THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE.
The focal plane of the light will be 25 feet above
high-water level, and may be observed in ordinary
weather at a distance of nine miles from a ship's
deck.
The light tower will be painted white.

ENTRANCE TO PORT ADELAIDE.
In consequence of the looking-glass beacon marking
the entrance to Port Adelaide (on the north bank)
having been run into and destroyed, it is hereby
notified that until further notice the position will be
marked by a cheese-shaped buoy painted black, and
surmounted by conical framework and ball.

Civil Service Literary Prize.
Office of the Civil Service Examination Board,
Wellington, 20th March, 1880.
AN offer having been made to the Civil Service
Examination Board of a sum of Β£5 per annum,
for five years, to provide for prizes for the best essays
on the principles and practice of Parliamentary
Government, cognate subjects, the Board an-
nounce that the subject for the present year shall be
THE DEVELOPMENT OF CONSTITUTIONAL LIBERTY
IN ENGLAND.
Prize to be competed for under the following con-
ditions:-
- Competition to be open to all persons under the
age of 25 years at this date who have passed either
the Junior or Senior Civil Service Examination, and
who are in the Civil Service at the time of competition.

- The prize to be in books or money, at the option
of the prize-taker. - Essays to be legibly written, and on one side of
the paper only. - Essays to be delivered to the Secretary of the
Civil Service Examination Board, Wellington, by the
31st December, 1880. - No competitor to allow his name to appear on
his essay, but to adopt a motto or cypher, which is
also to be written on a sealed envelope containing
the author's name, and attached to the essay. - The prize will not be awarded unless there is an
essay which, in the judgment of the examiners, is
of sufficient merit to entitle the author to receive it. - Competitors are advised to keep copies of their
essays, as those sent to the Board will not be re-
turned.

THE Government having secured suitable accom-
modation at Sumner, Canterbury, for the pro-
posed Institution for the Education and Training of
Deaf-mutes, Mr. and Mrs. Van Asch are now pre-
pared to receive pupil-boarders at the Institution.
Full information may be obtained on application to
the undersigned, or to the Secretaries of the several
Education Boards.

THE under-mentioned sections, not having been
purchased at the late auction, will, by direction
of the Land Board, be open to purchase on applica-
tion at the Land Office on and after Monday, the
14th day of June, 1880, viz.: 4 sections, Horokiwi
Valley, 17 sections, Taratahi Plain, 4 sections, Wai-
poua, 25 sections, Rangitumau, 43 sections, Pahaua,
16 sections, Whareama, and 6 sections, Awhea
Blocks, and 8 sections, Waitotara District, at the
upset price of 10s. per acre; one-fourth to be paid
on application, and the balance in one month. Maps
can be seen and full particulars obtained at this
office.

Gold-Mining Lease to be granted.
PUBLIC NOTIFICATION.
IN conformity with the thirty-seventh section of
"The Mines Act, 1877," and with the regulations
made under that Act for the granting of leases for
gold-mining purposes, it is hereby notified that it is
intended to grant a lease of Crown lands for gold-
mining purposes to the applicants specified in the
annexed Schedule, unless there shall be valid objec-
tions against such lease.
Objections to the granting of such lease, stating
the grounds of objection, must be made in writing,
and lodged with the Warden at Ophir on or before
the 29th day of June, 1880,
