A PROCLAMATION.
WHEREAS by section seven of an Ordinance of
the Province of Wellington intituled "The
Highways Act, 1874," it is enacted that the Super-
intendent may from time to time, by Proclamation
in the Government Gazette, divide any district or
districts into two or more new districts, and the same
in like manner from time to time to subdivide, alter,
or reunite: And whereas the powers, duties, and
functions vested in the Superintendent by the said
Ordinance are, by "The Abolition of Provinces Act,
1875," now vested in the Governor: And whereas
the Governor has received a petition praying for the
issue of a Proclamation constituting the portion of
the Manawatu Highway District specified in the
First Schedule hereto into a separate district: And
whereas such petition is signed by two-thirds and
more of the ratepayers, reckoned according to their
votes, within the boundaries of the district which
such petition prays to be established, and all things
have happened and been performed to entitle the
Governor to issue this Proclamation:
Now, therefore, I, George Augustus Constantine
Marquis of Normanby, Governor of the Colony
of New Zealand, in exercise and pursuance of the
powers and authorities vested in me by the said recited
Ordinance and Act, do hereby proclaim and declare
that, from and after the tenth day of September, one
thousand eight hundred and seventy-eight, the portion
of the Manawatu Highway District defined in the
Schedule hereto shall be and the same is hereby sepa-
rated from the said district, and constituted into a new
highway district, by the name of the "Otaki Highway
District," and such highway district shall have the
boundaries set forth in the said First Schedule.
And, in further exercise of the powers and authorities
aforesaid, I do hereby divide the said Otaki Highway
District into the seven wards the names and boun-
daries whereof are set forth in the Second Schedule
hereto.
FIRST SCHEDULE.
ALL that parcel of land in the Provincial District of
Wellington, bounded towards the North by the
Manawatu River to Fitzherbert Township; thence
by Fitzherbert Township aforesaid to the summit of
the Tararua Range; towards the East by the summit
of the Tararua Range to a point bearing east (mag-
netic) from the source of the Waikanae River
Ward No. 1 (Opiki)
Bounded towards the North by the Town-
ship of Fitzherbert and by the Manawatu
River; towards the East by the summit of
the Tararua Range; towards the South by
the northern boundary of the Manawatu-
Kukutanaki Block No. 2D; and towards
the West by the Manawatu River.
Ward No. 2 (Horo-
whenua)
Bounded towards the North by the Opiki
Ward and by the Manawatu River; to-
wards the East by the summit of the
Tararua Range; towards the South by the
southern boundary line of the Horowhenua
Block; and towards the West by the sea-
coast.
Ward No. 3 (Ohau)
Bounded towards the North by the Horo-
whenua Ward; towards the East by the
summit of the Tararua Range; towards
the South by the Waikawa River and by
the northern boundary line of the Mana-
watu-Kukutanaki Block No. 4D; and to-
wards the West by the sea-coast.
Ward No. 4 (Wai-
tohu)
Bounded towards the North by the Ohau
Ward; towards the East by the summit of
the Tararua Range; towards the South by
the Waitohu Stream and the northern
boundary line of the Pukehou Block No. 5A;
and towards the West by the sea-coast.
Ward No.5 (Otaki)
Bounded towards the North by the Wai-
tohu Ward; towards the East by the
summit of the Tararua Range; towards
the South by the Otaki River and by the
southern boundary line of the Waihoanga
Block No. 4; and towards the West by
the sea-coast.
Ward No. 6 (Nga-
karoro)
Bounded towards the North by the Otaki
Ward; towards the East by the summit
of the Tararua Range; towards the South
by the northern boundaries of the Nga-
karoro Blocks No. 2F and 2E; and towards
the West by the sea-coast.
Ward No. 7 (Wai-
kanae)
Bounded towards the North by the Nga-
karoro Ward; towards the East by the
summit of the Tararua Range; towards
the South by the northern boundary of the
Wellington Highway District; and to-
wards the West by the sea-coast.
Given under the hand of His Excellency the
Most Honorable George Augustus Con-
stantine, Marquis of Normanby, Earl of
Mulgrave, Viscount Normanby, and Baron
Mulgrave of Mulgrave, all in the County
of York, in the Peerage of the United
Kingdom; and Baron Mulgrave of New
