THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE.
Writing Fluids, to register, under "The Trade Marks Act,
1866," the trade marks of which the following are descriptions,
viz.:-
Description of Trade Marks.
No. 1 consists of the word "Aeilyton."
No. 2 consists of a figure in the shape of a truncated
pyramid, within which is a frame enclosing lace work.
Between the inner and outer frames are spiral decorations, and
at the four corners are scroll decorations. On the inside frame
at the top is a tablet bearing the words "All the labels on this
bottle," underneath which tablet within the frame is another
tablet with scroll decorations at the ends bearing the words
"are trade mark." Under this second tablet is another tablet
bearing a facsimile of the signature "Henry Charles Stephens."
Springing from the inner frame over the spiral decoration and
outer frame is a vertical column filled in with lace-work
rounded at the top. Running round the column from the out-
side frame is a border of spiral decorations. At the two top
corners of the border are scroll decorations. On either side of
the column on the pyramid is a triangle enclosing a smaller
triangle filled in with lace-work, the space between the inner
and outer ater triangles being filled in with spiral decorations. On
the border of the column next the triangle, on the right of the
column, is a vertical tablet bearing the words "Stephens,
London;" and on the frame of the column next the triangle, on
the left of the column, is a blank tablet; between the tablets
and on the column are two concentric circles with open centre,
the space between the first and second circles being occupied by
the words and cypher "Chemist and Inventor." On the
column and over its border, just above the apex of the triangles,
is a rectangular tablet bearing the words "Consumers are
requested to assist in preventing fraud by defacing the labels
when the bottle is empty." The label and the tablets thereon
being printed in different and also in varied colours.
No. 3 consists of an oblong label with a border round the
top and ends of spiral decoration; in the two top corners
is a fleur-de-lis. On the border at the bottom of the label
in the centre is a tablet bearing the facsimile signature "Hy.
Stephens." On the border on the left-hand side of the
tablet are the words "Prepared solely by," and on the
right the words "The Original Inventor." Over the fac
simile signature, on a tablet, are the words "This label is
trade mark;" within the border is lace-work. At the top
of the label, partly on the border and partly on the lace-work,
is a device consisting of an oval and two circles, the oval partly
overlapping the circles. The oval has a double-lined border,
within which is a bordering of net-work, enclosed within which
is the representation of a crown; the circles have a double line
running round them enclosing engine-turning decoration, and
in the centre is a star. On either side of this device is a tablet,
the respective upper portions of which are filled in with lace-
work, and the lower portion of that on the left bears the ad-
dress "171, Aldersgate St.," and that on the right the word
"London." Underneath the device and tablet is another
tablet bearing the name "Stephens," below which tablet is
another tablet with rounded ends, under which is another
tablet, and below is another tablet. On either side of this
last-mentioned tablet are trefoils. The spaces on the above-
mentioned tablets are reserved for the insertion of words
descriptive of the kinds and peculiar qualities of the inks to
which the label is applied.
No. 4 consists of an oblong tablet with bordering of spiral
decorations, at the corners of which is a circle composed of
engine-turning. At the bottom of the label is an inner border
composed of lace-work, on the extreme right and left of which
are tablets-that on the left bearing the name "H. Stephens,"
and that on the right the word "London." On the inner
border at the centre is another tablet, partly overlapping the
spiral decorations, bearing the facsimile signature, Hy.
Stephens." Over this last-mentioned tablet is another tablet
bearing the words "trade mark." The label within the
bordering is filled in with lace-work. At the top of the label is
a scroll bearing the word "Stephens," under which is a tablet
with rounded ends, under which is another tablet with rounded
ends and bordering of spiral decoration, under which tablet is
another tablet. The spaces on the above-mentioned tablets are
reserved for the insertion of words descriptive of the kinds and
peculiar qualities of ink to which the label is applied. The
label and the tablets thereon being printed in different and also
in varied colours.
No 5 consists of an oblong label with a border of spiral
decoration, and scroll ornaments in each corner. Within the
border is lace-work. Immediately at the top of the label,
partly on the bordering and partly on the lace-work, is a curved
ribband bearing the proprietor's name, under which is a device
consisting of an oval, with bordering of spiral decoration,
enclosing on a plain-lined background a representation
royal arms of England, and on either side of the oval two
circles (overlapping each other) filled in with engine-turning.
On either side of this device is a ribband-that on the left
bearing the words "Also proprietor of Stephens," and that on

the right the words "Writing fluids and labels." Under the
device is a tablet, beneath which is another tablet bearing the
words "This label is issued by," under which is another tablet,
with rounded ends, bearing a facsimile of the proprietor's
signature. At each end of this last-mentioned tablet, and
partly covered by the same, are two concentric circles, part of
the space between the first and second circles on the left being
occupied by the words "Inventor and," and part of the space of
that on the right by the word "Manufacturer." The remaining
portion of the space between the circles at both ends of the
tablet being occupied by lace-work, the inner circles being
occupied by engine-turning. Under the last-described tablet
is another tablet springing on either side from two circles
superposed, the circles being filled in with engine-turning.
another tablet bearing the word and address "Chemist, 171,
Aldersgate St., London." At each end of the tablet, partly
under the same and partly on the border at the bottom of the
label, are two circles superposed, all of which are filled in with
engine-turning. The plain tablets and ribband above mentioned
are reserved for the insertion of words descriptive of the
particular kind of ink to which the mark is applied. The label
and the tablets thereon being printed in different and also in
varied colours.
No. 6 is an oblong label, with one-lined border, divided into
five parts. In the centre, extending from the inside of the
portion on the left to the inside of the portion on the right, is
an oblong band with two-lined border. The space on the band
is reserved for the insertion of words descriptive of the kinds of
ink to which the label is applied. The borders at the end of
the band on the left and right form a line which extends to the
centre of the portions of the main oblong on the left and right.
Within the portion on the left, on a background at the top, is
the outline of the map of Europe, on which is the word
"Europe," under which is the outline of the map of Asia,
upon which is the word "Asia." Within the second portion,
on a background of wavy lines at the top, is a portion of the
facsimile signature Henry Charles Stephens, the portion being
"Henry Cha" at the bottom; below the band is the address,
"171, Aldersgate Street, London." Within the centre portion,
on a background of wavy lines at the top, is the representation
of a scroll; at the bottom below the band is the representation
of a pile of papers, the five first being curled up, the sixth sheet
lying flat. Within the fourth part at the top, on a background
of wavy lines, is the remaining portion of the facsimile signa-
ture, being "es Stephens." At the bottom below the band, also
on a background of wavy lines, is the address "23, Rue Richer
23 Paris." Within the portion on the right, on a background,
is the outline of the maps of America and Africa, each portion
bearing its respective name. The label being printed in different
and varied colours.
Nature of the Articles to which it is intended such Trade
Marks shall apply.
