NOTES FOR NOVEMBER, 1877.

Mongonui.—Very fine weather; small rainfall, the maximum recorded on 4th, 80 in.; prevailing N.W. and W. winds, strong on 4th,
5th, 6th, and 7th.

Auckland.—Generally fine; rather showery at commencement of month; winds moderate and prevailing from S. and S.W., strong on
21st; often hot during mornings with cool nights; maximum rain recorded on 21st, 430 in.

Taranaki.—Unsettled showery weather early part, with thunder on 1st and 7th; strong N.W. winds on 3rd, 4th, and 6th; finer during
middle and end of month; prevailing N. W. and S.W. winds; maximum rain recorded on 11th, 63 in.; fog on 10th.

Napier.—Fine dry weather generally with moderate winds prevailing from N.E.; loud thunder on 7th with showers; maximum rain
recorded on 21st, 61 in.

Wellington.—Violent gale on 2nd, N.W., rain in night; also on 3rd strong gale during day and night, N.W., at midnight loud peal of
thunder and vivid lightning, the latter continuing all night, and rain, 1.10 in. recorded on 4th, maximum for month; strong wind on
night of 4th from N.W.; showery up to 7th, then fine generally to end of month, though heavy rain during afternoon and night of
19th; 700 in. recorded on 20th; very stormy on 16th, 17th, and 18th; also on 22nd from N.W.; wind prevailed from N.W. and
generally strong; small total rainfall.

Wanganui.—

Nelson.--Fine weather; strong W. winds from 2nd to 7th; maximum rain recorded on 4th, 86 in.; thunder on 2nd and 3rd; prevailing
N.W. and S.W. winds.

Cape Campbell.—Very dry weather with gales of wind from W. and N.W. almost daily; maximum rain recorded on 4th, 38 in.

Christchurch.—Fine on 1st, but at noon on 2nd strong N. W. wind set in and continued until 6th, when a violent hail, thunder, and lightning
storm set in; fine again on 7th, and continued so throughout remainder of month; at times very warm, dry weather experienced;
the maximum rainfall recorded on 4th, 75 in.; prevailing winds from N.W. and S.W., and strong from 2nd to 6th.

Bealey.—Very showery unpleasant weather throughout with prevailing N. and N.W. winds, often reaching gales; thunder on 3rd and
4th; snow on 6th; hail on 4th and 5th; maximum rain recorded on 4th, 4:50 in.

Hokitika.—Very wet month; some fine weather towards end of month; maximum rain on 19th, 2.23 in.; several heavy falls; gale on
2nd and 3rd from N.E., and 4th, 5th, and 10th, from S.W.; thunder on 3rd, 4th, and 5th; hail from 2nd to 6th; hailstones of very
large size on 4th; fog on 28th, 29th, and 30th; prevailing S.W. wind.

Dunedin.—Exceedingly fine and very dry month; prevailing W. winds and moderate; maximum rain recorded on 10th, 48 in.

Queenstown.—Heavy rainfall, especially early part; the maximum recorded on 18th, 1.61 in. falling during night of 17th; rivers flooded
and lake rose above ordinary level; thunderstorms on 2nd. 9th, 18th, and 27th; prevailing N.W. winds and moderate.

Southland.—Strong cold winds almost daily, chiefly from W. and S.W.; small rainfall; the maximum recorded on 8th, 28 in.; hail on 7th.

GENERAL REMARKS.

During early part of month strong westerly gale experienced at almost all stations, accompanied at most places with heavy rain, hail,
and thunder, causing floods; the latter part of month generally fine and pleasant; except at one or two localities the rain was under the
average. Earthquakes felt at Wellington on 6th, at 9.10 a.m., slight, and on 7th at 8.21 p.m, slight; at Kaiapoi and Rangiora, on 21st.
