ON the 2nd June, 1885, and following days, an Examination, open to all qualified persons, will be held in London. Persons desirous to be admitted as candidates must apply on forms, which may be obtained from the Secretary, Civil Service Commission, London, S.W., or from the undersigned. The forms must be returned so as to be received at the office of the Civil Service Commissioners, in London, on or before the 31st March, 1885.

Tenders for Purchase of Steam-engine and Rock-drill.
WRITTEN tenders will be received up to the 31st December, 1884, for the purchase of a new portable steam-engine and diamond rock-drill, with bits 2 inches in diameter, 2,000 feet of rods, and all necessary gearing for working the same, to bore at any angle. Lately imported from America, at the cost of £2,160.

Auckland Land District.
“THE LAND ACT, 1877.”—HOMESTEAD SYSTEM.
Conditions of Occupation.
THE area allowed to be selected by each person of the age of eighteen years or upwards shall be, of first-class lands, 50 acres, or of second-class lands, 75 acres; and for persons under eighteen years of age, of first-class lands, 20 acres or of second-class lands, 30 acres: Provided that the total quantity to be selected by any one family or number of persons occupying the one household shall not exceed 200 acres of first-class, or 300 acres of second-class, lands.

Within three months after the selection has been approved by the Board, the selector shall commence to reside on his selection, and shall continue to reside continuously thereon for five years from the date of such approval as aforesaid.

Within eighteen months after such approval the selector shall erect on his selection a permanent dwelling-house of wood or other materials, which shall be specified in regulations to be issued in reference to homestead-system selections.

In each year there shall be brought under cultivation one-fifteenth of the area of such selection if open land, and one twenty-fifth if bush land, so that at the end of the term of five years one-third of the selection of open land, or one-fifth of bush land, shall be under cultivation.

Non-performance of any of the foregoing stipulations shall render the selection void, and the right of the selector therein and to all improvements thereon shall be forfeited.

At the end of the said period of five years a grant or grants shall issue for the land selected; provided the selector shall not have forfeited his right thereto in manner aforesaid.
