Application for Registration of Three Trade Marks.

Colonial Secretary's Office,
Wellington, 9th August, 1888.

NOTICE is hereby given that EDWARD WATERS, Patent
Agent, of Melbourne, in the Colony of Victoria, has
applied, on behalf of the UNION BAG AND PAPER COMPANY, a
corporation existing under and by virtue of the laws of the
State of Illinois, United States of America, and having its
principal place of business in the City of Chicago, in said
State, and engaged in the manufacture and sale of paper
articles and particularly paper-bags, to register, under "The
Trade Marks Act, 1866," the trade marks numbered from
1 to 3, of which the following is a description :β€”

Description of Trade Marks.

No. 1 consists of the symbol "Lion," which may be repre-
sented either by letters forming the word "Lion" or by a
partial or full figure of a lion. The trade mark, as generally
employed, consists of a picture of a lion arranged within a
circle on a red panel on the side of a distended rectangular
paper-bag, illustrated in perspective on a dark background.
Respectively above and below the circle, in large bold type,
appear the words "The Lion Brand" and "Paper Bags."
At the bottom of the circle, and extending diagonally into
the latter, is a small scroll, while slightly to the right of and
below the circle is placed a shield. On the edge of the bag
is the number of bags contained in the package or receptacle
to which the mark is applied, as "500," and below this
number are the words "Square Bags," indicating the
character of the article. The descriptive and other matter,
except the symbolic representation of a lion, may, however,
be varied or omitted at will, or be replaced by other preferred
matter, without altering the character of the trade mark,
the essential feature of which is the symbolic representation
of a lion either by word or picture.

No. 2 consists of the symbol "Kangaroo," which may be
represented either by letters forming the word kangaroo or
by a figure of a kangaroo. The trade mark, as generally
employed, consists of a picture of a kangaroo enclosed within
a circle on a yellow panel arranged on the side of a distended
rectangular paper-bag, illustrated in perspective on a dark
background. Above and below the circle respectively ap-
pear, in large type, the words "The Kangaroo Brand" and
"Paper Bags," while below and slightly to the right of the
circle is placed a small shield. On the edge of the bag is
the number of bags contained in the package or receptacle
to which the mark is applied, as, for instance, "500," and
below the number are the words "Square Bags," indicating
the character of the article. The descriptive and other
matter, except the symbolic representation of the kangaroo,
may, however, be varied or omitted at pleasure, or be replaced
by other preferred matter, without altering the character of
the trade mark, the essential feature of which is the symbolic
representation of a kangaroo either by word or picture.
