Health Statistics and Land Notices

Nov. 26.] THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE. 381

Local Diseases.—The deaths in this class numbered 58 in October against 74 in September. Diseases of the nervous system were less fatal, the deaths having been 13 in October and 19 in September. Diseases of the respiratory system caused 18 deaths in October against 22 in September, and diseases of the digestive system 10 deaths in October against 17 in September. The 58 deaths included 17 of children not exceeding 2 years of age, of which 8 were caused by bronchitis and pneumonia.

Violent Deaths.—Two accidental deaths occurred in these boroughs in October, both resulting from falls.
The subjoined table shows the mortality for the last two months at each of these four boroughs from six principal specific febrile or zymotic diseases, and also the deaths from certain inflammatory diseases of the lungs. These causes of death have been distinguished from the others of the classes to which they belong, as being the most important special diseases which give rise to sudden increases in the death-rates of towns, and the prevalence of which is closely connected with sanitary condition and climatic influence of the season on health.
