, receipt from ships in trucks, and cartage delivery at Auckland. Minimum consignment, 50 tons. Charges will be computed according to ship's bill of lading, or by weight or measurement, at the option of the department.

Reward of £10,000 offered for the Discovery of New Gold fields.—Amended Conditions.

REWARDS of £10,000 are offered for the discovery of new goldfields, upon the amended conditions set forth hereunder.

AMENDED CONDITIONS.

The maximum sum offered as a reward for any proved discovery of a new goldfield in accordance with these conditions is £5,000 for the North Island, and £5,000 for the Middle Island.

The newly-discovered goldfield must be situated not less than forty miles from any existing goldfield or any existing workings.

No reward shall be payable until 50,000 ounces of gold have been produced from the newly-discovered goldfield within three years from the date of its being registered.

Any person discovering new gold-workings, and being desirous of obtaining the reward, shall immediately forward a written report of such discovery, with full particulars, to the Warden or Resident Magistrate of the district within which such discovery shall be situated, and the Warden or Resident Magistrate shall forthwith register the report as an application for reward.

No prospecting will be allowed upon Native land without a prospecting license authorising the person therein named, with the consent of the owner of the land, to prospect, in accordance with the provisions of sections one hundred and thirty-five to one hundred and thirty-seven of "The Mining Act, 1886," inclusive.
No reward shall be paid for any discovery that may be made upon Native land without the consent of the Native owners and the approval of the Minister of Mines.
Civil Service Senior Examination.

IN pursuance of regulations under "The Civil Service Reform Act, 1886," notice is hereby given that for the Senior Examination of January, 1889, the period of literature will be the age of Queen Anne, and the special books
will be Shakespeare's Henry IV. and Henry V., and Lamb's Essays of Elia.

Te Makarini Scholarships.
THREE scholarships of the yearly value of £35, tenable for two years, are offered for competition. One of these scholarships is open to all Maoris that have attended a Native school during the previous year, and are under sixteen years of age at the end of the month preceding the date of the examination; the other two scholarships are open to all Maoris that are under fifteen years of age at the end of the month preceding the date of the examination, and that have attended a Native village school for the previous twelve months. These scholarships are offered for competition to Maori youths, on the conditions laid down in the regulations of the Trustees of the Te Makarini Scholarships Fund, as printed in the Native Schools Code, 1886, and in the supplementary regulations sent out to all teachers in May of the current year. The examination will be held at convenient centres on the 17th and 18th December, 1888.
Candidates must, either directly or through their teachers, send notice to the Inspector of Native Schools, Education Department, Wellington, of their intention to present themselves for examination. Such notice must be posted not later than the 31st October next.
Copies of the regulations and forms of notice may be obtained from teachers of Native schools and boarding institutions, the Secretaries to Education Boards, or the Secretary to the Education Department.

No. 3274.—EDWARD HALE GULLIVER, M.A., of Mangare, Auckland, New Zealand, Clerk in Holy Orders, has deposited at this office a specification of an invention for more easily opening boxes, packages, envelopes, &c., to be called "Gulliver's Patent Aperio."
No. 3275.—ROBERT PERCY CHATFIELD and SPENCER DERBY CHATFIELD, of Lower Hepburn Street, Auckland, New Zealand, Clerks, have deposited at this office a specification of an invention for an improved portable cool chamber.
No. 3276.—WILLIAM CARVER, of Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand, Carriage Builder, WILLIAM ROBERT CARVER, of the same place, Carriage-body Maker, and ARTHUR COVERLY CARVER, of the same place, Carriage Painter, have deposited at this office a specification of an invention for a parlour billiard-board.
No. 3277.—ROBERT SKEOCH, of Dunedin, New Zealand, Warehouseman, and DAVID HOPE JOHNSTON, of Wingatui, Otago, New Zealand, Farmer, have deposited at this office a specification of an invention for the deodorisation of night-soil, and the manufacture of artificial manure therefrom, by kiln-drying the said nightsoil and mixing therewith pulverised clay and sawdust.
No. 3278.—ROBERT SKEOCH, of Dunedin, New Zealand, Warehouseman, and DAVID HOPE JOHNSTON, of Wingatui, Otago, New Zealand, Farmer, have deposited at this office a specification of an invention for the deodorisation of night-soil, and the manufacture of artificial manure therefrom, by mixing therewith pulverised scoria.
And I have appointed Thursday, the 21st day of February next, at 11 o'clock in the forenoon, at this office, to hear the said applications and all objections thereto; and I require all persons having an interest in opposing the grant of any such Letters Patent to leave, on or before the 6th day of February next, at this office, particulars in writing of their objections to any of the said applications, otherwise they will be precluded from urging the same.
