SIR, I am desired by the Most Hon. the Governor-
General of India in Council to forward for general
information the accompanying notice, dated the 15th
February, 1881, regarding the purchase of about
900 remounts required for the Bengal army during
the year 1881-82, and to request that it may be
published in the leading journals, and circulated as
extensively as possible.

MILITARY DEPARTMENT.
Notification.
WITH reference to the advertisement of the 3rd
March, 1880, it is hereby notified that the Govern-
ment of India are prepared to purchase about 900
horses suitable for army purposes during the year
1881-82, classed as follows:---
Class I. Walers, 771.—Medium cavalry and hus-
sars, 246; field artillery, 253; horse artillery, 272.
Class II. Country-breds, 69.—As many as pos-
sible full-grown horses; the remainder young stock
between 2$rac{1}{2}$ and 3$rac{1}{2}$ years old.
Class III. Arabs and Persians, 60.—Medium
cavalry and hussars, 40; field artillery, 20.
Total, 900.
The purchases will be made by Remount Agents at
the following stations: Calcutta, Bombay, Allahabad,
Cawnpore, Lucknow, Agra, Morar, Meerut, Bareilly,
Umballa, Lahore, Mooltan, Sialkot, Rawal Pindi, and
Peshawar.
Except under special circumstances, purchases will
be made in Calcutta only between the 15th September
and the 28th February.
Horses and mares of all breeds will be received,
but they must be within the prescribed age, four to
seven years, except as regards country-breds. It is
to be distinctly understood that, in regard to Classes
I. and III., remounts three years old and mares in
foal will not be purchased.
After the expiration of three years from the 21st
June, 1879, greys will not be purchased for horse or
field artillery.
The average price for a remount has been fixed at
550 rupees. Every horse presented for purchase will
be valued separately, and higher or lower prices may
be given, provided that the average of the purchases
does not exceed that limit.

DISCONTINUANCE OF PILOT SERVICE AT RANGI-
TIKEI, COOK STRAIT.

NOTICE is hereby given that, on and after the
first day of May next, the Pilot Service at
present established at the entrance to the Rangitikei
River will be discontinued, and the bar and danger
signals will no longer be shown from the signal
station.

EASTERN ARCHIPELAGO.—JAVA—APPROACH TO
SUNDA STRAIT.
Re-exhibition of Flashing Light on First Point.
With reference to this department Notice to
Mariners, No. 13, of 9th October, 1880, on the re-
ported destruction of the lighthouse on First Point
(Tangjong Koelong), Java, the Netherlands Govern-
ment has notified in the Berigt aan Zeevarenden
(published at The Hague on the 15th ultimo) that,
according to a telegram received from the Governor-
General of Netherlands India, dated 13th January,
1881, the lighthouse on First Point (Tanjong
Koelong) has been repaired, and that the light is
again exhibited, and should be visible, in clear
weather, from a distance of twenty-three miles.

FIXED WHITE LIGHT ON CAPE EGMONT, WEST
COAST, NORTH ISLAND, N.Z.
Preliminary Notice.
Marine Department,
Wellington, 6th April, 1881.
NOTICE is hereby given that a lighthouse is being
erected on Cape Egmont. It is anticipated
that the light will be ready for exhibition during the
month of August next. The following is a descrip-
tion of the light that will be exhibited:—
Cape Egmont Lighthouse is situated on a knoll,
about 240 yards from high-water mark, on the cape
of that name, on the west coast of the North Island
of New Zealand. The light will be a fixed white
light of the second order dioptric, visible all round
seaward as far as the land will allow.
It will be elevated about 97 feet above high-water
mark, and will be visible about fifteen and a half
nautical miles in clear weather, allowing 15 feet for
the height of the observer's eye.
Due notice will be given of the exact date when
this light will be first exhibited.
