Jaluit the Sole Port of Entry for the Marshall Group.

THE following notice, received from the Imperial German Vice-Consul, is published for general information.

IMPERIAL GERMAN PROTECTORATE.—MARSHALL GROUP.

  1. His German Majesty’s Commissioner for the Marshall Islands has received instructions to declare Jaluit the sole port of entry for the German Protectorate of the said islands.
  2. All merchantmen and craft (small) bound for any part of the Marshall Islands from ports beyond have to enter first the Port of Jaluit, and the masters of such vessels or ships have to report to His German Majesty’s Commissioner in Jaluit before calling at any other port of the Protectorate.
  3. Offenders against these regulations are liable to a penalty not exceeding 6,000 marks, equally enforceable upon vessel or cargo, without distinction of the ownership, and in addition the ship or vessel can be legally seized.
  4. Men-of-war are exempt from complying with these regulations.

Revocation of Appointment of Bonding Warehouse.

CUSTOMS.—In exercise of the authority in me for this purpose vested, I, the Commissioner of Trade and Customs, do, by this order under my hand, revoke and annul the appointment of the under-mentioned warehouse for the reception and security of goods entered to be warehoused without payment of duty upon the first entry thereof, namely :—

Port of Invercargill.

The warehouse known as

INSTONE’S BOND,

as appointed and described in Commissioner’s Order No. 230, of the 13th January, 1886.

Approving and appointing a Bonding Warehouse.

CUSTOMS.—In exercise of the powers in me for this purpose vested by “The Customs Laws Consolidation Act, 1882,” I, the Commissioner of Trade and Customs, do hereby approve and appoint the under-mentioned warehouse to be a warehouse for the reception of goods under bond, namely :—

Port of Invercargill.

Portion of a wooden building, roofed with iron, situated on the Railway Reserve, and fronting Liddel Street, to be known as

INSTONE’S BOND.

Commissioner’s Order No. 303.]

Notice to Mariners, No. 11 of 1888.

GREYMOUTH HARBOUR.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 26th June, 1888.

THE Greymouth Harbour Board notify that, in order to prevent collisions occurring on the bar or in the river, masters of vessels are warned not to take the bar inwards when the outer red light is obscured or when a vessel is on the bar.

Alteration in the Scale of Charges in force on the New Zealand Railways.

IN accordance with section 144 of “The Public Works Act, 1882,” I, Edwin Mitchelson, the Minister for Public Works, do hereby make the following alteration in the scale of charges, to come into force from and after the 2nd day of July, 1888 :—

PART IV.—LOCAL RATES.

Stone from Mount Somers quarries, consigned to ship at Lyttelton for foreign export, in consignments not under 30 tons each, will be charged 7s. 6d. per ton or part of a ton.

Civil Service Senior Examination.

IN pursuance of regulations under “The Civil Service Reform Act, 1886,” notice is hereby given that for the Senior Examination of January, 1889, the period of literature will be the age of Queen Anne, and the special books will be Shakespeare’s Henry IV. and Henry V., and Lamb’s Essays of Elia.

Reward of £10,000 offered for the Discovery of New Gold fields.—Amended Conditions.

REWARDS of £10,000 are offered for the discovery of new goldfields, upon the amended conditions set forth hereunder.

AMENDED CONDITIONS.

  1. The maximum sum offered as a reward for any proved discovery of a new goldfield in accordance with these conditions is £5,000 for the North Island, and £5,000 for the Middle Island.
  2. The newly-discovered goldfield must be situated not less than forty miles from any existing goldfield or any existing workings.
  3. No reward shall be payable until 50,000 ounces of gold have been produced from the newly-discovered goldfield within three years from the date of its being registered.
  4. Any person discovering new gold-workings, and being desirous of obtaining the reward, shall immediately forward a written report of such discovery, with full particulars, to the Warden or Resident Magistrate of the district within which such discovery shall be situated, and the Warden or Resident Magistrate shall forthwith register the report as an application for reward.
  5. No prospecting will be allowed upon Native land without a prospecting license authorising the person therein named, with the consent of the owner of the land, to prospect, in accordance with the provisions of sections one hundred and thirty-five to one hundred and thirty-seven of “The Mining Act, 1886,” inclusive.

No reward shall be paid for any discovery that may be made upon Native land without the consent of the Native owners and the approval of the Minister of Mines.

Bonus for Canned and Cured Fish for Export.

Treasury Department,
Wellington, 10th November, 1885.

IT is hereby notified that bonuses under “The Fisheries Encouragement Act, 1885,” as set forth in the following sections (Nos. 8, 9, and 10) of that Act, will be paid subject to the conditions named therein, and in the regulations contained in the Order in Council of even date herewith.

JULIUS VOGEL.

  1. In order to encourage the production and curing of fish for export, the Colonial Treasurer shall during the next seven years after the passing of this Act, without further appropriation by Parliament, pay out of the Consolidated Fund to any person who shall prepare canned and cured fish for export, and actually export the same from the colony, a bonus or bonuses upon the quantity of canned and cured fish prepared and exported by such person as hereinafter mentioned, that is to say,—
    (1.) In respect of the first 200 tons avoirdupois of fish canned with or without oil, the sum of 1d. per pound, the weight of the cans not to be included in the tonnage upon which such bonus is paid ;
    (2.) In respect of every ton avoirdupois of fish canned as aforesaid beyond the first 200 tons, the sum of ½d. per pound, the weight of the cans not to be included in the tonnage upon which such bonus is paid ;
    (3.) In respect to cured fish the bonus to be paid shall be respectively ¼d. and ⅛d. a pound under similar con-
