Manawatu Highway District constituted.

A PROCLAMATION.

WHEREAS by an Ordinance of the Province of
Wellington intituled "The Highways Act,
1874," it is enacted that it shall be lawful for the
Superintendent from time to time, by Proclamation
in the Government Gazette, to divide any district or
districts into two or more new districts, and the
same in like manner, from time to time, to subdivide,
alter, or reunite; and that no such Proclamation shall
be issued, or shall have any force or effect, unless the
Superintendent shall first have received a petition
praying for the issue of such Proclamation, signed by
at least two-thirds of the ratepayers, reckoned accord-
ing to their votes, within the boundaries of the district
which such petition prays may be established, and
the remaining portion of the original district shall be
immediately thereafter proclaimed a new district by
the Superintendent, and shall be and be deemed to
be a proclaimed district, and shall be dealt with in
the same manner as a proclaimed district under the
provisions of the now recited Act: And whereas the
powers, duties, and functions vested in the Superin-
tendent by the said Ordinance are, by "The Aboli-
tion of Provinces Act, 1875," now vested in the
Governor: And whereas, by a Proclamation of even
date herewith, but issued immediately before this
Proclamation, after reciting that a petition had been
received by the Governor praying him to issue a
Proclamation establishing the portion of the Mana-
watu Highway District defined in the Schedule to
the said Proclamation into a new district, and that
such petition was signed by two-thirds of the rate-
payers, as provided by the said "Highways Act,
1874," the Governor did separate the portion of
the said district, in the said Proclamation de-
scribed, from the said district, and did constitute
the separated portion into a new highway dis-
trict: And whereas the district comprised within the
boundaries set forth in the First Schedule hereto is
the remaining portion of the said Manawatu High-
way District, and it is necessary, by the provisions of
the said "Highways Act, 1874," that such remaining
portion should be constituted into a new highway
district: And whereas all things have happened and
been performed entitling the Governor to issue this
Proclamation :

Now, therefore, I, George Augustus Constantine,
Marquis of Normanby, the Governor of the Colony of
New Zealand, in exercise and pursuance of the powers
and authorities vested in me by the said recited Ordi-
nance and Act, do hereby proclaim and declare that,
from and after the tenth day of September next,
the district the boundaries whereof are set forth in
the Schedule hereto shall be and the same is hereby
constituted a highway district, by the name of the
Manawatu Highway District; and such highway dis-
trict shall have the boundaries set forth in the said
Schedule: And, in further exercise of the powers
and authorities aforesaid, I do proclaim and declare
that the said Manawatu Highway District shall be
divided into the seven wards the names and boun-
daries whereof are set forth in the Second Schedule
hereto.

FIRST SCHEDULE.

ALL that parcel of land in the Provincial District of
Wellington, bounded towards the North by a line
from the source of the Rangitikei River due east
(magnetic) to the summit of the Ruahine Range;
towards the East by the summit of the Ruahine
Range to the Manawatu Gorge, thence by the
summit of the Tararua Range to the Otaki Highway
District, described in a Proclamation of even date
herewith; towards the South by the said district to
the mouth of the Manawatu River; towards the West
by the sea to the mouth of the Rangitikei River;
and towards the North-west by that river to its
source, the point of commencement: save and
excepting the Manchester Highway District, as
described in the Wellington Provincial Gazette of
June 24th, 1876.

SECOND SCHEDULE.

Names of Wards. Boundaries of Wards.
Ward No. 1 Bounded towards the North by the Manchester Highway District; towards the East by the Oroua River; towards the South by the Town- ship of Carnarvon; and towards the West by the Rangitikei River.
Ward No. 2 Bounded towards the North by Ward No. 1; towards the East by the Oroua River; towards. the South by the railway line from Foxton to Wanganui, by a railway reserve, by Sections Nos. 323, 322, and 321, and by the production of the northern boundary of the said Section No. 321 to the sea-coast; and towards the West by the sea- coast and the Rangitikei River.
Ward No. 3 Bounded towards the North by Ward No. 2; towards the East by the Oroua and Manawatu Rivers; towards the South by the Manawatu River; and towards the West by the sea-coast.
Ward No. 4 Bounded towards the North by the Main Road line from Palmerston to Rangitikei, and by the Borough of Palmerston; towards the South- east by the Manawatu River; and towards the West by the Oroua River.
Ward No. 5 Bounded towards the North-west by the Manawatu River and the Manchester Highway District; towards the East by the summit of the Tararua Range; and towards the South by the southern boundary line of the Township of Fitzherbert.
Ward No. 6 Bounded towards the North by the Man- chester Highway District; towards the East by the Manawatu River; towards the South by the Borough of Palmerston and by Ward No. 4; and towards the West by the Oroua River.
Ward No. 7 Bounded towards the North by a line bearing east (magnetic) from the source of the Rangitikei River to the summit of the Ruahine Range; towards the East by the summit of the said range to the gorge of the Manawatu River; towards the South by the said river and by the Manchester Highway District; and towards the North-west by the Rangitikei River.

Given under the hand of His Excellency the
Most Honorable George Augustus Con-
stantine, Marquis of Normanby, Earl of
Mulgrave, Viscount Normanby, and Baron
Mulgrave of Mulgrave, all in the County
of York, in the Peerage of the United
β€’ Kingdom; and Baron Mulgrave of New
Ross, in the County of Wexford, in the
Peerage of Ireland; a Member of Her
Majesty's Most Honorable Privy Coun-
cil; Knight Grand Cross of the Most
Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and
Saint George; Governor and Commander-
in-Chief in and over Her Majesty's Colony
of New Zealand and its Dependencies,
and Vice-Admiral of the same; and issued
under the Seal of the said Colony, at the
Government House, at Wellington, this
thirty-first day of August, in the year of
our Lord one thousand eight hundred
and seventy-eight.
