THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE.
SUGAR-REFINING.
A bonus of five hundred pounds (£500) will be
given for three years in succession for the refining
each year, by machinery established in New Zealand,
of not less than one hundred tons of cane sugar.
The establishment by which such refining is effected
must be what is ordinarily known as a sugar-refinery.
The firm refining the first one hundred tons of sugar,
and receiving the bonus, shall be also entitled to the
bonus of the two following years upon fulfilling the
conditions above named.
GUNPOWDER.
The Government are prepared to receive pro-
posals from any person willing to establish a factory
for the manufacture of blasting and sporting powder.
The proposer to state what amount of bonus he would
require to induce him to undertake the manufacture.
The place where the factory is to be erected to be
subject to the approval of the Government, the
plans and specifications of the building to be also
approved by Government.
All the internal fittings and the arrangements for
carrying on the manufacture of the gunpowder to
be subject to the inspection of an officer appointed
by the Government.
BUTTER OR CHEESE.
A bonus of five hundred pounds (£500) will be
given for the first 25 tons of butter or the first 50
tons of cheese (produced in a factory worked on the
American principle, and to which factory any farmer,
subject to certain conditions, may send his milk),
which shall be exported from New Zealand, and sold
at such prices in a foreign market as shall show that
the articles are of fair quality.
MEAT.
A bonus of five hundred pounds (£500) will be
given on the first 100 tons of fresh meat exported
from New Zealand in vessels fitted with refrigerating
machinery. Such meat must have been collected in
a refrigerating chamber in this colony, and must
have been landed in Europe in sound marketable
condition.
CONDITIONS.
NOTICE of intention to claim any of the above
bonuses must be given in writing to the Colonial
Secretary not later than the 31st December, 1881.
The claim must be made before the 30th June, 1882.
The other conditions as to quantity, quality, and
value to be fulfilled to the satisfaction of an officer
appointed for the purpose by the Government.

The whole sum voted having been set apart for
prizes, no claims for marking, &c., can be entertained.
Each district must arrange for markers at its own
expense. -
A Committee, consisting of the Officer Com-
manding and not less than two senior Volunteer
officers in each district, will divide the amounts set
apart for their respective districts into such prizes as
they may determine, and to be competed for at such
ranges, &c., as they may appoint. The Commissioner
of Armed Constabulary will issue rules for the prizes
apportioned to that force. -
The firing for the prizes must be in accordance
with the general rules published. -
The competitions to take place at such times as
may be directed by the Officer Commanding the
district, and they are to be concluded before the
31st January, 1882. -
Returns showing the conditions under which
the competitions took place, the names of the prize-
winners, and the several amounts of the prizes,
together with the full scores of all competitors, are
to be sent to the Under-Secretary for Defence not
later than the 28th February, 1882.
Loma Loma, Fiji, closed as a Port of Entry.

PROCLAMATION
By His Excellency George William Des Vœux, Com-
panion of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint
Michael and Saint George, Governor and Com-
mander-in-Chief in and over the Colony of Fiji,
and Vice-Admiral of the same, &c.

WHEREAS by section six of ordinance number
fourteen, of one thousand eight hundred and eighty-
one, entitled "An Ordinance to regulate the Col-
lection and Management of the Revenue of Customs,"
it is, amongst other things, enacted that the Governor
may, by Proclamation, direct that any port of entry
shall, after a date to be specified in such Proclama-
tion, cease to be a port of entry under the above-
recited ordinance:

Government prizes, 1881, are published for
general information.
WM. ROLLESTON.
The sum of £800 having been voted by the General
Assembly for prizes, the amount has been divided
pro ratá amongst the Volunteer Corps, according to
the nominal strength on the 31st August, 1881,
