the Rakaia River to the sea; towards the south-east by the
sea to the mouth of the Opihi River; towards the south-
west by the Opihi River to the main road through Burke's
Pass, and by that road to the source of the Tekapo River;
towards the west by Lake Tekapo and the Godley River to
its source in the Southern Alps; and towards the north-west
by the summit of the Southern Alps to the starting-point.

Timaru Subdivision.

Bounded towards the north-east by the Ashburton Sub-
division, hereinbefore described, from the source of the
Godley River to the sea; towards the east by the sea to the
mouth of the Waitaki River; thence towards the south-west
by the right bank of that river to its confluence with the
Ohau River; thence by the right bank of that river, the
north-eastern shore of Lake Ohau, and the right bank of the
Dobson River to its source in the Southern Alps; and
towards the north-west by the summit of the Southern Alps
to the starting-point.

Given under the hand of His Excellency Sir William
Francis Drummond Jervois, Lieutenant-General
in Her Majesty's Army, Knight Grand Cross of
the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael
and Saint George, Companion of the Most Honour-
able Order of the Bath, Governor and Commander-
in-Chief in and over Her Majesty's Colony of New
Zealand and its Dependencies, and Vice-Admiral
of the same; and issued under the Seal of the
said Colony, at the Government House, at Wel-
ington, this first day of March, in the year of our
Lord one thousand eight hundred and eighty-
eight.

ORDER IN COUNCIL.

At the Government Buildings, at Wellington, this thirteenth
day of February, 1888.

THE HONOURABLE THE PREMIER PRESIDING IN COUNCIL.

In exercise and pursuance of the powers conferred by section
eight of "The Sheep Acts Amendment Act, 1887," and
of all other powers and authorities in anywise enabling me
in this behalf, I, William Francis Drummond Jervois, the
Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, by and with the
advice and consent of the Executive Council of the said
colony, do hereby suspend the operation of sections thirty-five
to thirty-nine, both inclusive, of "The Sheep Act, 1878," in
respect to sheep bred in the colony, and brought by sea from
the ports or places being ports of sheep districts mentioned
in the Schedule hereto, to be landed at other ports within
the colony; and I do hereby declare that such suspension
shall extend to any vessel carrying such sheep in manner
aforesaid.

Principal Secretary of State for the Colonies, is
published for general information.

SIR,—With reference to my circular despatch of the 28th of
October, enclosing a draft of the New Hebrides Convention,
I have the honour to transmit to you copies of the Con-
vention in French and English as actually signed.

MY LORD,—I have the honour to transmit herewith to your
Lordship the New Hebrides Convention, which, under the
authority conveyed in your Lordship's Despatch No. 61,
Treaty, of the 14th instant, I have this day signed with M.
Flourens, in duplicate, one copy remaining in His Excel-
lency's hands.

CONVENTION relative to the New Hebrides, signed at Paris,
16th November, 1887.

THE Government of Her Majesty the Queen of the United
Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and the Government
of the French Republic, being desirous to abrogate the
declaration of the 19th June, 1847, relative to the islands
leeward of Tahiti, and also to make provision for the future
protection of life and property in the New Hebrides, have
agreed upon the following articles:—

ARTICLE I.

The Government of Her Britannic Majesty consent to
proceed to the abrogation of the declaration of 1847 relative
to the islands to the leeward of Tahiti as soon as the agree-
ment hereinafter contained for the future protection of life
and property in the New Hebrides by means of a Joint Com-
mission shall have been carried out.

ARTICLE II.

A Joint Naval Commission shall be immediately consti-
tuted, composed of British and French naval officers on the
Pacific Station, charged with the duty of maintaining order,
and of protecting the lives and property of British subjects
and French citizens in the New Hebrides.

ARTICLE III.

A declaration to that effect shall be signed by the two
Governments.

ARTICLE IV.

The regulations for the guidance of the Commission shall
be drawn up by the two Governments, approved by them,
and transmitted to the Commanders of the British and
French ships on the Pacific Naval Station within a period
not exceeding four months from the date of the signature of
the present Convention, should it be impossible to do so
earlier.

ARTICLE V.

Immediately on the approval of those regulations by the
two Governments, and the consequent withdrawal of the
