The following remarks apply only to the four principal boroughs:—

The births in October were 361 against 315 in September, an increase of 46. The deaths in October were 116 against 126 in September, a decrease of 10.

There were 13 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: a male of 68, and two females of 71 and 65, died at Auckland; three females of 85, 76, and 73 at Wellington; two males of 68 and 65, and a female of 69, at Christchurch; and two males of 77 and 70, and two females of 67 and 65, at Dunedin.

Zymotic Diseases.—These diseases caused 17 deaths in October against 19 in September and 10 in August. The deaths from diphtheria were 4 in October against 8 in the previous month. Of these 4 deaths, 3 occurred in Auckland. There were 3 deaths in October from typhoid fever against 1 in September. Four deaths occurred from septicaemia, 2 being classed as puerperal.

Dietic Diseases.—Another death was recorded last month from alcoholism.

Constitutional Diseases.—These diseases were more fatal in October, having caused 20 deaths against 17 in the previous month. Of these, phthisis caused 13 deaths in October and 8 in September.
